Speculation: Penguins off day talk thread: Yes, Sully is still the coach

For starters, why is he sitting down with Sullivan to evaluate the season at the end of the year? Why include Sullivan in that statement? He could have just said HE (Dubas) will sit down with his assistants to evaluate the season.

Including Sullivan sounds pretty much like he's getting Sullivan's opinion on where the team/roster needs to go from here.
You don't have annual reviews with your boss?

Those sessions can sometimes change a person's job status. Hell, it happened with Dubas last year. His conversations with Shanahan and MLSE completely altered his future, as they chose not to extend his contract and he landed with the Penguins. If those conversations go differently, maybe Dubas stays in Toronto.

If Sullivan is combative or refuses to change anything during that conversation, that probably increases the odds of him being canned. If he's willing to change various things, it might increase the odds of him staying.

It's unfathomable that Sullivan is still employed. There are no words as to why Reirden is still employed.

"Blackmail" is one that comes to mind.

I just don’t think Reirden does anything on his own… I’m sure he has something to say and Sullivan lets him run the white board, but firing him to me would be like ousting Mussolini’s secretary…who the bleep cares lol

Hey great... then it's an empty gesture in the end but it's SOMETHING. It's at least action of some sort. Somebody lost their damned job over this mess. Holding a press conference to be all like "la dee dah everything is terrific please keep giving us money!" is insulting.

I'll admit to some disappointment with Dubas. Slow to in-season trades, coaching staff untouchable, lack of desire to win in the future too.
I expected more eagerness and him being more proactive. When he came here he fired a bunch of staff. His hunger has diminished.

It should be within the confines of reality…31 other teams would have fired him…our ownership is stupid..

Probably but "should" doesn't do me much good while the guy who can make things happen meanders in front of a podium every month or so in the middle of a disaster season right after the coach got done melting down on some reporter for asking a decidedly non-spicy question just to essentially say "HYUK HYUK can you guys believe I get paid 7M dollars for this?!? Holy shit! Anyway stuff's great yadda yadda but I gotta go play bumper cars with Ferraris. Ciao!"

If I went into my annual review after 2 years of doing no successful work. I wouldn’t be asked to come back.

Surely you've had bosses with different temperaments and expectations, right? And, depending on your work history, those two years could be part of a broader picture that requires context.

If you're a third year employee and you've had two bad years, there probably isn't much you can do to change your boss's mind. You're toast.

If you're a 15-year employee with past success who had two bad years, you might be given a chance to prove you can improve results. Some boss's will shrug it off as a blip on an otherwise successful career. Some will be empathetic and perhaps give you one last chance, provided you're willing to adapt in certain ways. And some will say results are all that matter and you're done.

Regardless, I don't think an end of the year conversation to assess the future is all that outlandish.

I can already see it.

Sullivan: "B..b..but JAKEY got a boo boo and mean ol Geno sabotaged the season! And... and... I didn't get the toys I wanted... no.,.. NEEDED, either!"
Dubas: "It's alright, son. I know. Now come over here and sit down by the fire I've started with 1.5M dollars in cash I had laying around and let's talk about... your NEW EXTENSION!"
Sullivan: "YAYYYYYYYYY!"

Then they read "Goodnight Moon" together as Dan Kingerski weeps tears of joy in the suspiciously dark corner. Something like that.

Geno should be moved for a more defensively sound 2C. Maybe like a…..Jordan Staal?

That way next year we can have Sid’s line (minus Jake) and three defensive peasant lines who don’t score. Two hasn’t been doing the trick.

I'm HR. I fire people if they have two bad weeks, dog.

Since Sully will be here long after most of us are buried , i dont get why Sid, Geno, Letang, Jake would want to stay on a team with no chance of winning. Thinking that Jake would want another crack at the playoffs with a winning team and chance for another cup, same for Sid. Does winning not matter to these guys? Would they really rather stay here and just play for nothing and no chance at the playoffs and be around AHL talented roster? Since Penguins management how shown that winning isnt important and keeping Sully around (probably make him future GM) is more important and that the players dont care so why should i or anyone else care. Its going to be another Bucco's on ICE and after Sid finally retires or falls off the cliff then the Penguins will start that decade long rebuild with horrible people in charge.
Im calling it now, Jake will be re-signed, Sid we do an extension next year to match Geno's last year and either Sid and Geno retire together or stay here till mid 40's.

Easy street, baby

Sully isn't held accountable

Neither are they

They've won Cups and more

They don't need to prove anything

Just all can sit on laurels and shovel millions into their accounts

For clarity, I'm not saying they are all lazy, sid is still super dedicated... But they don't have to try 110% every night, and i think they're fine with it

Yea I wouldn't be shocked at all if Sullivan is quite popular as a coach. The team will literally lose in the most gutless and soul destroying fashion and he'll go out and give his "I thought we.." mantras. He has won twice and is 5 years past the average coach expiration date, so he coaches to have a job and not have to move to another city - not as a challenge to get a group to win.

You’re underwhelmed? He traded for Karlsson & got rid of a bunch of lousy contracts Hextall saddled us with. Might want to adjust your expectations there a bit. There’s been exactly two trades made this calendar year.

No they’re not, but you don’t get how this works. Is a young Scotty Bowman out there to be plucked onto the bench? When Craig Patrick fired Eddie Johnston mid-season, he replaced him…with himself. It’s late Feb bro, they aren’t going to replace the coaching staff now.

Plus, if you think that getting rid of Sullivan will suddenly make the team better, then you haven’t been watching. This core is done. It doesn’t matter who is coaching.

When a few guys look shit, it's on the players. When everyone looks shit, it's on the coach.

We're done with Sid and Geno being able to will the team to 100 points no matter who they play with, yeah, but that doesn't mean we couldn't play way better and more entertaining with another coach. People thought we were done in 2014-15 with MJ coaching too, but look how that turned around. Not saying we're a real contender, but we should at least have a competent offensive team that can put away powerplay goals and look like they care most nights.
