If we're raking guys over coals for dips in production, even lengthy ones, this entire team is in deep shit outside of Sid and Geno.

I'm not really interested in faulting Kahun for not lighting it up with the "opportunities" he was afforded and the injuries he dealt with.

Dude's a good player. He's not Rust, or Zucker, or Jake, but he's a really solid player that we should've put through the paces to see what we had, imo. The coaching staff just never trusted him enough to do so, even amidst some crazy injury woes to this roster.

He did well in the few opportunities he got with Malkin and Rust. Never got a chance to play with Sid. If he had a fraction of the opportunities ZAR and Simon got he would've shown why he's the better player. And even with the dip in production towards the end he still looked good.

ZAR and Kahun got the same amount of 5v5 ice time and Kahun got the opportunity to play with Malkin and Rust which ZAR hasn’t this year. Not sure I buy this one.

Kahun is immediately Buffalo’s third best winger. That’s why they are out of the playoffs.

He did. That doesn’t change the fact he was given opportunities and most of his production came from playing with McCann as a 2nd line winger not with Geno. Which is where we needed someone. With Geno or Sid.

Yeah Sully still has his guys that he trusts and guys that he doesn't and it doesn't always line up with reality. It's no worse than other coaches though and he has a lot of positives. Johnson on the first pairing is Bylsma playing Gladams against top lines and at ends of games level stupid, but at least a lot of other decisions are better.

I think Sully just prefers balance vs minimising the negatives on the roster. He's done that pretty consistently. Not many coaches would have decided that Sheary - Sid - Hornqvist was going to be our defensive line or put Kessel on a third line. So he's playing Johnson with Sid and Letang because it's the least bad option for Johnson. It means it's killing two of our 3 biggest threats, but it gives the other lines a chance. Maybe he's thinking long term and trying to get MP and Schultz going too?

The Riikola thing has to be personal though, his analytics and eye test both look good. Sully's decided he doesn't trust him and nothing is going to change it. JR should have just traded him already, it's not fair to Riikola. There's no way Sully didn't see how bad Trotman was in the first game, playing him again was completely indefensible.
