While I'm extraordinarily skeptical of Sullivan at the moment and I think Reirden should have been shown the door a month ago, I do appreciate the hesitancy about canning Sullivan concerning "suitable replacements".
I think there has to be interviews between Dubas (who has already, presumably, talked to the players) and the new coach candidates that center around philosophy and the system they intend to implement and whether or not it's a good fit for this team. I don't think just anyone can come in and coach this team in a way that would just be automatically better than Sullivan.
For example, Bruce Boudreau. BB has always run a very offensive system. One that opens the doors for offensive-minded guys to do what they do best. His results speak for themselves on that front. And while I would love to bring more offense to the table, you look at the results we've recently had with aggressive forecheck, offensive-minded systems...it's not good. We did a lot better playing a NZ support, counter-punch style. And that's largely because of the players we have. We don't have a bunch of young, speedy, gritty players anymore. We have a punch of middle and older-aged guys who don't have the jets and endurance anymore to play those styles.
So yeah, the coaching philosophy and results from implementing systems that are likely to work with this current group are important in our next coaching search. While I would not balk one bit of canning Sullivan, I do detect a bit of flippancy from this board on how easy they think it is to replace him. This isn't the forward group from 10 years ago that can overcome systematic shortcomings based on skill alone. They need the structure, they need a custom-fit system, and they need the accountability.
However, in this case the praise was so strong for Sully that I'm not sure his firing is going to come.
If anything I bet the Pens just start trading assets and then try again with Sully next year and that Dubas eats the L on this season.
Set emotion aside for a moment. There is absolutely an argument to fire Sullivan and the staff.
But you need to have a plan for what comes next. What style of coach? What kind of experience? Do you want someone for the immediate future? Or do you want someone who could maybe provide a jolt of energy now but also help shorten whatever transition there will be after the core is gone?
Personally, I'm a believer that you never want to be in a position where you have to hire out of desperation. Good managers and leaders always have a succession plan for key employees and make a move when they can best enact that plan.
Maybe I'm projecting, but I don't think Dubas likes the available coaching candidates. He doesn't have anyone internal like the Pens did with Sullivan or Dubas did with Keefe when he fired Babcock. But I bet there are coaches he'd target in the offseason.
No one wants to hear that because you're all done with Sullivan, but it might be the most pragmatic approach.
I hate that you're probably right.
But there's nuance to this particular situation. If this was any other team, we'd all be insane for wanting Dubas in less than a year to can a coach. But the window is literally inching closer to shut every game that goes by.
People are ridiculous if they think this is a SC contender. But this team should absolutely not be fighting for it's playoff life in December.
We are firmly out of the playoff picture without a huge swing.
Yes and no. He DID switch the aggressive forecheck to a NZ support system which has made us look better. 5v5, we aren't bad. It's the PP that is actively losing us games.lol…all of which they’re not getting from Sullivan, so I don’t think we’d have a problem replacing him…
The scheme adjustments like this one aren’t consistent game to game…just ask @JesseYes and no. He DID switch the aggressive forecheck to a NZ support system which has made us look better. 5v5, we aren't bad. It's the PP that is actively losing us games.
Don't even care about that.I read those quotes and thought how really freaking depressing.
This shit show hasn't been enjoyable for several years and the things are only going south.
Jagr's jersey retirement ceremony is the only thing you can get exited about and looking forward to now. Not the Penguins hockey.![]()
Sidney Crosby on Penguins: "Evaluate your game for what it is and be honest about it" For all you Geniuses Kissing Sid's assLol these morons are actually gonna hitch the wagon to Sullivan. Sullivans gotta have God tier interview skills because he's convinced everyone he's some kind of genius. I wish I could be shit at my job and still get gassed up by everyone in the organization.
Sullivan's the weatherman of coaching.Lol these morons are actually gonna hitch the wagon to Sullivan. Sullivans gotta have God tier interview skills because he's convinced everyone he's some kind of genius. I wish I could be shit at my job and still get gassed up by everyone in the organization.
Meanwhile Washington is surging despite having an old and significantly more shit roster because they have a young and up and coming coach who isn't stale and predictable and can properly evaluate the players on this roster because he doesn't have 8 years worth of biases clouding his decision making.Sullivan isn't gonna be fired this season. That's what things boil down to. Dubas wasn't just supporting his coach, he was heaping praise and talking about him being here far into the future.
If a coach was genuinely on the hot seat right now, you don't say things like that.
They're going to pursue every other option before axing Sullivan.
We're basically f***ed.
