Vincent Desharnais is a bottom pair D. Makes 2 million. If he sucks so bad we bury him in AHL for only 700k cap hit one year.

Or straight up any team that needs a bottom vet D for future considerations next year. Teams eat that up.

Heinen - 2.25 million is definitely rough next year but again teams sign guys like this and for 1 year he can either be traded or play or be scratched. Again AHL means he's only a 925k hit.

We didn't use the 50% slot which means if we move off of Bunting we can use it.

If I’m wrong, that’s great. We finally started a rebuild. But if we stop half way and try to “correct course” or sign some dumb high priced UFA (or god forbid bring back Pettersson) then we’re no better off than we were before. I love being wrong, it would be nice to be wrong more often.

Like I said, as an isolated move, I like the trade. But I’ve seen this team do a lot of dumb shit over the years, so I’m waiting to see what else we do.

Scouting report on Desharnais for those interested:

Massive body, takes up a lot of space in front of his net but that's about all he does on the positive side. Best you can hope for him is he keeps his game simple and just doesn't do anything dumb, AKA your typical 7/8 D-man.

Whatever potential the Canucks thought they saw in him likely isn't there. I would be surprised if he ever becomes a good bottom pairing D-man. Just does not have NHL level skating, IQ or puck skills.

Also not really a physical presence despite his size.

He is useless with the puck and not good at defending the rush at all. That being said in the D zone he is very good at taking up space and defending the red zone around the net. When the oilers had him he played on our top PK unit as well which was one of the best in the league. In the playoffs it was actually the best ever in the history of the game albeit it stayed strong when he was out of the lineup as well.

Pair him with a smart, mobile partner and use him as a D zone start/PK specialist and he can be an effective #6. That’s why the Canucks gave him the contract they did but they didn’t realise they did not have the personnel to use him properly. Maybe the pens don’t either I don’t know enough about the bottom half of your D just giving my assessment as a guy who watched him for years going back to the AHL.
