Why is he allowed to go to the AHL in his draft+2 season (that's his 19 year old season, right?) but guys like McTavish can't?
Because his birthday is before December 31st

For an NHL draft prospect to leave the QMJHL, WHL or OHL to play minor-league hockey, he must be 20 years old (by Dec. 31 of that season) or have played four seasons in juniors.

It is the dumbest f***ing rule and I really think it hurts the players more then it helps the OHL. Take McTavish for example. The rule keeps him from going to the AHL but that isnt keeping him in the OHL. He is just artificially rushed.

He's a late 2003 birthdate.

It’s based off your birth year, not your draft year.

Because his birthday is before December 31st

Ah OK, thanks. I always thought it was based on draft year or age at the start of the season. They really need to come up with a change for guys that have nothing to gain from juniors but aren't ready for the NHL. Gulls could be loaded next year, though.

Thank you so very much! I was trying to look for that cutoff date yesterday or the day before.

And Holy spaceballs! That 2023-24 class going to the AHL could include Mintyukov?! Provided the NCAA guys sign, we're going to get five defensemen to the AHL!

LD LaCombe (2019)
LD Thrun (2019)
LD Zellweger (2021)
LD Hinds (2021)
LD Mintyukov (2022)

As for the the CHL-NHL agreement, I'm okay with it. There are not a lot of McTavish types that warrant bypassing the CHL altogether. The CHL doesn't want NHL teams to stash several prospects in the AHL. A possibility of that happening is very likely. Also, the CHL is also competing with the NCAA.

The NBA used to allow 18-year olds to be drafted. Many teams went after the 18 year olds and many just did not cut it when drafted. You get your LeBrons and Kobes, but not much else that I remember. Then the NBA changed it to be 19 years old. That extra year of physical development actually makes a huge difference. I still remember an 18-year old PG who was 6'7 that blew his knee out just landing down in a game.

Why change the rule for a very small percentage of prospects? There are 224 prospects drafted in McTavish's draft year. There's probably just a handful that might benefit by going to the AHL. Let's say if there are five prospects who could benefit from the rule change. Those five would represent 2.2% of the draft class.

1 year dominating OHL
1 year AHL/NHL
Full time

I fully expect that if his development goes well has the potential to be something like a super lite version of Josi, which would be amazing. Sergachev is a comparable but probably a low offensive ceiling.
I think Mintykov's floor is Sergachev(32 to 40 points per year) & his ceiling is better than that.

Was SJ targeting Mintykov in the draft because i'm not sure its Buffalo taking Savoie that made them trade the pick.
Mintykov is even a better fit for them than Savoie. I think if they were picking a Forward it was Gauthier or Kasper as those have size + speed + skill.
They also need LD prospect like Mintykov. So perhaps they were waiting to see what would be there at #11 and Mintykov was the last guy on their list.

Eklund, Savoie & Bordeleau as ur top3 centers is just too many small and soft centers.
They probably really wanted Kasper or Gauthier but also a Dman like Mintykov or Korchinski.

I think that's maybe taking it to far. I really like Minty but his floor isn't Sergachev
Then what is his floor, 10 to 15 points ?
Jacob Larsson played at a 15 point pace in 2019-20 season when he had 11 points in 60 games on a terrible Ducks team.

I also think Sergachev is overrated because he plays on Tampa, passing the puck to Kucherov has a great chance of turning into a point, just how stacked their lines it's gonna really boost his numbers whichever line is out there.

Even some of Makars points it helps that he has an elite team to pass the puck to or receive passes from as he does score alot of goals.

I've been watching a lot of scouting videos and reading scouting reports. While we're all enamored with is offense, there's a consensus that he needs to work on his defense. The scouts are saying Minty isn't being well coached. Another year of the CHL will help Minty be more accustomed to the small ice and offensive instincts, but I dunno if his defense will be addressed enough.

He'll be a one-and-done for the CHL and make his way to the AHL. In the AHL, I think he could be there for a season and a half or two seasons just so he can work on his defensive game. We've already seen what happens when we bring up an offensive prospect to the AHL too soon in Drysdale. Verbeek did say he wants his prospects over-ripened than underdeveloped.

What I did find particularly funny is that quite a few scouts sharing that they sometimes wonder if MInty is a forward or a defensemen while watching him. He's the prefect defenseman for Eakins' pinching D scheme.
