If Maatta can net a 3rd rounder, what can Grz fetch? Maatta has been a No. 6-7 defenseman for Detroit so far this season. Grz has been playing top-four minutes (albeit badly) all season. Can we get a third for Grz? I'd settle for a fourth. Of course, he is a BU alum, so a contract extension is probably already being drawn up. But one can dream.

Pettersson is a different animal altogether. He should be worth a lot more than what we think. But teams probably view us as a sinking ship (correctly), so they probably will take their time making their best offers for him.

I am still torn on moving Pettersson. I mean, if Sullivan stays then whatever. But a player like him could be great for a post-Sullivan era. Then again, the same could be said of others.

The trade season has opened. Let's get to work Mike the Czar Sullivan.

You do it by taking bad money back in the deal.
So you want to trade bad money for bad money, just to get more underwhelming draft capital?

Can we come up with a different plan already? This one is clearly shitty. Unless you are enjoying Kevin Hayes, Cody Glass et al.

I think Pettersson should bring back at least a 1st round pick. When you look at the pending UFAs on defense it is a very thin rental market. Pettersson is arguably the best defenseman available.

Agreed. Cap doesn't matter for this team anymore. Time to sell off anything with even a bit of value and take on bad deals in exchange for picks and prospects. Hopefully they fall bass ackwards into some stud, building block type guy who comes in and can learn from Sid and Geno while they're still around.

MP doesn’t get a 1st, would be my bet. Hope I’m wrong.

No real incentive for teams to pay up. They know the Pens have their back against wall. Unless there is a bidding war which I doubt for a LD.

I think last year's Petts gets you a 1st. This year's Petts, eh. Maybe some team's desperate. It probably won't be better than like a 25th overall though.

I’m fine if MP brings back a 2nd. A first would be nice but teams just aren’t paying that for rentals anymore.

The tricky thing is going to be "building trade value" for any of these players when the team is a steaming pile of yak dung. Usually a team at least says "f*** it go play" once they realize they suck (look at EK in his last SJ year). But for some reason the Penguins are still trying to grind away wins even though they can't and are cutting themselves off at the knees regarding their offense in order to achieve this. So basically you can't build value at any position because none of them work on this team.

Top three coach in the league, though.

Still betting on a 2nd and a B prospect for Pettersson as a rental. Very similar to what Tanev brought back last year.
I would be happy with something like a 2nd and Defenseman Elias Pettersson from Vancouver who are allegedly looking for a top 4d.

Late 1st or 2nd + B prospect.

I potentially could see us do a 1st for a 3rd + Petts for example.

Could something like Fiala and Karlsson be worked out.

We retain a bunch on Karlsson. We give them a LW cheap let's say DOC or Cody Glass to fill the LW hole.

Then we take back Fiala ++

Defense is thin. Doughty probably would be fine focusing on ES and PK. More minutes for him there.

The plan is to trade mid players for bad players + picks

It could be an earlier (before the TDL) trade with Pettersson and him returning a 1st like Chiarot did. That's me being hopeful though. Realistically, he has solid 2nd+4th value but rest assured, there will month long discussions bemoaning Dubas for not getting the 1st

I think Eller might get us a 2nd as well. Dude has turned back the clock a little. He'd be a fantastic TDL depth add to bolster a bottom 6 center slot for any contender. I'm honestly eyeing Edmonton there.

Since he has admitted hes the type to pay extra to get his guy earlier, I wonder if something like 1st+for Petts retained from Vancouver would be in play. Even if we have to take somebody like Brannstrom for a contract spot.

Yeah, I would be on board with that, though does Vancouver really need defense?

Edmonton is another team that could really use Pettersson. I package of Pettersson and Eller to Edmonton at the TDL would make a lot of sense.

Eller is my sleeper candidate to get a surprisingly good return at the deadline. Centres are always in demand, he's playing well this year, a proven winner, and most importantly on a very affordable cap hit with no trade protection.

Teams like Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Vancouver are always struggling with available players having them on no trade lists.
