Not really, he’s better than both

Really? Are the standards that low in Pittsburgh?
Lemieux
Crosby
Jagr
Malkin

Is how I'd rank them.

And it's actually the opposite regarding standards. They're very stingy, they didn't retire Barrasso, Francis, or Coffey. That's why I'm doubtful they retire Fleury or Letang, but you never know. They do have time spent with the club on their side.

Needed to wait a while for the hate to die down. He was still getting booed every time he touched the puck as recently as 2015. But #68 getting retired was inevitable - all 5 of his art rosses and both cups were won with the penguins. Time heals all wounds.

It’s interesting to see the responses in this thread. I find younger fans typically aren’t aware of how ugly it ended up between Jagr and the Pens. He did a lot of “brand management” toward the end of his career to smooth over those memories.

I know Jagr played until he was 100 but it still feels like this should have happened a long time ago :P

What? Why would they wait until they stop playing? Jagr has finally retired unless his team Is desperate for bodies again.

Jagr’s tenure with the Penguins was one largely filled with self proclaimed sacrifice, little success, and a prima donna attitude.

Not really, he’s better than both

Lol. Certainly not as a Penguin.

I don’t think he deserves to have his number retired. Fantastic player, but his time with the Penguins was largely not successful.

Not successful?

Winning 2 stanley cups, scoring 24 playoff points as a 19 year old kid and a couple of game winning OT goals in those cup years. + 5 art rosses and having the best or next best point per game average in the NHL in 7 of 11 years he played for the Penguins.

And when Mario retired he dragged a shit roster to the playoffs every season.

Not successful? I am not sure anyone was ever successful then that dont have 3 or 4 cups in 10 years with the same team.

Yeah, I mean, I’m aware about who played for the penguins, hence I though it was weird to mention Letang among those names.

In terms of meaning to the Penguins, I can understand why one ranks Crosby ahead of Jagr, but not in terms of skill or talent ofc

The Penguins weren’t successful.

Jagr was.

He was a footnote in the two cup runs in the 90s outside of his brilliant goal against Chicago.

This isn’t about the player IMO. It’s about what the player meant to the franchise and as a huge fan of Jags at the time he’s maybe 6th or 7th in franchise history after what the Sid and Geno group did.

Glad for him. All-time great player who carried the torch for the Pens through a good chunk of the firesale years and was underappreciated for it. Like being questioned for his desire while upsetting number 1 teams while playing on one leg.

37 points in 45 games during these two playoffs, a footnote, lol.

GROUP, check that out. Jagr was alone at his time in Pittsburgh. He did not have a healthy Crosby or Malkin for his entire career to get support from. He barely got any years with Mario in his prime & healthy outside the cup seasons.

If you expected Jagr to lead the Penguins to cups after Mario retired you must see completely different rosters than most other people do.

Most people in europe that are Penguins fans became Pens fans because of what Jagr did during his Penguins years, he is a Penguins icon to most people. Not everything is measured in cups.

Jagr had Ron Francis or Mario Lemieux every year outside of two. In those years he had the Straka, Kovalev, Lang line.

Crosby and Malkin had many years with a worse roster than what Jags had in the late 90s.
