Speculation: Penguins off day talk thread: Yes, Sully is still the coach

This was my concern with Dubas. Wasn’t a roster building standpoint or how he is with trades or free agency. It’s that he’s hesitant to fire coaches. Did it with Keefe in Toronto.

I don't know if he's right, but I'm not surprised that Dubas is pointing to the Pens' overall process in other areas - 5-on-5, goaltending, PK - as reasons to not shake things up too much. For a guy who utilizes data as part of his decisions, there is an argument that the Pens are due a positive course correction.

But numbers can be misleading, too. If your shots are all unscreened fluff balls from the perimeter, it doesn't matter how nice your possession numbers are.

You know it can both be true that Sullivan is a horrendous coach and the Penguins are spiraling down the drain right now mostly due to injuries, right? I know most people on here can't understand nuance, but still.

And with the Capitals, guess what they did last off-season? They fired their coach. It's almost like it's possible that multiple things can be wrong with a team.

You don’t always have to be right and neither do I. Please don’t choose me as the reply person. I’m here for laughter and to enjoy some hockey. It’s ok for people to disagree.

Edit* one second thought, best way to handle this “I know most people on here can't understand nuance, but still. ”

Yes you are correct with any and all view points. Have a nice day.

Confirmed: Slippery Pete and Frankie will be joining the Penguins staff as assistants.

Why would anyone who has been following this team even casually for a few years now think that Mike Sullivan is actually going to get fired? Hell they won't even shitcan a dork like Toddddddddddd much less The Mayor™

Was Dubas asked about Sullivan directly? And did anyone ask him about the rest of the coaching staff? As much as I want Sullivan gone, I can understand the thinking that everything is working except for the PP.

Hey Dumbass, sorry, I meant Dubas, you traded a number one that is very likely to be a lottery pick either this season or next. Sounds like the GM for the Sharks understood your situation much better than you band of 30 something parrots.

I could do the job better part time and drunk. Fact.
Me too.

AND for a lot less money.

Hire us instead, FSG.

Other quotes have already been posted, but I know the board will love this esoteric one.

LMAO, wtf does that mean? What's Kyle's definition of "digging"?

The pessimist in me reads this and immediately thinks the same thoughts that most of the board has about this.

The optimist in me reads this, doesn't see any mention of Reirden, and becomes hopeful that at least a change could be coming there.
It could be a little bit of both. I think Dubas likes Sullivan's approach with managing a team on a day-to-day basis, but could potentially use some fresh ideas around him. That said, as a few folks on here have pointed out, it's rare to see an assistant coach fired midseason unless he's getting canned alongside a head coach.

I think Dubas is going to continue to evaluate the entire staff the rest of the season and any changes would come in the offseason.

In the meantime, he'll continue to work on the roster.

Dubas on the advanced statistics: "No one really wants to hear about the underlying numbers. ... [The fans] want to see execution on the ice."

My man, this applies to this board as well lol.

• Going right into power play work after some skills work.

PP1: Erik Karlsson, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jake Guentzel, Valtteri Puustinen.

PP2: Kris Letang, Jeff Carter, Vinnie Hinostroza, Jansen Harkins, Reilly Smith

• They're working on the power play first without any penalty-killers. Baby steps.
Our PP is so bad we probably still won't score even without PKers out there.

"That damn goalie. He keeps saving all our telegraphed, 50 foot, unscreened shots from bad angles! I don't know what else to do!"

What the hell was the point of that press conference?
Seems like the Canadian teams have their GMs do a press conference every so often and Dubas is following that pattern.

Plus, it's a bit of a PR move. Support the coach, maybe try to remove any tension, try to control the narrative, etc.

Not saying any of that actually works, but that's the intended purpose of these things sometimes.

Yeah a tension remover seems accurate here. For the fans and players as well. Not saying it works, but all good.
