I had this whole thing typed out for who I'd want for Jake, Smith to Vegas blah blah..

Then it's just like, Sullivan won't be gone so why bother.

It doesn't even matter who they would get, if the player looked like a good fit for Malkin, we all know where that player is going to go, L1 and then L3.

You know, looking back on Kyle Dubas' trades as a Leafs GM, blokes in the Pens media hated on Hextall and soured on JR near the end of his tenure, but I mean, I don't know if I hold out much hope. He probably does love Sullivan and the worst thing in this scenario is he's on the same page as Sullivan, which will mean this is going to get much worse.

After all, the Pens media and some idiots still whine about Jared McCann over Jeff Carter. Hextall got Hallander and a 7th for McCann.

Kyle Dubas gave up Hallander, a 7th, and then lost Jared McCann to the Kraken. He's been chasing that Hyman high ever since and hasn't gotten close.

The Pens end times have been here since 2018.

At this point if I owned the team I would go to the core and ask them what they want. Crosby in particular.

We owe them, and him especially, that much.

Especially since the Pens do not seem likely able to retool enough to be Cup favorites again with this core.

End their careers here with a less and less likely chance at a cup? Or grant him a trade somewhere where they can take one final chance.

Again, we owe them that much.

His plan was to get McCann specifically for the ED.

I think he had it tough in Toronto. You get Matthews, Marner, Nylander in the draft and then have to sign Tavaras (more or less). That's a ton of money to have to dedicate to those guys on top of the expectations automatically being the Cup or Bust. Operating in that narrow cap space would be tough.

I wouldn't ask players what they need in terms of players at all.

This is hugely important for a coach to decide with a GM. And that has been the biggest issue. Another possible issue right now is how much Crosby adores Sullivan and this ownership has prioritized the core already so yeah, here we are...

I think it was part them wanting McCann and also being ok if they lost him but hoped they didn't.

McCann was insurance policy. The expectation was that Seattle would take Kerfoot, so Toronto got McCann - who profiles similarly at the time - to force Seattle to choose.

McCann has become a more prolific player while Kerfoot filled a specific role for the Leafs.

Not only does FSG not care, Sullivan doesn't care, the core don't care, Dubas doesn't care

They're all content coasting along

Nothing is going to happen at the TDL

It depends. It the team continues to wallow in mediocrity (gee, what are the odds?) then at most Doobie will tinker around the edges and bring in another vanilla bottom-6 type like Benstrom. Better to stockpile those than to take the unacceptable risk that Puustinen would have to stay in the lineup. Yikes!

If the team goes in the tank and pressure builds to sell.... Doobie will stand pat. Selling obviously means giving up on the season and attendance @ PPG will tank as fast as the team does. Aside from fawning over their incompetent homeboy coach, that's the one thing FSG cares about with this team.

If the team goes on a run, Doobie may feel the need to be seen as something other than inert and may make a stupid Granlund-type trade, mortgaging even more of what limited future this team has in order to play into the fiction that they are just one player away from another major Cup run. When that plan flops, well "at leest he trydd sumthing!!1!"

WTFF do you think that Dubas & FSG are going to do to make the Pens Legit SC Contenders

Yep. This. This all day long. This this this this this.
HCMS has every angle covered and ready to bamboozle. Doesn't even matter the roster... could ice the eastern all-stars and this guy would have them grinding it out and dump and chasing....
The penguins don't exist to me until that creature is gone.

Exactly. People talk about it like he gave up Nylander+7th for nothing, but a better way to look at it is he gave up Nylander+7th for Kerfoot. Nylander hasn't turned into anything yet and is going to be 26 in a few days. 7th round picks are almost worthless. Kerfoot is a solid player that the Leafs got 3 solid years out of.

I'm not really trying to rehash the expansion draft debate, but I can understand what the Pens were trying to do with that expansion draft. Carter was great for the Pens and they knew Malkin was going to be out, Kapanen had 30 points in 40 games that year, outside of a couple week hot streak McCann hadn't shown much (thanks Sully), and Tanev is a nice player but had a brutal contract. Trading McCann got them a prospect and 'forced' the Kraken to take Tanev's contract. Everything that came after that is a separate thing.

So I think it made sense for both sides, but the biggest difference between Dubas/Leafs and Hextall/Pens is it's inarguable in retrospect that it was a solid move for Dubas and absolutely brutal for Hextall.

I'm here until at least the deadline, but barring some miraculous turnaround, I'm not going to be spending nearly as much time watching and talking about this team if he's back next year. No GM change or assistant coach shakeup or roster revamping is going to fool me again either.

I think they honestly just change enough in specific places to appear to change, but how's it that they haven't changed a thing in 5 years? Just getting worse and worse, it isn't supposed to be that way...THEN, I watch again.
I don't know or care really, but give me de-genx 3.0 (2 or 3?) and just be done with it already. And of course, be rid of the creature..... (hcms)

See, I don't think I agree with that. Defense has been revamped a couple of times, including brining in the reigning Norris Trophy winner. Bottom 6 is completely unrecognizable from just a few years ago. Assistant coaches have been shuffled. This is the 3rd GM in that last 3 years.

There are only 3 things that haven't changed. The core, the head coach, and the results.

Nothing

No cap

No prospects

No draft picks

No roster

Which is why they aren't stressed out about it

The ride is over and they're just beer leaguing with buddies from here on out. Do some scores. Do some videotron spotlights. Raise some ceremonial banner.

I'm not even mad anymore. I'm through the 5 stages of grief
