I don't think they have to retain to move Smith, I think they'd retain on Smith to get a better return.

Hard to project that far ahead, but it depends on how Dubas intends to use that cap space next year. We're going to have 10m-20m in cap space depending on who moves out, enough to bring in a 10m guy. Looking at the pending UFA list, that guy is Jake. Maybe they have a handshake deal to bring Jake back in the offseason, but otherwise I don't know what Dubas is planning. The only other option to get a high dollar, high performance player like that is a trade, and a trade that big for a player with term would delete those assets we just gained, and then some.

Thats a viable roster that, assuming no retention, leaves 13m in cap space. 3m to a D, 10M to a winger makes this look a lot better. Even if you retain 2.5m on Smith, you've still got over 10m to play with.
