I think if you guys didn't take him, then we would've taken him right after and we wouldn't have traded away the 11th pick. His highlights on offense are nuts. So explosive and creative.
I strongly think so too, with how the draft unfolded #1 to #9 i think Mintyukov was who the Sharks were hoping to be there at #11 before they make the trade after all 4 of Mintyukov, Gauthier, Korchinski and Kasper were gone.

SJ was a perfect fit for Mintyukov or Korchinksi.
Perfect scenario for the Sharks was that Chicago doesn't trade into top10 and one of Korchinski or Mintyukov is there at #11. Suddenly TSN McKenzie stopped spoiling picks not long after that trade because it messed the order up and he has no idea what the teams 2nd option would be.

Very interesting, I wonder if the Ducks will actually keep Minty with the NHL roster since it's devoid of d-men right now.

I hope not. He still needs to learn how to play better defense. We can find plugs so that Minty can continue to develop not only his defensive game, but also his body for at least another year. Our blue line consists of a lot of soft OFDs/transition D's and Benoit.

RD Andersson could win an NHL roster spot at training camp. Big RD Helleson could also win one. But we're missing physical D-men to partner with Fowler and Drysdale.

I agree that he shouldn't play in the NHL. He might do a 9 game stint then sent back to juniors like they did with MacTavish.

If we do that, then it says we didn't add any defensemen of note this off-season. That would be a huge disappointment to not acquire plugs better than Minty.

You guys want Vlasic? :naughty: Or better yet, Karlsson? He could be a great teacher for the young guys.
Only with great, great, great incentives that are not worth discussing even. The thing is, we need defencemen with size that has 1-2, or max 3-year term left. Because our pipeline might not have Makar's or Karlssson's on there, but we have a lot of potential top-4 defencemen coming up, and taking on long contracts will ruin a lot of things that Pat Verbeek has said he stands for. We have Fowler locked down with an immovable contract (but he is good, no reason to move him), we have Drysdale, Zellweger, Hinds, and added Helleson, and just drafted 3 defencemen in the first 2 rounds. And we want to sign Thrun and Lacombe this upcoming season (we have to show they can have a role in our club in the near future). I probably forgot someone even

As a mentor, Shattenkirk has been great for that, despite all the faults he sometimes brings on the ice.

Ryan Merkley. That way you guys have a monopoly on all of these offensive dmen.

But really, Vlasic and Karlsson are unmovable really.
Yeah. An alternative could be if someone else gives you a bad contract, a la Lucic/Neal but not sure if there is something out there.

I was just listening to a pre-draft podcast while typing a report at work and they were saying Minty could play in the AHL this season because he's from overseas..... I'm pretty sure that's not true?

The podcast compared him to John Carlsson

Not necessarily directed at you, but is he AHL ready if it were true, or is he better served with a year in juniors? There would definitely be a place on the Gulls roster for him.

I'd send him to juniors but I haven't seen him at camp like the Ducks management has. I didn't see him at all other than clips so I can't say one way or another.

I think he could likely play well enough in the AHL, just speculation here but it could be beneficial considering the criticism that has been directed at Saginaws defensive system. And if he were to struggle at the AHL level he could just be sent back down to the OHL.

This is all IF he can ply in the AHL

He cannot play in AHL because he was drafted out of the OHL. If he was drafted in the first round out Europe, depending on their league agreements with the NHL, he would be able to play in AHL immediately and have his contract slide if he did not play in the NHL. Example is Liljegren in AHL Toronto had first two years of contract slide. But...Mintyukov was in Saginaw so not the same.

Keep sending players to the AHL when they are ready. You guys said that about Zegras and Drysdale. Look at how they turned out.

You send this kid and Mctavish to the NHL NOW. Its like keeping kobe in the G League

Zegras didn’t play full time in the NHL until his D+3 season and Drysdale was barely keeping his head above water last season.

Zegras spent a full year in college, and then half of his D+2 in the WJC/AHL. He wasn't a fulltime NHLer until his D+3.

Drysdale isn't exactly a great example for rushing a guy considering he was average at best in his first full year in the NHL.

Why rush Minty (make it a thing) when there is no reason to. He will probably get traded to a contender in the OHL where he can shine and really develop. It is so hard for defensemen to make the jump straight to the NHL and be successful longterm.

Fox (3 years), Heiskanen (1 year), Makar (2 years), none of them came straight to the NHL. Why should Minty?

Mintyukov seems very mature and intelligent like how Hampus Lindholm seemed.
That said i see Minyukov becoming much more of an offensive Dman than Lindholm but i also see him becoming solid defensively.
