With the way the teams are trending, are they? Maybe this year's, but Ottawa's a team on the rise and Pittsburgh's on the decline. By next year our picks might actually be higher.

Their 1st rounder this year will likely be around 12th overall in a well established terrific draft. The Penguins 1st rounder likely won't be much higher, if at all higher, than the Senators 1st rounder this year and the quality of the 2025 draft will likely be worse than the quality of the 2023 draft.

You can't say we could have beat that.

There's a lot of factors to go to these. Am I upset that we didn't grab him Absolutely, but those picks are better than what our picks would offer.

It's not apples the apples.
Sure they could have.

Why are we acting like that's a "Hextall fail"? The Senators picks are going to end up higher than the Penguins picks. The Penguins could have offered the same exact deal, but Arizona would be right for taking the Senators picks.
And it gives a clue that Hextall is thankfully seemingly thinking as I did.

Ottawa is only a few points behind us and will pass us in the next year or two. No guarantee at all they're better picks.

So up the ante? Everyone knew that a 1st was going back regardless, so try and beat the two 2nds with a better second part of the deal.

I just don't understand not wanting to pay a price for someone you want, especially with *this* club where draft picks that likely won't matter until 4 or 5 years down the line are involved.

We easily can say we could have beat that. It’s a pathetic return. Arizona got dunked.
With who? Pickering. Just because he was a first round pick isn't mean his values the first rounder.

It's definitely not apples to apples.

I'm pissed. We didn't get him but maybe we were never even really in the mix and we're just being used as leverage.

Ottawa's 1st This year is going to be better than ours.

Yeah we could’ve made a bad deal and got a 24 year old perfect solution to our d-core instead we can now pay assets for a player that “drives play” according to JFresh.
Who “drives play”?

100%. Moronic to defend it.

Up the ante with what, though? This team has like no assets.

I would have topped out at a 2023 1st, Pickering and a 2024 2nd. Would that have beaten this Senators offer? Maybe, but I wouldn't really claim definitely.

Then up the picks? We have every pick for the next three years.

Why act like this team is “committed to improving” and not acquire a piece like Chychrun?

With all of the above picks. 1st, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th. Who gives a shit?

Once again. This is why Tampa has 4 cup final appearances since 2015. They pay to play.

I’m mad we didn’t acquire Chychrun yet we are “ all in “.

This team is in the worst position it could possibly be right now. Inactive bullshit but saying they are a contender.
This is why I've turned so harshly on Hextall. He got greedy in the offseason by trying to bring back not just the core, but random bottom six pieces like Kapanen and Heinen. It was a prime opportunity to carve out a space in the lineup to rotate a cast of prospects - a few weeks for Puustinen, a few for Poulin, a few for Hallander, etc - and determine what you have there.

Instead, he spent to the cap, gave them no room for flexibility, didn't utilize LTIR when guys have been out for extended periods, and now has sat on his hands while the team obviously has holes.
