i bet the organization would give him a job post-retirement, if he wanted to stay
Which is a great option for him.

Russia is a mess right now on multiple levels. I still think it likely that he returns home, but he has to at least be thinking aboyt the possibility of staying.

Look, I didn't need the incentive of a first round pick to root for the Rangers to lose in the first place. This just adds the potential for some nice schadenfreude if everything works out optimally!
if I'm a Rangers fan/employee, I'm sitting there going, 'there's no way this doesn't somehow end with us giving the Penguins McKenna' and it weighing on them with every loss.

I like the deal, seems like a solid return for an impending UFA. DOC is whatever. And always the (slim) chance that the Rangers totally bottom out and this pick is a franchise altering player in 2026.

Noticed in the press release "The acquisition of the conditional 2025 first-round pick gives the Penguins 29 selections over the next three NHL drafts, which includes four first-round selections and 15 picks in the first three rounds. No team has more draft picks, or selections in the first three rounds, over the next three NHL Drafts than Pittsburgh."

Dubas is certainly restocking the cupboards, if nothing else.

Pretty satisfied with this.

Was expecting Petts for a 2nd + one of the higher rated prospects (and probably a cap dump), but instead got a higher pick and lower prospect. Seems equal to me.

Hope the pick gets pushed to next year. I think there's a reasonable chance the Rangers rebound, but I don't see them going on a deep run either. So at worst, they are probably going to end up in the 20-ish range which isn't a whole lot different than what it could be this year. But there's a chance they continue to slide, too. Getting some extra lottery balls in 2026 would be dope.

The rest of this trade means nothing to me. Just trade facilitators.

I am fine with the trade......I just despise Heinen. We all know he is stapled to the top 6 and that is and will always be gross.

I would have been fine with any other throw in. What is up with these retreads.

well done on getting that 1st out of us for two ufas. pretty terrifying trade for us.

here's a quick review of what else you got.

-melvin was quietly doing well just being in the shl at his age and has some skill from the highlights i have seen. easily your best warm body return.

-heinen you know. he was not physical enough in vancouver but showed more skill and savvy than a replacement player. not shy but just couldn't handle board cycling. not bad but not good. we weren't screaming to be rid of him but nobody will mourn him. he does not help or hurt.

-desharnais is a pure dump. he came in with hype after playing well for the oilers against us in the playoffs and management implying they thought he could step up to 4d. seems like a nice guy. he has been given every chance and has been awful and was not an nhl player for us. not physical. gets dummied constantly. does not seem to know how to use his size which is his main asset. juulsen supplanted him on the depth chart and nobody has questioned that decision even though most fans don't think juulsen is good enough to be a 7/8 dman and wince when he is on the ice.

good luck with the retool/not quite a rebuild thing.

What am I supposed to be happy about? Dubas came in to keep this team competitive and now we are already setting up the roster for an even shittier year next year taking on dorks like Heinen.

It’s embarrassing. It sucks to see him throw in the towel. But, solid trade for DOC and Petts.

Completely disagree with the mindset Dubas has had here since he got here and he’s handicapped this franchise incredibly in such a short time frame it is honestly impressive.

I seriously think Sid may walk.
Utterly wrong take. What possible evidence can you cite from the past 6 years to suggest this team was on the cusp of a Cup? It’s a rapidly aging out core. They did crap like this in the late 70s/early 80s when they traded away pics for aged out players. Didn’t work then. They have to get bad to get good. That brought us 5 Cups. Tear it down.

He was scratched a decent amount in his last season with the Pens and when he did play, he only averaged 10min a night.

He's not really a Sully guy because while he does kinda suck, he's more skill than grinder.

It's not the deadline yet. We can probably get rid of one or both of these dorks
I can see Heinen moved to a team for almost nothing. Which works for me.

Heinen was thrown in to make the deal work. I’m ok with that. Overall, solid work
I pretend he's a retention spot haha in this deal. He's just average on ice. So at least hes. That
I am positive we could find a way to hit the cap floor without Danton Heinen.
I am as well.

Yea this is where his tables basically say it. Though EV defense wise it's like Desharnais is worse because if a team targets him he gets scored on. At least he's big
Just woke up to this, holy shit what a great job by Dubas. Nothing else to say about it, pulling off the Rangers 1st for Pettersson is terrific.
Yep. We got the 1st and 3rd value for DOC and Petts with no retention. Just had to take an extra contract.

Lots of complaints though
The only slight concern I have is that Heinen will be taking up a roster spot I want to see go to a young player, namely the 3rd line scorer role that Sullivan usually wants on his 3rd line. That's really about my only issue with the deal.

At the same time, if you can't beat out Danton Heinen for a spot, you're not a very good player.
I have this same concern. I can see him being flipped to a team that wants him. Future considerations?
doing some reading about Melvin... he's not nothing. He may not be something, but I think he's a little more than a throw-in. And if there's one thing I trust the Canucks with, it's drafting Swedes.

Seems like he has a good hockey IQ, is a good offensive player, just needs to work on the skating side of things. Pretty typical, I guess, but he's only 18 and he has upside.
I value him as a 3rd. I think 200 games played is a 10% chance. I have nothing wrong with another lottery ticket.

Very interesting.

I hope it goes well.

DOC is a bottom 6 guy who skates fast and plays hard. Good for 10+ goals and around 30 points.

Petts I think you guys will hate his lack of physicalality he brings when on ice. But he does take a beating at times to make the best play.
I think he's a great player that will make any pairing he is on better. He is a really good defensemen. I think he will want 6+ a year. We will see if Jim gives it to him.

Fernstrom is intriguing but judging by him not making the U20 team I also don’t think he’s increased his value much since being a 3rd rounder. Still eligible for the team next year though, and will probably be there.
