Kakko isn't getting top 6 minutes because he's only shown chemistry with Chytil and PDG. He has almost no chemistry with Panarin and Strome. He hasn't really played with Zib that much.

I believe a lot of that has to do with playing style. I think for Kakko to succeed in the NHL it's going to be digging pucks out of corners, creating offense off of physical dominance downlow. Crashing the net. Maybe one day he can play netfront on PP with that frame. When he plays with Panarin and Strome his game tends to revert. Panarin is very east west. Strome isn't a great grinder along the boards. And what Kakko needs to round his game into form is playing with guys who are chip and chase and recover, cycle. He shouldn't be on lines that go east west right now.

Laf would also benefit from playing on lines that played with speed and chipped and chased.

As for Buchnevich's future with the team. I get all the salary cap issues. But to me his future is dependent on how the fast the kids develop. As you can see, the depth on this team is somewhat thin. If the kids are coming along slowly, A) you won't have to pay them as quickly as you think. So, you may be able to afford Buch longer. B) we will need players like Buch to act as a security blanket until we're ready to put the burden of of the offense on the next generation. I don't think signing Buch to a 2 year deal after this year is impossible.

Can we stop making excuses for Zibby's poor start? There haven't been any reports that his bout with the virus was anything more than about 95% of cases.
He will come around and someone will claim that he is finally over the Rona.

I really don't see all that much chemistry with Strome and Panarin. Panarin is ultra skilled and opens up plays for his linemates. I just don't see Strome being anything more than a passenger. Kakko, on the other hand, is starting to show some signs that he can drive play.

Yeah, just like last year his injury wasn't called a "concussion". Want to go back at look at Mika's reaction when the question was asked directly?

Not arguing that he will come around but being held out of the camp, the way his face looked and the way he looked on the ice - put these things together and come with a reasonable explanation that covers all three.

It’s not necessary for him to have a serious coronavirus issue for it to affect his play though. I had coronavirus last spring and my only symptom was a foggy feeling that lasted for 2-3 months. It was difficult to shake it even though I had a mostly asymptomatic case. I just couldn’t think straight.

Regardless, Zib is a professional who will figure out how to come out of his offensive rut. There are no excuses in pro sports. If you’re out there, you find a way.

I thought he had a good game last night on the defensive side of things though.

He also looked decent on the power play. We just need to be patient with him.

Everyone reacts very differently to the virus. But he’s too good of a player for this to last much longer.

By the way, I thought Kreider bass a solid game last night. It’s strange that it takes him a month or so each season to wake up though. Not sure why he has such poor starts.

Bottom line is that Zib is not helping the team and if he is "feeling the effects of covid" or just out of shape, take a seat until you are ready to play.
Anything else is an excuse.

The injury in game 3 is the issue imo

Agreed. The kind of plays Kakko creates and the kinds that Panarin generates seem to be of opposite variety. It doesn't mean they couldn't mesh, but it's less likely than say Panarin and Laf.

On separate note, I want to talk a little bit about ice time. I think we all get a little too caught up in how minutes some kids get. If you break it down, you'll see that averaging 9-12min a game is exactly what we should normally expect young inexperienced forwards to get.

There are roughly 90 total shifts in a game. 30 per period. In an average game roughly 25% of it is special teams play -- roughly 23 shifts.

So, if you're not on PP or PK, at best you're looking at 1/4 of 67 shifts in a game. Which works out to 17 shifts. Avg shift length is 45 seconds or 3/4 of one minute. 17 x 3/4 = roughly 12 minutes 15 seconds.

12 min and 15 seconds IF the coach doesn't shorten the bench ever or shuffle lines. Given our PP and PK units, we always have shuffling in the minutes following special teams plays, esp PK.

My point is, when these young kids only get like 10 min of icetime, we're only talking about them missing out on 1-3 shifts in a game. The key to getting more ice time in this league is either showing your skilled enough for PP or reliable enough to play when protecting a lead or on PK. When more offensive guys like Kakko and Laf seem like they're getting less icetime than other forwards its because they haven't yet shown they can be consistently relied upon in important defensive situations. Or they are not on PP or they are on PP2 and only getting 15 seconds of PP time.

Last thing I'll say on this is when Kakko, Chytil and PDG were together they were given late game shifts for a few games because they had shown to be the most effective line. And with that their minutes were well above 12 minute sea level.

To me, that's really the best indicator of a young forward's development (at least on this team). Over 12 minutes and they are likely being trusted with important minutes.

The chemistry was left in 2019.

Strome had a good game though, his best so far this season. Hopefully they can get going at even-strength.

Trying to read crosby's lips at that clip i think he said "What'd you think of that?"

I have a completely different view of that whole scenario, I didn't think he was chit chatting with Fox at all and actually looking at someone beyond Fox over his shoulder kind of thing (maybe Lindgren) - I took it as a Crosby sarcastic sneer about a fight that he feels shouldn't have happened/or someone who was part of the initial scrum wasn't the one fighting.

I'm probably in the minority but that's ok :)

Stop making sense!

Yes, Kakko needs cycling and grinding linemates. I posted last night: how big of a benefit would Kakko have if he had Hayes still around for a center? And to a lesser degree Laf.

as long he continues to score big goals in the playoffs, take all the slow starts you need. but in a short season please go on a goal or point scoring streak.

The uneven play is just part of who he is. If he were more consistent, then he would be an absolute star and not "just" a top line forward.

every hockey fan should be required to watch letterkenny. the show is gold. Lots of hockey humor, the creator played lots of juniors. Another main cast member (Reilly) is in the new Mighty Ducks show

Former NHL'er Jim Playfair's son is the guy you're talking about, Dylan.

So now we only have 2 games in 7 days in an already condensed season? Friggin Devils.
