You're assuming that there will be a FAIR competition for that spot here in Sullyland, between Heinen and any young player.

You are aware the Penguins had Heinen in the past, correct? And we specifically saw him getting healthy scratched for like a quarter of the season and only playing 10 minutes a night?

Sullivan doesn't like Heinen, or he at least didn't like Heinen in his last season here. If Sullivan is playing Heinen over any young guy, it's really not good for the young guy because Sullivan doesn't like Heinen.

Dubas will move Heinen and the RD for picks as the cap is much higher going forward. Dubas has some vets to move but they can be moved. Hayes, Heinen and the RD will be elsewhere for low picks. For now they are roster adds to allow the young players in WB to continue developing. But lots of young players next year as Dubas begins the rebuild at the NHL level. The question is will Sullivan be here or a new coach who knows his role in coaching the young players.
Koivinen Sid Rakell
Bunting Geno ?
Rutgers M Broz Tomasino
Ponomarev Glass Acciari
lol at thinking Sullivan’s boy Rusty will be moved …he and mid-Heinen can float around together…can’t wait to watch…not

If Sullivan is playing Heinen over any young guy, it's really not good for the young guy because Sullivan doesn't like Heinen.

Sully may not have wet dreams about Danton Heinen like he does about Matt Nieto, but it's still a matter of the degree of "liking" someone. Whether Heinen is officially a Sully Pet or not, he's still likely to be better-liked than Koivunen or any other other unproven young player. That young player still starts out at a disadvantage and I'll believe the playing field is actually level when I see some proof of it.

doing some reading about Melvin... he's not nothing. He may not be something, but I think he's a little more than a throw-in. And if there's one thing I trust the Canucks with, it's drafting Swedes.

Seems like he has a good hockey IQ, is a good offensive player, just needs to work on the skating side of things. Pretty typical, I guess, but he's only 18 and he has upside.

Yeah he was ranked #6 in Vancouver's prospect pool according to Wheeler. Wheeler had the Canucks at #21 and the Penguins at #20, so he's likely around the #6 prospect in the Penguins system as well.

I see Heinen as an asset to be usedin the top 6/9 for when one of Bumting/Rakell are traded. Then next season, same roll and then easily flipped to a contender mid season allowing a youngster to take a spot.

so few of these players actually hit, so I guess collecting a bunch of them is a good idea

You have to start to wonder why Crosby, Malkin and Letang want to stay at this point.
I think it's pretty obvious why Sid wants to stay. Look at who his heroes are. Look at who housed him as a rookie/young player. He wants to be a 1-franchise guy for legacy reasons and because of his relationship with Mario.

The other two likely want to be here because he's here. And I think we all underestimate the level of comfort Geno has here.

Geno also has one year left on his deal and is probably going to retire after next season. No real point in chasing something you’ve accomplished three times in one season and making it a potentially awkward end to your legendary career.

Yeah he's basically another Pieniniemi caliber prospect, which is about what anyone reasonable could have expected for O'Connor to bring back. I thought he'd bring back a 3rd and he brought back an intriguing looking 3rd round drafted prospect.

His write-up had me thinking Koivunen vibes.

His write-up reminds me of Martin Frk. Good size offensive winger that plays with a bit of tenacity. I don't think the Koivunen comparison really matches there.

With the stated goal of "rebuilding", yes.

Eating up cap space for two dorks like Desharnais and Heinen is very upsetting next year, but I guess "if people want to bet against Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Sullivan and others, "they can do, but I'm going to bet on them" was just more politician bullshit from an absolutely detestable clown.

You realize there's probably no 1st without taking the cap hits back?

I actually don't mind bringing back Desharnais in this deal. I think he's overpaid for what he brings, but this team desperately needs some size on its defense and Desharnais is at least solid defensively.

Desharnais seems Ruhwedel if you made Ruhwedel 6'7" and physical. Not sure what there is to complain about with getting him back. I'm concerned with Heinen possibly blocking young guys at forward, but Desharnais is a fine guy to bring back to fill the 3rd pair RD role. They don't have much at RD in the system beyond Brunicke, and Brunicke is likely spending another year in the WHL next year anyway.

I thought while posting my question about Malkin and his past comments about retiring rather than playing anywhere else. And he made those when he was much younger.

Pittsburgh is the only home outside of Russia that he knows.

He likely returns to Russia after his contract ends. Although with their looming economic issues, societal issues, and living half his life here, I wonder if there is a small chance he doesn't return and stays here.

Brunicke, Koivunen, McGroaty, Pieniniemi, Murashov, Broz…he’s probably top 10?

I think Fernstrom and Pieniniemi are on the same level as prospects. Both 3rd rounders doing decently well in a men's league and internationally in their draft+1 year. Pieniniemi moved to the OHL in his draft+2 year but I think the two are on the same level.

I'd probably put them in the 8-10 range. My top-10 ranking would probably be:

1. McGroarty
2. Brunicke
3. Koivunen
4. Pickering
5. Blomqvist
6. Broz
7. Murashov
8. Ponomarev
9. Pieniniemi
10. Fernstrom

This also leaves out Howe but I'm honestly super underwhelmed with what I've seen from Howe since getting drafted.

i bet the organization would give him a job post-retirement, if he wanted to stay

I don't think it really matters if the Pens never see Fernstrom tbh. I also don't think it really matters of Desharnais sucks. Team got a 1st rounder that's probably gonna be a mid round pick or better for a guy that made no sense to re-sign and a dude who goes like 20 games between goals. /shrug

Hell, it's a good thing if Desharnais sucks. This team should be focused on being as bad as possible over the next two and a half seasons to try and set up for the least amount of post-Sid/Geno hardship as possible. I hope the team's working the phones to see if they can get anything for Rakell or Bunting as well.

Also fire Sullivan.

Dude looks like a Melvin too.

yeah I think they are a rare type that value comfort more than most pro athletes, and they are happy and comfortable here as a home, not just a hockey team. And at this point probably with each other as well. I think they'd rather that legacy as a trio than uprooting their lives to chase something else. Personally I hope we let them do it if it's what they want, even if it slows down a rebuild. I'm a romantic I guess, and I think they've earned the choice of how to end their careers here.

Maybe they can pool their money and buy the team when we fully collapse
