Maybe, maybe not. He fluctuates between bad and good.
36 points in 2023-24. +16. 17 goals.
He's turning 30 this summer. Too early for his body to fail him probably.

I'll put it this way... Heinen has a much greater chance of playing up to his contract than Acciari.

With how stripped our roster will be, I won't be surprised if he gets a fair amount of top-six time.
He's just very vanilla.

Again it's 2.25 and probably very tradable. The price on not retaining.

Could make it easier to trade Bunting @ 50% and aim for a higher pick and no player unless expiring.

Quite frankly this is a A-

Anyone hating on this trade is nuts.

You asked for my analysis. That's it. You can weight the trade how you want.

I weight it as, there could be an okay first maybe sorta. 3rds are footnotes on Wikipedia pages. And the players we got are trash.

If a first rounder on a team that might not even finish worse than us, and a third off VAN, gets you feeling jiggy, then rock on through the weekend, brother.

... Oh amazing, Fermstromming *is* the third rounder referenced lol, so we don't even get a third lol what an odd tweet that was

getting a 15th overall from NYR and if we finish like 8th overall could easily get us into the top 5 this year with how weak the class is.

I'm not sure what orchid spice I want him to be. I just know that as long as he plays up to or exceeds his contract, and commands something in a trade, that's good enough.

Bunting should definitely be traded as well, yeah.

This trade's grade will be determined by how Petts plays from here. We've seen varying levels from him over the years.
The 1st could very well turn into nothing too. But I like the swing. Petts has no purpose here anymore and we were about to lose him for nothing.

For me how he plays it is irrelevant.

For Canucks very relevant

1st + 3rd for Petts and DOC?

What can't we just be happy about that.

Vincent Desharnais is a bottom pair D. Makes 2 million. If he sucks so bad we bury him in AHL for only 700k cap hit one year.

Or straight up any team that needs a bottom vet D for future considerations next year. Teams eat that up.

Heinen - 2.25 million is definitely rough next year but again teams sign guys like this and for 1 year he can either be traded or play or be scratched. Again AHL means he's only a 925k hit.

We didn't use the 50% slot which means if we move off of Bunting we can use it.
It wasn't a first and a 3rd. It was just a first.

Yeah but if you're weighing a trade in the future, you look at how both teams profited.
This is a dice roll for the 1st, which I'm fine with for an upcoming UFA.

The 3rd is Fernstrom. He's 18. It's almost the same thing.

Caring about Heinen and Desharnais is pointless if Dubas’ goal is to suck next year.
I mean, I would have just tried to not get stuck with salary dumps if that was the case, hence the B.

My big worry is the team is still trying to thread the needle here, but that can be put to rest if the team makes more moves.

your big worry is the team is trying to thread the needle after acquiring one of the worst ds in the league and a retread?

Yeah, because who knows what other dumbass moves await us.

If I’m wrong, that’s great. We finally started a rebuild. But if we stop half way and try to “correct course” or sign some dumb high priced UFA (or god forbid bring back Pettersson) then we’re no better off than we were before. I love being wrong, it would be nice to be wrong more often.

Like I said, as an isolated move, I like the trade. But I’ve seen this team do a lot of dumb shit over the years, so I’m waiting to see what else we do.

Some of Vancouver is under the impression that MP is Matias Ekholm lite. Interesting. I hope for their sakes he starts having a better season then.

He'll slot in nicely on their 2nd pairing. Their defense got better today so good for them.

If I'm Dubas, I probably send an email to all 31 teams and tell them that both Heinen and Desharnais could be had for a song.

Vinny
Scouting report on Desharnais for those interested:

Massive body, takes up a lot of space in front of his net but that's about all he does on the positive side. Best you can hope for him is he keeps his game simple and just doesn't do anything dumb, AKA your typical 7/8 D-man.

Whatever potential the Canucks thought they saw in him likely isn't there. I would be surprised if he ever becomes a good bottom pairing D-man. Just does not have NHL level skating, IQ or puck skills.

Also not really a physical presence despite his size.
not entirely true

Vinny can be effective player if you have the right partner and use him correctly which the Canucks did neither. When he played with Brett Kulak on our 3rd pair they were one of the best third pairs in the NHL. They were able to take on tough competition and come out ahead.

He is useless with the puck and not good at defending the rush at all. That being said in the D zone he is very good at taking up space and defending the red zone around the net. When the oilers had him he played on our top PK unit as well which was one of the best in the league. In the playoffs it was actually the best ever in the history of the game albeit it stayed strong when he was out of the lineup as well.

Pair him with a smart, mobile partner and use him as a D zone start/PK specialist and he can be an effective #6. That’s why the Canucks gave him the contract they did but they didn’t realise they did not have the personnel to use him properly. Maybe the pens don’t either I don’t know enough about the bottom half of your D just giving my assessment as a guy who watched him for years going back to the AHL.

That's fine if he sucks. The Pens don't need him to be an effective player. They need to draft Gavin McKenna.

He's an absolutely shitty 3rd round pick that likely will never come over, he's barely good enough to be mediocre in Sweden.

Yep 2024 3rd.
That at this point is playing like he would be a 7th.

Pretty meh. Could be better, could be worse. I look forward to the Graves-Desharnais pairing. Heinen takes Beauvillier's spot next week and you give him away at the deadline for whatever you can get.

I haven't read much in any scouting report that should create any buzz

It's a buy VERY low toss in on the trade cause JR has to overpay in some way

When teams give up on you within a year of a draft.. Yeah...
Jim Rutherford has no idea who Melvin is nor does he care. I wouldn't call his inclusion a sign Vancouver gave up on him at all.

The kid has skill, but he has significant question marks. Not much different than most 18 year olds third round picks. Acting like he's a bust already is just carving out your own narrative. He may never play in the NHL, but he deserves time to at least prove that himself instead of being written off now.
