So your saying there is little difference between a Vezina guy with a .935 save % and a backup? I'm not talking about 1 game either. Tell that to the Rangers this year. If it was that easy to find good goaltending there wouldn't be teams in this league that have been looking for it for a decade. A goaltender is probably the most important player on a team and having one is almost a prerequisite to hoist the cup.
That is absolutely what I am saying, yes.

The Penguins won two Cups with a guy who was a rookie both times he won it and then could barely stay in the league.

It's just so frustrating....... we all know how good this team is on paper, how lethal they can be, much more than the dying Pittsburgh team we're facing at the moment. But the lack of experience in these tight pressure situations will always favor them over us.

and It's just heartbreaking to have to go through. Also really sucks thinking about how more rounded out we'd be with Motte and Blais, f*** do I miss both of them. I really hope we can bounce back because this young group deserves it

Next game we get to see what Shesty is made of. The GOAT goalies put up their best performances after their worst.

I watched the game. The team is many things but certainly not soft.
Im sorry, but I disagree. This team is soft. I do credit them for coming back to tie it. They're a good comeback team, but I just don't like the finesse style of this team. They don't go to the net hard enough. They don't play the walls tough enough. They don't shoot hard consistently enough.

All that effort to come back and tie it…just to come out with that effort in the 3rd?

“Captain” Kreider’s line has done jack shit to get this team going. All momentum comes from Artemi’s line and the kid line. Can’t have some of your best players half assing it. Not good enough.

Well they won convincingly in Game 2, so no need to make a change on defense. Power play didn’t give up a goal against, so it’s a wash, and Zibanejad isn’t the reason they lost.

Backup goalie with softie problem lets in a softie at the worst possible time. That’s your ballgame.
It was a poor goal but the Rangers had a lot of chances to put it away too. AG was good enough. Until the very end. I certainly wouldn’t blame him for the loss. Veteran Pens team bent but didn’t break. Rangers fought back but couldn’t find the dagger. On to the next one.

Shesterkin was due for a clunker, but it came at a bad time. The top 6 forwards need to get their heads out of their asses. The defence has been brutal. They can't beat an AHL goalie. When they lose this series, they'll look back at games 1 and 3 and say that's the opportunities they blew. They can't finish.
He didn’t have a clunker. 3/4 of those goals were insanely, ridiculously lucky.

Kreider, I could see the argument for.

Mika is holding back who, exactly? There's not a plus center in our entire system.
Yeah and what even happens if we don't extend strome? We kind of have nothing at all. That isn't aborting the rebuild, that's us not doing it too good.

Nemeth and that third pairing was horrendous. If Lindgren is back you can't play Nemeth. Can't even play him if Lindgren is still out next game.

And also, like, we have the pieces.

We need Lafreniere and Kakko to pan out.

We do not need to continue collecting prospects.

Extract some positives. They entered this series with two goalies, four defensemen, and five forwards with no real playoff experience but could very easily be up 2-1 or even 3-0. Penguins have way more riding on the line (reputations, jobs, final contracts, etc), and they’re playing with more desperation.

If the Rangers lose, it’s awww man, try again next year with 3/4 of the lineup returning. Pens are due for major changes and know their grip on the conference has been slipping away for five years. Bottom-five farm system that entire time.

Not saying all that should ease the pain from tonight, just puts things in perspective.

We had the best goalie for years and won squat. It's important to have one that's serviceable (AKA not Georgiev). But many teams have won the cup or cups with just above average goaltending. Don't get me wrong, I love Shesty. But we've seen this movie of great goalies winning nothing here before.

Plus he couldn't see shit. Pens just parked in front whenever they wanted those first few minutes.
