He's 25 at the end of the month, but yeah. I dunno. I think this team's getting two runs with Chychrun before you gotta either hand him a colossal contract with a restrictive NTC, or try and flip him to recoup some of the price paid to acquire him. With the way this team's been trending, I don't know that even the most optimistic believe this team's gonna have gas left in the tank by the 2025 playoffs. Again, at 27 you can probably turn around and move him to get some value back, but he'll be too old to build around for the next chapter (probably looking at a good five years minimum before this team's ready to challenge again, likely longer, putting Chychrun at 32+). Arizona's gonna try and play it smart and likely ask for the 2025 and 2026 1st rounders because they know this team's at the extreme tail end of the Sid/Geno era and those picks are likely to be top-10, maybe top-5.

I like Chychrun and whoever gets him is gonna be getting a very good player. I don't know that I believe that he's worth throwing every available asset this team's got at, because I don't think he's as long-term an option as his age would have one think. /shrug
Most 1rst rounders don't even play at the NHL level... maybe top 5 - 10. same as the NFL and NBA.. That is what they are looking to get for Chychrun.. and prospect.. It is those guys who work harder that you can find in 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Look at the pieces Toronto moved. We don’t have a Sandin or an Engvall to move out for space. And we don’t have a ROR who wants to play here (that’s a big factor in all of this)
I don't buy that really, we have Sandin in POJ and Engvall in McGinn or Kapanen (had). Toronto still had to do some wheeling and dealing to make the space but they did it. Sandin and Engvall were in separate deals as well after getting ROR.

That Toronto team's desperate to show something with their core and with the franchise not having won a playoff round in 20 years. Tampa's trying to make the most of their core's peak. The Rangers landed Tarasenko, who has been on his way out of St. Louis for years, and Kane strong-armed his way onto the team. The Devils have an exceptional core of young forwards and added another core piece moving forward (probably) with Meier.

With the Penguins, it feels like a team just trying to extend a playoff streak that realistically already ended with the Habs series. /shrug

If a Vancouver trade falls through, I wonder if Calgary would be willing to move Toffoli?

Further to
@PierreVLeBrun
report, the #hurricanes send a third-round pick to Arizona for Shayne Gostisbehere.

It’s easy to say that without being a GM.

I can comfortably say that Kap was available and no one was offering a 3rd round pick (or even close)

POJ has value. I won’t argue that. You want to move him for a 1st?

I just want them all-in either way. No half measures. Desperately try to claw out some playoff wins by bolstering this squad or go full on sell and sell every UFA and re-tool in the off season.

Either is fine by me tbh. Both defendable. I'd prefer the former, but would understand if they chose the latter route.

I just hate standing pat. I don't think Hextall will though.

I get this but Tampa, Toronto, and New York managed to pull trades. They weren't in any better position than us.

Tampa works outside of the NHL's reality. The NHL takes issue with trading someone and not allow them to be traded back for a year to the original team. Retention just re-enforces that. But Tampa was allowed to purchase a retiring contract with like 4 years term with significant cap. <---clearly to circumvent the cap, but they still okayed it. It's what's been making them able to stay competitive. They've been the full LTIR use since it began, and they have another year left of it. It has allowed them to take full advantage of the system.

It's really sad the NHL okayed that. I mean, to do it for a season while your player is out is one thing, the Pens even did so at the deadline for a brief stint, but to take it to 4 years of term is ridiculous.

Quick to Vegas (e4+)
As discussed on the podcast today, and now confirmed by sources, the Cegas Golden Knights appear to be getting Quick…

Gostisbehere to Carolina, presumably takes them out of the Chychrun mix.

Seriously, everything is lining up for the Pens to make a multifaceted deal with Arizona around Chychrun.
I still have this gut feeling somebody nobody's talking about like Buffalo is gonna come in last second and snag Chychrun. Columbus is also apparently trying to land the guy and has a surplus of picks due to selling off some pieces already.

My preference is to sell high on pieces like Zucker and Dumo, promote WBS players to fill out the roster to add youth/hunger and see what they have, then use those assets from Zucker and Dumo to try and land players when prices aren't asinine at the TDL. Or keep them to restock the cupboard. But that's not gonna happen.

I think I'd rather the team stand pat than to go all panicky and throw the kitchen sink and more at somebody. I don't know. Again, I like Chychrun but I don't think he does anything but get this team into a more secure playoff spot. I still don't believe this team's making it out of the 1st round, Chychrun or not, because they're still coached by Sullivan, have a real rough bottom-6, Letang's a shitshow (though Chychrun would hopefully help that--though Letang's issues aren't due to his partner's play imo) and their goaltending situation is sketchy as f***.

Kappy had value to someone - St. Louis but yeah I get your point.

And yeah, while it is "easy to say without being a GM", the proof is in the pudding that deals can be swung with being tight against the cap with meager assets.

If cap space is an issue in say, getting Boeser or Miller here, has Hextall tried making deals with Billy G or Arizona, two teams that said they would facilitate such deals? Or is he too attached to that 4th or 5th round pick?
