And arguably has all of size, forechecking, and grit.

Yeah hypothetically. We know the truth. But that's what people are paying for.

We defintely get 2nd round picks and even a 1st if we retain on the contracts, I'm 100% sure. But we will never know since our Gm is not going to be selling and buying.

If we get a 1st for Zucker or Dumo I'll change my name to Bigger Friggin' Dummy

I wholeheartedly agree with your first point. If we would move either of those two players we most certainly would get a nice haul back.

Hextall is waiting for the asks to come down as the TDL hits Friday. But the issue to me is Hextall will not move Sullys guys and Dumo is a Sully guy. Cant move Carter unless he agrees and Pens eat money. In the end Hextall has more hits than misses but his misses were very costly. Letang, Malkin and Rust were money issues but they were going to be here. Adding Rakell was a good move and jury is out on the Petry deal. But even if giving up 2025 and 2026 firsts lottery protected picks, by then Pens will be in rebuild mode and will sell off said assets for picks then.
How does he have more hits than misses?

Misses:
-Re-signing CDS
-Qualifying Kap
-Signing McGinn to a 4 year deal
-Giving Carter a NMC
-Donating McCann
-Protecting Blueger and Carter at the expansion draft
-Keeping a stale roster
-Marino trade
-Cap issues
-Never trying AHL players
-Afraid if his own shadow

Hits
-Rakell

TBD
-Petry

Trading two firsts for Chychrun is such a no brainer. They still have basically all their other picks, they won’t be like Toronto or Tampa.

8 mil for a 70+ pt player is awful?

Everyone here wanted to acquire him a few months ago and that was going to be the cost of the contract.
I can see the argument that it will be awful because of him being hypothetically bad in a few seasons, but that's more of a worry for younger teams and not us.

Lol now Hextall is in on JT Miller after he signed that awful contract.

We’re going to end up with Bonino or Bjugstad…and love it lol

Only if this year’s first is lottery protected and it’s next year’s pick…2025 and 26 are no goes imo

Miller would be fine if we can get him 1M retained (Kessel was 1.3), but he's got attitude issues. Saw him screaming at his goalie to get off the ice while Miller was behind the net. Like why would a goalie do that? he clashes with teammates.

His role here will not make him a 70+ point player since he won’t be centering the top two lines in the near future…but if VAN retains about $1.5 M for life of the contract then that’s worth it for us

WTF does a Miller trade even look like?

It would have to include Rust/Pettersson no? Or someone with a long term contract?

We can easily afford his new contract and he makes sub 6 million this year so we could probably move out cap to afford it.

I think if they retain on the old contract they have to retain on the new.

If he yells at crappy goalies, he shouldn’t come here.

I’m not as concerned about that. I’d trust the core group of the locker room to keep him in check.

I don’t think you can make Miller’s $8 million contract work next year tbh. It would be nice to have him once the cap starts going up a lot, but fitting him in next year would be extremely difficult without leaving clear holes in other spots on your roster.

Capfriendly projects us to have over 22 million in space for next season. Hypothetically, if we were to dump McGinn and get Miller, we'd have just over 17 million left.

When you look at the available names, outside of Chycrhun, there's really no more big fish that would make us measurably better. Let's assume we don't get him for argument's sake - at that point, it's really about rearranging the chairs to see if something clicks. You may try a couple 2016-like trades - Perron for Hags, Schultz for a 3rd, etc. and then hope that things just work out.

With that, I think Hextall seriously has to consider one or two shake up trades. Get Bleuger off the roster. Get McGinn, if possible, off the roster and replace them with equivalents. The returns don't have to be "better" but they do have to be "different". This roster is as stale of a Penguins roster as I've even seen.

Hextall doesn't have to rope the room by Friday. But doing SOMETHING is a requirement. If he stands pat and they miss or lose in round 1, there is no doubt he is shown the door. If you make 2-3 trades and it's a 4-2 series where we are close (even like last year), then you may get the benefit of the doubt. Sleeping on this stale, bleeding wound of a team...not what NHL GMs who are good at their job do.
