When you look at the available names, outside of Chycrhun, there's really no more big fish that would make us measurably better. Let's assume we don't get him for argument's sake - at that point, it's really about rearranging the chairs to see if something clicks. You may try a couple 2016-like trades - Perron for Hags, Schultz for a 3rd, etc. and then hope that things just work out.
With that, I think Hextall seriously has to consider one or two shake up trades. Get Bleuger off the roster. Get McGinn, if possible, off the roster and replace them with equivalents. The returns don't have to be "better" but they do have to be "different". This roster is as stale of a Penguins roster as I've even seen.
Hextall doesn't have to rope the room by Friday. But doing SOMETHING is a requirement. If he stands pat and they miss or lose in round 1, there is no doubt he is shown the door. If you make 2-3 trades and it's a 4-2 series where we are close (even like last year), then you may get the benefit of the doubt. Sleeping on this stale, bleeding wound of a team...not what NHL GMs who are good at their job do.
