A lot of these contracts outside of the forwards look extremely low. Forwards actually look largely high.

Severson. Varlamov. Koprisalo stick out to me.

Feel like Severson gets 7 - 8 mil in UFA.

If someone gives Severson that sort of money then they're going to have big regrets. He's a 2nd pairing dman.

Or just play Granlund, sign a shooter to play next to him, and hope for a Zucker like resurgence. Remember when we had to give a first up to get a team to take Zucker?

Honestly, this roster is going to be filled top to bottom with taking lottery pick level chances.

No matter the calls made there will be risks of failure. So many gambles and risks that this team's chances of an actual cup run are not huge.

Not the least of which are does anyone believe that on the most injured team year in year out in the entire NHL for decades that Crosby and Malkin will remain healthy all year again? Not to mention Letang, Jake, the goalies, etc.?

Keeping Ganlund and trying to make him work instead of paying to make him go away seems like the least chancy gamble.
or at least get his value up a little so we can move him for something.

Imagine how much more optimistic we'd all feel about shit if Hextall didn't pick up the JR "f*** the team up as badly as you can" baton right as JR left the door and kept running with it.

Having an extra $8.1 million by not being saddled with Carter and Granlund would be f***in' sweet. Hell, a full $9 million if JR hadn't given JJ, arguably the worst player in the league, a five year deal he would later have to buy out.

Cool!

He probably doesn't make that asinine trade if people weren't chanting for his firing.

It is still inconceivable that he did not discuss retention. But this was a decision where Hextall's brain was fully shut off. He was going to make a move, get a name, he had mentally committed to moving the 2nd and he had the cap space. Prove he wasn't sleepy.

It's either that or he knew he was a dead man walking and wanted to send one last f*** you to Sullivan, the fans and ownership on his way out. The move was so bewildering and rudderless that you're just kinda left scrambling for anything to give an idea as to why it played out like it did. Just absolutely brainless shit. Bad player, awful contract with term, and a horrendous fit.

I know I have said that they shouldn't keep one of Smith or POJ as a healthy scratch, but after looking at the UFA market for LD, I may be a bit more lenient towards that. This is the projection of the UFA class for any LD making over $2 million a year:

-Cole: 2 years at $2.7 million AAV
-Dumoulin: 3 years at $4.1 million AAV
-Gavrikov: 5 years at $4.9 million AAV
-Gostisbehere: 4 years at $4.8 million AAV
-Graves: 5 years at $5.1 million AAV
-Gustafsson: 3 years at $3.4 million
-Mikkola: 3 years at $2.6 million AAV
-Orlov: 5 years at $6.3 million AAV
-Soucy: 3 years at $2.5 million AAV

This class already sucks to begin with, but it becomes even more painful when trying to find an ideal D partner for Letang or Petry. If they can't afford Graves, I think the next best option is Soucy but with Pettersson-Letang and Soucy-Petry being the D pairs. At that point, I would be okay with having both POJ and Smith as options in case of an injury.

Meh. This free agent class kinda sucks anyways so being saddled with a bit less cap space isn't the end of the world.

Hextall getting himself fired and getting us Dubas might be the best thing to happen to this franchise since JR hit a couple home runs so this painful past season might be for the better in the long run.

At least now we have leadership in place who should be able to guide us into the next era of Pens hockey.

FWIW I'm not really interested in getting into a bidding war over any FAs, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be--happy isn't the right word, but have my interest piqued a bit--in the immediate if this team somehow landed, for example, Barbashev and Bunting at forward with Graves or Gavrikov on defense. Having that extra breathing room from not being saddled with two turds making north of $8 million a year would go a long way toward that.

But like you said, we'll see how it all goes. At least Dubas doesn't seem like an absolute doofus like JR and Hextall were. I'm sure he won't be flawless in his decisions but I also have to imagine there will be actual thought behind each move as opposed to the previous two guys just f***in' winging it.

Ideal signings.

Barbashev Bunting Graves for 16 million total.

I guess Bunting at 5.25 for let's say 5 or 6 years
Barbashev 5 for 5 years
Graves at 5 x 5

I'd really be interested in that.

I would like to kick the tires on Debrincat however I have 0 interest trading for him. If he was a UFA I'd throw 8.5 million his way

He's a #4D as long as he's got a couple of guys ahead of him who are legitimate top pairing defenders and if he's paired with a safety blanket. I'd feel more comfortable with him as a #5D if the guys ahead of him aren't elite.

I hope the Pens have no interest in him because he's not better than Letang or Petry and I'd prefer Rutta's style of player (and cap hit) for the bottom pairing over Severson.

I don't want anything to do with him.

Maybe I just always catch his worst games, but about 99% of the time I've watched the Devils he's reminded me of "bad Letang" but without the good Letang moments to offset it. Like, he makes the same sort of "what are you even thinking?" plays that we curse Letang for, but without the upside Letang brings to negate the negatives.

I wouldn't pay Barbashev $5 million a year. I don't think he's a long-term solution to a team's top-6 and you absolutely shouldn't be paying him $5 million a year to be a 3rd liner.

My off-season dream scenario would be Bunting, Graves and Brown all getting long-term deals in free agency. Graves is a longshot but I feel like Brown and Bunting are totally possible.
