The tax differential between MTL (highest in the NHL) and Pittsburgh would wipe out that $1M difference between the Pens offering $7M and MTL offering $8M.

Also, does Letang want to play for a playoff team, or one of the worst teams in the NHL?
The tax differential may be more complicated. Keep in mind, NHL players have to pay state, provincial and national non-resident income taxes for all away games, regardless of their residency. We CPA/Chartered Accountants love this shit, because the associated tax returns are complex PITAs, and we bill the f*** out of it for that work.

I’ll be more upset about Geno leaving if I have to see him play the Pens all the time on a division rival. If the Pens let him walk and he doesn’t sign somewhere for $8+ mil, I’ll be livid with the FO

If Letang signs something like 8,5m/4y, would Malkin take 7m/3y? I very much doubt it

That is fair value?

Malkin has made like $40M more in salary than Letang during his career. He should recognize who the better player is at this juncture.

Well that would be Letang taking fair value, so Malkin should take fair value as well. Which $7 million a year sounds about right for fair value.

I’d be happy getting pool party

The issue with Puljujarvi is that he's a really dumb player that is horrendous with finishing.

Puljujarvi would be a good option as a pure puck retriever and a defensive focus on a line, which I guess my Iaffalo idea would fall in the same category. But the issue is that he'll offer Malkin absolutely no help offensively. You need to pair Malkin and Puljujarvi with a great scoring winger.

The Zucker/Iafallo thing makes me think...

Man, what if teams really, really don't want to take on salary this year? Like if we have a pay a 1st to dump Zuck, I ain't doing it. I'm making hockey trades for Dumo and Marino who other teams would actually get for their own sake, not as contract boneyards.

Eh I'm not super worried about that. Anaheim, Detroit, Buffalo and Arizona are all over $10 million below the cap floor. It's not going to cost that much to get rid of players this year, especially with the safe projections about the cap going forward.

The cap is only rising $1 million this year, but the NHL is pulling in revenue that will have the cap rising to well above where it is now once the COVID debts are paid off.

Not excited about bringing back CDS. He's Spazzy McGee with a horrendous stick side and you have no idea how he's going to look after his core surgery. This is the guy who was so bad for part of the season we wanted him gone and Sully rightfully didn't play him. I'm not convinced Lindberg doesn't end up the better option by the end of the season, and then what? You've got a 3rd stringer on a multi-year deal, good luck moving that. Hard pass.

Might only be 1 million dollar increases for the next 2-3 years

Eh I don't know that stashing DeSmith in WBS at $1.75 million or whatever is really that big of an issue. If anything, it would be nice to have the goalie depth where Lindberg/Blomqvist end up better, you can just stash DeSmith in WBS and only face like a $700k cap penalty.

You're one sick f***.

Ah yes, that is indeed the main obstacle between Empo and Emma Watson.

It's interesting that he could play lock down hockey at Colorado but couldn't do anything correct here?

1. Maybe it's a little hyperbole (on how bad/good he plays)
2. Maybe coaching and systems DO MATTER....

Jack Johnson hasn't been able to do anything correct in every city he has played in.

Don't confuse the Avs winning the cup with meaning that Johnson did anything correct there. Johnson was just as big of an analytical trainwreck in Colorado as he was everywhere else.

JJ had some weird (edit: playoff) stats.

Team on-ice shoot % = 15.25% team high
Team on-ice SV% = .840% team low

The Hagelin & Hornqvist model worked really well for Geno. He scored 42 goals that year and only missed 4 regular season games.

I definitely like the idea of trying to find the next Nuke, but I don't think that's gonna be Puljujarvi. Nuke's early career was driven into the ground to near bust territory by Hitchcock. Puljujarvi's just a bigger Kapanen with a somehow even lower hockey IQ.

I get that not everything can be done at once, but I really think the main focus for that 2nd line is somehow throwing a big enough contract at somebody like Forsberg or Gaudreau--though the latter is definitely gonna end up in Philly or NJ.

Yeah and I think this hurt, because he gave him some big speech in pre-season with massive expectations.
When Kap didn't live up to them early, he got down on himself and after that his effort declined.

There was no such work ethic problem early in the season. He just wasn't finishing and his linemates weren't either.

I don't agree that he's not a scoring winger. Think he's not gonna be a good one per se, but on bad teams he can crack 2nd lines and be alright.
Turns 26 in July. Things may change.
he is who he is. we are bettr off without him clogging that middle 6 with his mediocre output and not at least giving a chance someone else to surprise

Even if Puljujarvi has that whole unpolished gem thing going on, he certainly isn't gonna find his absolute ceiling on this team.
