That game is the pinnacle of the B2B teams. Lost two straight, series suddenly tied, all games close, you're thinking fatigue is setting in. Then we come out and dominate for 60 minutes, led by the captain. Hainsey's play added the explanation point.
Back to back shutouts by Murray leads to back to back cups.

10 years from now we will still be talking about those glory days living in the past drowning our sorrows with whiskey.

Agreed.

If I'm Dubas one of things I'm saying is "Hey Mike, I'm not going to tell you how to run or coach your team...but I don't want to see Jeff Carter taking opening OT faceoffs anymore. Period."

I'm also hoping that Dubas and Co will put a little more heat on Sullivan to explain himself when things aren't working. That 7-8 game losing streak we went on after winning 7-8 straight, all while watching Jake-Sid-Rust be putrid after watching Jake-Sid-Rakell be bonkers...that leaves such a large question mark as to Sullivan's willingness to identify and change. And THAT is something that is sorely needed come playoff time. He won B2B cups doing it. Today? I have extreme doubts.

That loss streak was one of the worse things I watched.

How do you not change anything losing game after game the same way.

I like Bert an awful lot - I think we should target him.

But it's problematic to assume he'll stay healthy when he's never played more than 73 games in a season, and it's unwise to assume wingers will click with Sid when he's always been notoriously particular about his linemates and none of the ones he's regularly played with have ever cracked 70...except for Guentzel.

I mean Kunitz definitely cracks 70 in 2013 if it wasn't a lockout.

Well that and then watching McGinn-Carter-Kapanen get caved in for a LONG period of time to the point where even the dopiest reporter is like "Uhhhh...Mike...bud...what exactly are you doing here?" and the answer is "well we've tried nothing and we are all out of ideas man!"

It does sound like there was a lack of comms between Hextall/Burke and the coaching staff so maaaaaaaaaaybe there's a sliver of benefit of the doubt but not nearly enough for Mike to be given a pass. Assistant coaches as well - NONE of them stood up to say anything during either of those stretches? Jesus tap dancing Christ. You f***ing muppets.

That was an interesting point that kept getting overlooked by Pred/Anti-Pens fans. After the classic "The refs and league wanted the Pens to win" there was no response to "The Preds scored zero goals in the final two games...what now?"

In 5 and 6, that was about as good as a Cup team can look.

My main hope is that Malkin can finally get some one-time passes in his wheelhouse.

10 years too late, but what are you gonna do.
I do think it’s hilarious that people are discussing bow he is going to help the power play here… within ten minutes of him getting to the facility someone was probably explaining to him that on this team, whomever has the most successful pointless power play passes wins a new luxury car at the end of the season.. or whatever goofy game they have been playing since the mid 90’s that has kept the power play half inept most seasons… lol

70 is a far lower target than it's been for most of Sid's career. 30 guys got it in '10. 17 guys got it in '15. 60 guys got it last season. If you'd given all of the PP1 time and vs Empty net time to Rakell, he'd be getting real close to 70 if not over and he wasn't even that great at 5v5.

I don't think Sid's as hard to play with as people say. Particular, yes, but hard to play with, no.

The point about Bertuzzi not being able to stay fit is very true though...
With the rest it's always "ifs" and "buts" though. Guentzel actually does it, and consistently.

Outside of '19-'20 when he missed half a season because he was tripped and went face first into the boards, he's missed only 10 games in his 5 full seasons, and he's averaged a 37 goal pace or better in each of his last 5 seasons. That has tremendous value for an injury prone, pass first team.

I mean Kunitz definitely cracks 70 in 2013 if it wasn't a lockout.
If your best argument is that one winger in Crosby's entire career would have scored 70 once if not for a lockout, it probably proves my point for me.

Orlov and Bertuzzi aren't moving the needle in the slightest on our powerplay. EK might. We lost so many damned games last year because our powerplay stank.
We lost playoff series b/c our Powerplay couldn't put the nail in the coffin so many games.

Pens Powerplay structure isnt the best as already mentioned but EK is an absolute game changer and it will be better. He can take over a Powerplay and is a wizard back there.

The IQ, the puck distribution, the shot and the skating all together and there is no way this Powerplay isn't going to be really good.

He will open up the ice like never before

I dig this post and can not believe anyone in their right mind would have thought this possible as little as six weeks ago. It is fun to actually have hope, and dare I say excitement, for the next season, versus a desire to leave the room when our PP starts. There are plenty of reasons this may not work out, but Dubas has been a miracle worker thus far, and I can't fathom real critiques are in good faith. The big 3 will likely be energized seeing the front office demonstrated commitment to the core having a chance for one more cup versus mediocrity and the "this is hard" Hextall-esque lack of imagination/competence/creativity. Can't ask for more given the chips we had on the table. Jarz, you wanted to be the man and you got a sweet deal and you are a critical piece. Don't be the reason this doesn't happen.

People were ready to absolutely hang Dubas after 2 months because we didn’t buy out Granlund and re-signed Jarry.

I don’t care for Jarry, but all moves considered, this is a fantastic off-season.
