From a logistical pov it makes sense for a Chychrun deal to wait until the “last minute” for both sides. Arizona should try to get as much as possible and Penguins should try to wait as long as possible before coughing up what Arizona wants. I’d imagine another factor is what Chychrun wants, even if he doesn’t have a NTC he needs to waive or something, does his agent pressure Arizona to do it this season? I could imagine so if it’s Pitt and he wants to try to make the playoffs.

Why would the Pens having to clear cap be an impediment? Arizona can take on shit contracts the other way as long as they get their premium assets. Like toss McGinn and POJ in the package to clear the space with Arizona retaining whatever amount just to make the money work, so long as Arizona gets its draft picks/prospect combination.
The Coyotes are playing in a building that holds 5,000. They are operating with a Major Junior team budget. Money matters.

McGinn and Pettersson for Garland followed by pure futures for Chychrun works from a cap perspective.

Just saying

(Yes I know the Canucks won't trade for Pettersson after just trading for Hronek)

The flaw in that is the longer this goes, the fewer teams will be interested as they're making other moves instead. They've moved on.

I imagine they have to trade him between now and the draft because once his NTC kicks in, he's gonna f*** that team over hard. Dragging this out for like two seasons and sitting him for a month? Yeah, good luck Coyotes. If he's on that team on July 1st, they're getting like a 2nd, a Hallander-tier prospect and retaining like 50% of his salary.

I think Hextall's wife is "leaking" Pens' rumors after seeing her man get booed at the arena. He actually hasn't talked to anyone and is holed up in his office binging Breaking Bad reruns.

True, it’s still a gamble on Arizona’s part. I can’t imagine Chychrun will be happy to come back to Arizona after the deadline being held out for two weeks and having this over his head for two years.

They still have to meet the cap floor. Removing Chychrun without adding anything means they're roughly $2 million above the floor, but with only 5 defensemen on the roster. Taking on McGinn/POJ still sees them saving money while also staying above the cap floor, plus they get assets they want.

Watch Ghost have more points from now until the end of the season, and go farther in the playoffs than whatever team lands Chychrun.

I guess it's also worth pointing out that the Coyotes can just retain money on Chychrun to make it work from the Penguins cap perspective. You could have Arizona retain like $1 million on his deal, trade purely futures for him and then flip POJ for a forward or something like that. I really doubt this team will move Dumoulin prior to the deadline, but there are worse spots to be in than this defense:

Chychrun-Letang
Pettersson-Petry
Dumoulin-Rutta

After this year, Dumoulin walks and Smith jumps onto the 3rd pair. My big concern there is what forward you're getting back for POJ and whether that forward will help as much as POJ is helping this year.

I think the best you could possibly have with that is something like POJ for Hoglander and run with:

Guentzel-Crosby-Rakell
Zucker-Malkin-Puustinen
Hoglander-Carter-Rust
O'Connor-Blueger-Archibald

No they'll just keep him...that's what the fans keep saying. Ha

Which is why you stand pat, except maybe for some bargain basement leftover or two, and begin the rebuild with your picks and trades of deadweight for picks and kids in the minors, while keeping the core intact for that last run.

That is what they should do.

The difference between call ups from WBS and lower tier overpriced trade assets makes zero sense for this team.
I agree (said as much in a post either right before or after this one). I’d rather they do nothing. But most fans (and the players) will hate it

If Columbus is legitimately interested in Chychrun and I'm the Coyotes, that's where I'm sending him. Those 1st rounder(s) will be more valuable than 1sts from somebody like Pittsburgh. And the Jackets don't need Arizona to take back cap or retain iirc.

POJ's been real up and down this year. Has strong periods of play, notably early, but he's been real f***in' shaky for a big part of the past month or so.

It's gonna suck when this team re-signs Zucker, and Dumo. Man, I hope they don't.

If I was Chychrun, I'd pull a Roy if he isn't dealt. He will never play another game for the Coyotes. It's been that long they have been trying.

POJ is a rookie who could struggle as an every game 3LD in the playoffs. If we moved Pettersson in a deal we would do well to get a 3rd pair LD on an expiring contract.
