Seravalli: Buffalo may not have a choice but to trade Peterka

Fair enough, he is a RHD though(seems like Buffalo's Defense is left handed heavy)

I give far less a f*** about what side a d-man shoots from than whether any of his actual skill set complements what we already have on our blue line. The absolute best case scenario for Dobson in Buffalo is that it’s immediately obvious he’s completely redundant here (just like Byram) and does absolutely nothing to fix what’s wrong with our blue line, only he wants us to pay him $11m for that. Hard pass.

I’d rather pay Gavrikov $11M on THIS team than pay Dobson that. Would be a better use of the cap.

It to get myopic about the draft, but if Chicago was offering 3 for Peterka and Buffalo was able to keep 9, I’d go that direction.

The prices for a 1C are high. Pettersson will cost a ton, if he’s even truly available. Reportedly Vancouver offered 15 for Rossi and were turned down, and Rossi might not be a 1C.

If Buffalo can take a swing to get Misa or Frondell, do it and then work something around 9 for a trade.

So if one is left hamded and presumably plays the left side, and one of them is right handed and presumably plays the right side, wouldn't it make sense to pair them together?
No, because their play styles do not complement each other.

One of the Sabres’ biggest issues is roster construction. There is actually a decent amount of talent on the team.

Rossi is a 23 year old 60 point center that's damn close to a 1C.

At absolute WORST he's a 2C

I don't speak for all Sens fans but I'd personally still give up Batherson, Pinto, or Zub. I just don't think Staios would without seeing how free agency works out first.

There's zero chance that Chicago is like "here's pick 3 for Peterka straight up". Even in this draft, pick 3 is worth more than Peterka. So my guess is that Chicago wants something else substantial with JJP for pick 3.....and that I imagine Adams has zero interest in.
Well, in most draft years, sure. This year, what can't miss player is there at #3 that would be ready to play right away(on a team desperate for relevance NOW)? Martone and Frondell have their flaws. Desnoyer a limited ceiling.

Sabres could easily add one of their forward prospects not named Kulich or Helenius and make this deal work, but I question whether this is the draft year to do it.

Peterka for 3OA

No point in complicating it.

It's not a complication.
Blackhawks need an earlyish 1st as they're still in a rebuild.

Trading down takes you out of the Frondell/Martone/Hagens tier and puts you in the Eklund/O'Brien tier. No guarantee any of those players turns into a star but you have a better chance having your pick at #3 than you do at picking up whatever scrap remains at #9.

Misa is the consensus pick at #2.

Most of the other C's available in this draft are looked at to have ceilings as 2C's, maybe, in 2-4 years. There is no Carlsson, Fantilli, Cooley, or even Lindstrom available in this draft once you get past Misa.

I don’t really see how those are different tiers. Every single prospect in this draft after Schaffer and Misa has serious flaws. There’s absolutely 0 chance in hell you’d get Peterka + 9 for 3 without a *very* hefty add on Chicago’s side that helps Buffalo win next season.

I can't imagine many teams would prefer Pick 3 this year to Peterka.

Misa and Shaeffer are the only players in this draft with higher ceilings than JJ.

JJ is a proven first-line player who brings that to your team now and likely for the next 6 or 8 years. The 3rd pick might bring you that in three or four years.

Nolan Patrick, Elias Petterson, Cody Glass, Lias Andersson, Jessie Puljujarvi, Matthew Tkachuk, Kotkaniemi, Brady Tkachuk, Hayton, Zadina, Kappo, Dach, Turcotte — how many of those guys are better than Peterka?

Magic box thinking is a strong as ever on HF boards.

You don't think Martone and Hagens have higher ceilings?
They're both pretty elite talents in my opinion.

I dunno about serious flaws, but the upside on almost all of the players past the first two is limited. Also, since CHI is still in a rebuild, and already have a potential superstar scoring winger on their roster in Bedard, they would be better off taking a guy like Desnoyer, who could be the Toews to Bedards Kane.

Adams can't be taking draft picks, bits and pieces, for JJP. A young C like Mctavish, Rossi, or Beniers, maybe. Cirelli is a bit of a different case, but I don't think that TBL would make him available. Can't think of a young, good RHD readily available.

I guess the dream is that JJP signs long term for 7M+, Norris is finally healthy and lives up to his potential, and Sabres take Mrtka or McQueen at 9.

Yes, somewhat high ceilings, but both have flaws, and are wings. Why trade a young wing who is a proven NHL scorer for a guy who might be a NHL scorer in 2-4 years? Especially when you are a GM under pressure to make the playoffs next year?

You have complicated it.

NO.
