Penguins fire Mike Johnston, Mike Sullivan named new head coach

This needs repeating over and over again:

Crosby and Malkin are the two reasons why the Pens haven't been a lotto team for a while now. They extended Bylsma and Shero's shelf life by at least 2 years if not more.

Arguing that Johnston is a good coach because of his win% is like arguing a coach that gets Canada to the semi finals in the Olympics is great, because that is good for most teams.

Apples and Oranges. Talent wise Team Canada >>>> Team Sweden (closest team)

That said, Team Canada is expected to win every year.

Are you arguing that the Penguins >>>> Blackhawks? That's the only way your comparison would make sense.

I'm not gonna bother reading through 13 pages of poop flinging, but I'm sure "coach killer" has been brought up several times, yes?

Yes, because Crosby is the only captain in the league who has had more than one coach! Bad captain!!!!!!!!!!

Stamkos has had 5 in 8 years. According to his twitter, it's gonna be 6 in 9.

Speaking of that, Crosby's thumb "slipping" would have forced HF to buy new servers after the current ones melted.

Ovechkin has had 4 coaches in the last 5 seasons, even called one of them a " fat ****".

Taking a team that finished 2nd in the conference down to 8th in your first season and being out of playoff position almost 30 games into your second season is not cause for celebration. It's grounds for dismissal.

MJ inherited a perennial conference leader and turned them into a bubble playoff team. The winning percentage over a small sample size under those circumstances is moot.

Penguins are not the only team. Look at the demise of their rival, the Flyers. Look at the Bolts this year. Look at the Ducks.

I think they should have waited to see Johnston's playoff performance this year before pulling the trigger. Always struck me as a coach who good get something done in the playoffs.

His hands were tied last year, with all those injuries. In spite of that the Rangers never won by more than a goal. I think he could have really shocked everyone. That anemic GF could have looked magical come playoff season. "Defense wins championships". Really think the Pens could have pulled it off this season.

A pattern is starting to form. I was so happy getting rid of him, didn't matter the return.

Addition by subtraction!

Yes, a pattern on being on crappy/mediocre teams with **** coaches. That's the real pattern here.

Or just keep drinking that Simmons kool aide that Kessel sucks and that the Leafs are somehow relevant again after trading him.

Does Komorov still have more goals than him?

Komorov goal totals: 10
Crosby goal totals: 6

I guess Komorov is better than Crosby too :sarcasm:

Their record reflects what the roster actually is imo but the system and MJ and Agnew's player usage was putrid. Hell, they played Dupuis on the Sid's line AFTER he had chest pains in SJ last week. Just dumb.

I don't know if they'll be better or worse with Sullivan.

I also dunno why they didn't just slap the "Interim" on this as soon as they announced it and review from Jan.1 to the off-season with no compensation coming.

Ovechkin has had 4 coaches in the last 5 seasons, even called one of them a " fat ****".

Three of those happened in quick succession as one coach lost the team (Boudreau), an interim coach with no interest in NHL coaching came in to finish the season (Hunter), and then a terrible hire was made (Oates). All of this happened under a GM who was fired 2 years later, and only one of these guys is now working in the league in the same capacity (Boudreau).

So yeah, Ovechkin's fault. :shakehead

Hilarious how defensive pens fans are about Crosby being called a coach killer after all the crap they threw at ovie for years on here. Please spare us the hypocritical act.

I don't think they were actually saying it was Ovi's fault, they were just commenting on how it was stupid to call Crosby a "coach killer" when players like Ovi are at the same amount of coaches. There is no such thing as a coach killer, contrary to what HF wants to believe. Either you're a bad coach or you have a bad team, very rarely does a single player get a coach fired.

What will Sullivan bring to penguins?

As of today the penguins relieved mike Johnston of his duties and brought in the WBS coach Mike sullivan. What will he bring to the pens? He will certainly be more vocal with the players which is what the team needs. I would expect him to break out of the "defensive" system that the penguins had before and the power play should be tinkered with. Also what line changes will he make? I would like to see the younger guys like sprong and plotnikov get more minutes and get some top 6 time instead of the usual kunitz on the top line. What do you guys think sullivan will bring?

So how awkward is it going to be when johnsonero is deemed to not be the problem after all? I can already see this new coach getting **** in when Crosby doesn't pick up his game

Of course at first they will look decent like most teams with a new coach

He's not going to be bringing in any new players, since he's not the GM.

The Pens are probably going to trade for a top-4 puck mover closer to the deadline. Who will they trade for? I have no clue.

The real clown is Rutherford. I wonder if he truly never went after an accomplished coach because it would have posed a threat to his position too.

Their management situation looks like a circus.

Less awkward than the Leafs paying Babcock all that money to coach a bottom-feeding team.
