I think some people are saying they would have preferred to lose just McCann for nothing over losing both McCann and Tanev for a 7th rd pick and Hallander.

So people would've just been happy going back with the same exact roster as last year as the plan? Because that's what happens if you lose McCann and no one else.

I must've confused the incessant bitching about the team over the last three years for "keep everything the same".

Yeah, if it's true that the entirety of the roster is a problem, you start piecing out the guys like McCann and Tanev--eventually working up to Jake and Rust if/when we suffer another 1st round (or maybe 2nd! *gasp*) exit next spring.

I'm so confused why people are so upset.

Since Hextall has come in he's done three things.

Carter trade. Low cost, huge return.
McCann trade. Bad trade, but given the circumstances Seattle was selecting McCann so we got a return back for a player we most likely didn't want to give up.
Tanev lost to ED. Bad contract, solid player. Easily replaceable compared to the potential of Jason Zucker.

McCann trade wasn’t bad - not sure why that is such a common belief around here.

Dude is a 25 year old journeyman that was traded for fair value.

His new team didn’t even want him, which should clue people in about how low his value is.

He has literally had four teams not want him. People really need to take a hint here.

Pens won the division and Sullivan is a coach who now needs to be flexible. Will he? Who knows. Crosby was hurt by the playoffs, Malkin was on one leg. Jarry was poor and yet they had the advantage of play in the Islanders series. Pens have 7.5 million in cap space and moving Petts add to that.
So at least Hextall can make some adds here.

 Should have said "sign UFA" "No that UFA" "only sign UFA"

I wouldn't be surprised at all if McCann goes to Seattle and lights it up. He's talented enough to do that. But I just fundamentally don't understand how people can be mad about losing him after his ghosting performances he has given in the playoffs in his entire time with the Penguins. I'd understand patience if Crosby and Malkin were 27 and it was 2014, but they're not 27 and it's not 2014.

This team is 5-15 in their last 4 playoff series. McCann has 0 goals and 3 points in 12 playoff games for the Penguins, while being a healthy scratch in at least 1 of those playoff series (can't remember if he was hurt or scratched in 2019). McCann isn't cheap enough and doesn't have a high enough upside for the Penguins to wait through his playoff struggles to see if he figures it out.

My only gripe about McCann is that he was a tradeable asset...as we saw...and we only got a prospect back. Part of the larger picture I get, but now we either have to go to the UFA market or use additional assets to replace him. If he has the ability to light it up, then it's not a smart thing that we got rid of him. Yeah, playoffs have sucked for him but they've sucked for everyone. What were Jake Guentzel's stats like relatively speaking? It's not McCann, it's the asset. A new, different McCann would have been better than nothing.

Why would McCann not command 4/5 million if he is going to produce at the rate he did this year? Even if he produces at 35 points he is definitely getting a raise.

What makes you think the only moves we are making are at UFA?

I fully expect a trade this off season...I just don't know what it is so I can only talk about the now.

They did win their division so it’s not like this is a bad team.

However, I can’t wrap my head around being upset about them losing anyone really - let alone the guys triggering people.

I think a fair gripe is also that not trading McCann might have allowed us to keep Tanev, if we were willing to sweeten the pot a bit. (Caveat: nobody knows what the ask might have been). Either way, I'm now perfectly at peace with the ED and look forward to not thinking about it again for the foreseeable future.

Don't worry... the owners will want another sweet, sweet 100M dollar expansion fee to divvy up between them again soon enough.

I think it’s as simple as the Pens needing cap space for a goalie and cap space being way more valuable than depth players in this economy.

I think you're right but I'm also concerned why Hextall thinks he needs that much cap space to fix the goalie situation.

I can only see one of two options: he plans on keeping Jarry or he plans on going really expensive (as in more than $6 million) with the starter. I don't like either of those options.

In principle, I don't mind the expansion draft. Expansions are good for the league in the long-run, plus a big expansion like the WHA-NHL merger in 1979 led to our favorite firewagon era of hockey. But eh... :dunno:

I know everyone likes the excitement and Vegas has been a success so far but I'm just not a big believer that all this was truly wise.
