Hmm, this is interesting.

The Penguins have signed defenseman Dmitri Samorukov to a one-year contract.

The contract runs through the 2023.24 season and carries an average annual value of $775,000 at the NHL level.

He was on an AHL deal with WBS. Word is he's been pretty good to start the season. Wonder if he's going to get rewarded with a call-up.

Dude is shit. Can not believe we are going to play him above Ty Smith.. but then again.. Mike Sullivan is a complete tool so no surprise.

Only this franchise would acquire a top talent like Ty Smith and then only give him 9 NHL games where he looked great and bury his ass for reasons unknown.

I’m interested in seeing what Ludvig can do I hope he brings a little physicality to a blue line that is lacking it. Ty Smith I get the impression they just don’t like he was decent from what I remember in New Jersey, still only 23 and has over 100 nhl games of experience.

Penguins have recalled forwards Jansen Harkins and Alex Nylander from Wilkes-Barre, activated defenseman John Ludvig from the Long-Term Injured list and put RW Rickard Rakell and D Chad Ruhwedel on injured-reserve.

Top talent Ty Smith?

Guess Marino has even more value than I thought.

I've watched several WBS games this year and Samorukov is not "shit" as the previous poster stated.

Neither is Ty Smith although he's surely nowhere near "top talent" either. Smith should have been in Pittsburgh from day 1. All those who were hating on Smith this past September during the preseason (even given that Smith wasn't exactly great) conveniently ignored the fact that POJ and Ruh were worse.

But Smith had to play his way ON to the team (like Shea did -- I guess), and he failed to do that, and those 2 had to play their way OFF. Which they pretty much have now.

Yeah, Smith is an interesting prospect.
But not a guy you hand a scholarship to.

Rakell going on LTIR might be a blessing in disguise. Yeah it asks questions about the team's rather thin looking depth, but those questions needed to be asked and a reset isn't such a bad thing for him.

Harkins...gross.

I hope Accari is moved up and they run Nieto-Carter-Harkins as a heavily sheltered 4th line.

It opens up an interesting conversation about us being able to take a player with a cap hit with little going back in return. But it may depend on just how long he is out. It's the end of November. The deadline is more or less 3 months away. If a guy like Nylander can't fill the gap, they may have to look to pull the trigger and then make a move later if and when he comes back.

Ty Smith is shit, skates as well as Robby Brown!

Yes, Ty Smith was a top talent when drafted and we’ve done nothing to allow him to find his game here.

His NHL minutes with the Penguins were fantastic. It’s honestly a bizarre story that we’ve let him wither away on the vine. But we are doing similar things with Puusy and Poulin. So no surprise. Slowly morphing into the Habs / Rangers when it comes to developing prospects.

Why would both Carter and Harkins be playing? Only one of them needs to play, even if Rust is out.
Fair.

Yeah, Smith's an interesting case. I liked his play in Pit last year. The problem is, when the spot was up for grabs, others were better. Can't waive POJ. Shea did well, Ludvig was a nice pickup, Rudwedel does well on the RD...it was just tough for him to crack the lineup. He's not doing too bad in WBS. There's worse things than to have him marinading in WBS. Dumoulin spent quite awhile there as well.

Gurgs takes shots at me for saying "Johnsson can press for a top-6 spot" in the off-season while simultaneously saying that Ty Smith is a "top talent"? What?

If Ty Smith is a top talent how comes NJD let him go for not a whole lot when he was 22, followed by nobody in the NHL claiming him on waivers the year after?

It's all a conspiracy orchestrated by Mike Sullivan.

Are you talking about pre-season this year or last year? Last year I agree, Smith was very good and POJ was terrible. This year, that wasn't the case at all. Smith played himself to waivers because of how bad he was, which POJ looked like he took another step to being a good NHL defenseman. Then the season started and POJ went to crap.

Taking out the evaluation of Smith for a second, Smith doesn't have a role on this team unless he has learned how to play defense. The reality is that he's a PP specialist on a team that already has Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson above him. The only way he'd crack this lineup is if he fits what role the team is looking for in its bottom pair defensemen: guys who play a safe and boring style and don't make mistakes. Smith, much like POJ, is pretty much the opposite of that. If Smith could play semi-reliable defense, I would be extremely happy to run with Ludvig-Smith as the 3rd pair. I just have no confidence he can do that.

No matter how many times people whine about Sullivan, that's how the team is constructed. Smith doesn't fit on this team's bottom pair just like Puustinen doesn't fit this team's bottom-6.

IF he takes the ice the team is doomed. :-). Like 3 other guys who should be called up before him. He sucked THAT bad in the 1st 4 gms he should never be recalled again.

I was talking about this preseason -- I know that Smith wasn't very good at all, but I watched the games that were televised/streamed and all of our bottom pair guys were highly unimpressive. Ruh was his usual self (garbage), POJ was HIS usual self (a turnstile), what Shea did to make himself stand out was not readily apparent, but he was only targeted for the press box anyway if everyone were healthy.

Maybe because Smith hasn't justified the deal for Marino (as if he's been given any chance to do so) some people like to dump on him, but nothing in the preseason showed me that he's any worse than the guys who made the team.

I actually want to see Nylander play up. RW RHS who I thought played Ok especially on his defensive positioning. What exactly does no offense LW's do like Nieto, and his ilk bring to the ice? Dubas has to see who can play a role here. With Rakell out, a RH shot comes in handy.
Jake Sid Rust
Smith Geno Acciari
DOC Lars Zahorna
Nieto Carter Nylander

People do not care about Ty Smith because his upside is miniscule.

"Hadn't justified the deal" has nothing to do with it. He's just a middling prospect.

When did ruh and rakell get injured?

When Raks gets back from IR it's going to be the second coming... FIVE points in 17 games. One of which is even a goal 👀

Also how tf did we get stuck with another 3 games in 4 days
