If we were set on a defenseman (OFD) at #10, then Minty would be my first choice. Looking long term, Minty could be Fowler's replacement in four years. 2 years in CHL and 2 years in the AHL, that's if we let him develop. I'd like to see him improve on defense, but that probably won't happen until he reaches the AHL level.

===
Russian forward Galimov was drafted in the fifth round of the 2020 draft.

===
Minty played on NA ice, which makes him easier to evaluate as well as project to sign without too much problem. I'm glad Minty did decide to come across the other pond to lay on NA ice.

I lean towards Verbeek doing that based on what Yzerman did in Detroit with Seider and Edvinsson.

I think Vaks will be more useful than Helleson. I hope we can sign Thrun and LaCombe.
I forget, can Vaks play his offside ? At least one of Thrun or LaCombe would be nice, both would be even better.

2023-24 is gonna be a huge influx of defensive talent if the NCAA guys sign! Going to the AHL would be LaCombe, Thrun, Zellweger, and Hinds. There could also be an odd chance that Moore signs as well as he'll be in his 3rd season from being drafted, but only considered a sophomore at Harvard.

I think a lot of people are sleeping on Hinds. He's a DFD who has found a scoring touch. In his draft year, he lead the QMJHL in hits and puck battles.

Youth movement on the blue line:

RD Drysdale (2020, rd 1)
LD Vaaks (2017, rd 1)
RD Andersson (2018, rd 2)
RD Helleson (2019, rd 2)
LD/RD LaCombe (2019, rd 2)
LD Thrun (2019, rd 4)
LD/RD Zellweger (2021, rd 2)
LD Hinds (2021, rd 3)
RD Moore (2020, rd 3)
LD Mintyukov (2022, rd 1)

I expect to draft another D in round 2 tomorrow. Notable DFD's left are RD Chesley and RD Warren. Two-way D is LD Odelius. OFD's left are LD Hutson, RD Havelid, RD Casey, and RD Kyrou.

The Athletic have their "Top 20 remaining Skaters" list. Hutson is 1st on the list, followed by Havelid 2nd, and Chelsey 4th.

Verbeek really emphasized his offensive toolbox in his interview. With Drysdale being a little bit more of a two-way guy, it's nice knowing we also have a more aggressive kid in the wings. I think he'll end up being competent defensively as well, but sounds like that's the part of his game that needs to be cleaned up. At the end of the day, sounds like he thinks the game at a very high level, which for dmen especially really seems to translate into offensive production.

What should make us all even more excited is bringing in this specific type of talent to play in tandem with Zegras. I know it’s been mentioned a few times but with this type of creativity working together we have the potential to be on some Harlem globetrotter highlights every night. Exciting times.

He was not the player I wanted Ducks to pick but more I learn about this kid more I think he was the right choice. Smooth skating skilled offensive defenceman sounds good to me.

Since he can not play in the WJC, it's a bit tricky to see his true potential. Saginaw was a really bad team, and nice to see that Minty as a D led that team in scoring. His -14 also was above average on the team, lol.

But he is also November birthday, seems to be somewhat close to developed physically with 190lbs+

So I'm wondering if he could even get a short stint with us to start a season.

Always appreciate reading your work. If I may ask, can you speak to the likelihood of Saginaw being a better team for the upcoming season? Or do they possibly end up shopping Mintyukov to a contending team? Obviously a more tricky trade equation to pull off given his import status...

They should be better. Hell, no one expected them to be this bad last year. Injuries played a huge role in that. They lost Tristan Lennox for a large chunk of the year. On many nights they played with four defenders or switched a forward back to play defense. On other nights they had 9-10 forwards. Just rotten luck. I would expect Saginaw to be in that 4-7 range in the Conference next year. If not, I would suspect that they definitely shop Mintyukov. But trading Imports doesn't generally net you a ton because the market is so shallow for them.

Pretty excited the more I read about Mintyukov, has the sort of offensive game that can't be taught and has good size on him so he has it easier to become halfway decent defensively compared to some of the other offensive defencemen in the draft.

This was my first choice if we took a D, very happy with the pick. Can't help but wonder if this is a signal that management feels that LaCombe and Thrun aren't going to sign. Thinking of Drysdale, Zellweger, and Mintyukov running future PP's sounds fun.

There's a lot to like in the descriptions of this player but the repeated Brandon Montour comparisons are kind of a brake on that.
He has a lot better puck skills than Montour did but there are some similarities.

Mixed feelings... I really wanted Kasper here. I do like the fact that we are now open to drafting Russians which is refreshing. Minty does look like he is the most well rounded offensive dman in this draft, but he is also older and more physically developed.

Kasper was gone though.
