Speculation: Penguins off day talk thread: Yes, Sully is still the coach

The full Sullivan quote:

"as soon as the team doesn't reach its potential..."

mf it's been like 6 years since they've won a playoff round. What a slap in the face to the fans...

And the lip service about the Powerplay... I hate that he's continuing to speak as though these problems are JUST beginning to happen and everyone is immediately flipping out at the drop of a hat. It's been so long that these struggles have been going on.

It could be a little bit of both. I think Dubas likes Sullivan's approach with managing a team on a day-to-day basis, but could potentially use some fresh ideas around him. That said, as a few folks on here have pointed out, it's rare to see an assistant coach fired midseason unless he's getting canned alongside a head coach.

I think Dubas is going to continue to evaluate the entire staff the rest of the season and any changes would come in the offseason.

In the meantime, he'll continue to work on the roster.
While I agree with everything you said, it's also rare to have an 0-for-36(?) PP.

Maybe I just can't wrap my mind around the things Dubas just said.

But then again, he can't just come out and say yeah, Mike sucks. For all we know, Dubas could have already interviewed a couple candidates, but hasn't found one with the right tools for the job. So he has to maintain a certain front in this in-between time until he finds the right candidate.

Again, just more of me not knowing how to process what I just heard.

Either that, or they're absolutely snowed into believing Sullivan's God's gift to coaching.

Either way we're f***ed.
Considering they negotiated a contract extension with Sullivan behind Hextall’s back last year probably means it’s the latter. Which say what you want about Hextall but that was completely BS for FSG to do.

If Dubas just said “Mike is the man for this job” I’d be inclined to think maybe he’s thinking on from moving him. For some reason, that “for now and for the future” part makes me think he’s serious.

The All Star Break!?!?! That's still 2 months away.....

Meaning he’ll pivot to selling.

For now and the future was a kick to the stomach for sure.

Got rid of Blysma after having a very good regular season, while being one game away from the ECF, with rotation of guys in the bottom 6 who weren't NHL caliber.

Gonna let this clown hang around much longer it seems after 5 years of nothing.

It's idiotic how they're acting as though this poor play has JUST happened and so they need more time to evaluate what the issue is.

Boys, this isn't a bad 20 game stretch where you don't want to overreact. It's going on 5 years of futility with the exact same issues continually popping up.

Spoiler alert: IT'S THE f***ING COACH.

When they get to the AS break and are still awful it'll be "well we really need to give them the rest of the year to get a good read on where we are as a team and what, if any, adjustments need to be made." It's only been like seven years of failure. One can't be too hasty.

It really is the meme of that dog saying "this is fine" as everything burns around him.

Seems like the Canadian teams have their GMs do a press conference every so often and Dubas is following that pattern.

Plus, it's a bit of a PR move. Support the coach, maybe try to remove any tension, try to control the narrative, etc.

Not saying any of that actually works, but that's the intended purpose of these things sometimes.

Scoring a PP goal would also remove some of the tension, but it's easier to do press conferences.

He's got that Tomlin invisibility. Just non stop sucking up by the mainstream, as if the last round he won wasn't when Brassard was on the team.

It's OK. They'll announce Jake's $8Mx8 contract as a consolation to give the fans hope for the future.

I get the defenseman seem to like Reirden but is there a rule on how many assistant coaches they can hire? Or perhaps a special assistant title or something to bring in a guy who just coaches the power play? I didn’t hear anything reassuring in this press conference other than eventually they’ll be okay probably….

It's all Dubas' fault that he didn't give Mike Sullivan the roster he needed this year. Sullivan can't be blamed.

Also not that this has to do with anything but don't look back a few months as to what the commonly-held opinion was in regards to the line of communication between this coach and GM. Totally unrelated. Not even sure why I mentioned that.
