Kakko isn't getting top 6 minutes because he's only shown chemistry with Chytil and PDG. He has almost no chemistry with Panarin and Strome. He hasn't really played with Zib that much.
I believe a lot of that has to do with playing style. I think for Kakko to succeed in the NHL it's going to be digging pucks out of corners, creating offense off of physical dominance downlow. Crashing the net. Maybe one day he can play netfront on PP with that frame. When he plays with Panarin and Strome his game tends to revert. Panarin is very east west. Strome isn't a great grinder along the boards. And what Kakko needs to round his game into form is playing with guys who are chip and chase and recover, cycle. He shouldn't be on lines that go east west right now.
Laf would also benefit from playing on lines that played with speed and chipped and chased.
As for Buchnevich's future with the team. I get all the salary cap issues. But to me his future is dependent on how the fast the kids develop. As you can see, the depth on this team is somewhat thin. If the kids are coming along slowly, A) you won't have to pay them as quickly as you think. So, you may be able to afford Buch longer. B) we will need players like Buch to act as a security blanket until we're ready to put the burden of of the offense on the next generation. I don't think signing Buch to a 2 year deal after this year is impossible.
