Jim Rutherford has no idea who Melvin is nor does he care. I wouldn't call his inclusion a sign Vancouver gave up on him at all.

The kid has skill, but he has significant question marks. Not much different than most 18 year olds third round picks. Acting like he's a bust already is just carving out your own narrative. He may never play in the NHL, but he deserves time to at least prove that himself instead of being written off now.

Agreed. Look at the guys drafted around him, pretty much all of them are at a similar level of production. Sure, if we'd gotten a 3rd in 2025 we could have drafted the next Jake Guentzel or Bryan Rust but odds are more likely we'd draft the next Connor Hall or Ben Hanowski.

I love how people just ignore that Allvin is the GM altogether
It rules because it’s two clubs run by the PoHO.

I don’t care if he doesn’t make it, but for once it’s nice we got a guy that is unequivocally a scorer and not some dorky “two way player” with extremely mediocre stats.

Vinny

not entirely true

Vinny can be effective player if you have the right partner and use him correctly which the Canucks did neither. When he played with Brett Kulak on our 3rd pair they were one of the best third pairs in the NHL. They were able to take on tough competition and come out ahead.

He is useless with the puck and not good at defending the rush at all. That being said in the D zone he is very good at taking up space and defending the red zone around the net. When the oilers had him he played on our top PK unit as well which was one of the best in the league. In the playoffs it was actually the best ever in the history of the game albeit it stayed strong when he was out of the lineup as well.

Pair him with a smart, mobile partner and use him as a D zone start/PK specialist and he can be an effective #6. That’s why the Canucks gave him the contract they did but they didn’t realise they did not have the personnel to use him properly. Maybe the pens don’t either I don’t know enough about the bottom half of your D just giving my assessment as a guy who watched him for years going back to the AHL.
A lot of teams don't have a #5 that can carry a limited #6 and he's a player that other teams will definitely try to exploit 5on5 especially in the playoffs.

You're right he's good at protecting the front of the net but at the same time he gets torched any time the other team's forwards work the high slot because he's so uncomfortable skating away from the net area to cover opposing players.

I think there's a good reason why he was healthy scratched as the Oilers got deeper into the playoffs.

This scouting report seems like he's a shooter rather than a safe bottom 6er. Plus he is called Melvin which is a great name for an 18 year old.

For context these are the Swedish forwards picked before him:

Lucas Petterson (35th overall, Ducks) - 1A in 23GP for Modo (SHL), 15 points in 19 games for Östersunds IK (Allsvenkan)

Jack Berglund (51st overall, Flyers) - 1G 2A in 17GP for Färjestad BK (SHL)

Linus Eriksson (58th overall, Panthers) - 0P in 5GP for Timrå IK (SHL), 1G 3A in 18GP for Djurgårdens IF (Allsvenkan)

Herman Traff (91st overall, Devils) - 3G 4A in 21GP for HV71 (SHL)

So Traff is the only one with a similar level of production.

He's 18 playing against men.
Do this thing called research. I happen to live in the city that held this prospects rights. I might know a little more just reading about the local shit.

He's a throw in prospect that has no value other than saying they got a prospect in a deal. Kirill Tankov has a higher chance at making the NHL.

The hockey writers are a bunch of dumb f***s. Don't use hockey writers for anything. They're literal f***ing idiots.

Yeah 3rd rounders are shitty in general, so that's par for the course.
Generally sure, but he wasn't a good one. Allvin had a big miss in that pick and they knew it, it's why he was expendable. He's not a prospect that is doing any of the improvement you want him to do with the issues in his game. He was taken higher than he should have been, he was more like a 5th rounder in a not so strong draft.

He would need to have the most magical turn around of any prospect in the history of the game to make the NHL.

How does one make a big miss with a late 3rd rounder? What makes him need the most magical turn around of any proospect in the history of the game to make the NHL?

Also a great name.

I happen to live an hour away from where he actually plays and watch SHL every round. Is my dick bigger?
How does Mellll viiiiin look in the games you’ve seen?

I think you do the same development with Big Melv as the Canes did with Koivunen. At least one more season in the SHL, but probably two and then bring him over to Wilkes-Barre to burn down AHL villages.

I don't think it really matters if the Pens never see Fernstrom tbh. I also don't think it really matters of Desharnais sucks. Team got a 1st rounder that's probably gonna be a mid round pick or better for a guy that made no sense to re-sign and a dude who goes like 20 games between goals. /shrug

Hell, it's a good thing if Desharnais sucks. This team should be focused on being as bad as possible over the next two and a half seasons to try and set up for the least amount of post-Sid/Geno hardship as possible. I hope the team's working the phones to see if they can get anything for Rakell or Bunting as well.

Also fire Sullivan.

Hard not to like this.

I hope NY finishes 13 and bottoms out next year in a Carolina Panthers type situation. Would be hilarious.

I really like this trade. While the 1st will probably be around 20th, there's the possibility that it could be higher. Perhaps even really high in 2026, which brings me so much joy.
I'm not overly enthused about taking on cap for next season, but Desharnais as a gigantic RD will bring back at least a 7th at next year's trade deadline. Heinen I doubt, but maybe next year will be good Heinen and he'll bring an asset back as well?

Caring about Heinen and Desharnais is pointless if Dubas’ goal is to suck next year.
You can hope that the team as a whole sucks next year, but that Heinen and Desharnais (as well as any other pending UFAs) do well.

He's been alright. He's getting limited ice time in a struggling team, but it's his first real season in the pros, not counting the cup of coffee he had last season, so it's not surprising at all, more of a standard procedure unless you're an amazing talent (which I assume no one here is thinking he is). It's probably the closest SHL season in history, so coaches naturally gravitate towards the veterans because experienceeeeeeeeeee. Linus Pettersson, the second rounder from Anaheim, can't even crack the lineup of one of the worst teams in the league, where he probably would have done more than Tyler Benson, remember him?, who has a whopping 0 points in 20 games. But I digress

His team Örebro has a bit of a weird mix in their forward lineup, like they don't really know what they want, but that could mean he'll get more ice time with better players next season. As for so many swedish players, the second and third season in the pros is where they really take the big steps.

I may hate Dubas, but at least he isn't a completely ego driven f***ing moron like JR..

“We had to give up something to get him, but Marcus is one heck of a defenseman,” Rutherford said. “I traded for him when I was in Pittsburgh, and I’m very happy with how that one turned out. I traded Daniel Sprong for him, and I can still remember people saying, ‘How on earth can you trade Daniel Sprong for this guy?’ Well, I’m pretty darn happy with how that worked out. How good did that trade work out? And here we are again. We need an upgrade, and he’s going to give us that. I know that he will.”

Jesus christ.
this isn’t a quote from the President?

Re: bitching that Heinen and the tall dude are useless and that Sully can’t coach.

We’re rebuilding. We WANT to lose. This is the Penguins way. Sully + those two help in that regard.

We’ve suffered through Sully’s obstinance when we wanted to win; we might as well savor it when we want to lose.

I'd prefer Sullivan be fired about 5 years ago, and don't want him influencing the potential top 5 pick the team's gonna have in June. But yeah, losing is the goal now. Particularly for the 2026 and 2027 drafts.

Just hope he's gone and not coaching any potential building block prospects. I think it'd genuinely kill my desire to watch entirely if he tried to turn McKenna into Bryan Rust.
