The skating/hands combination this guy has is rare for a defender. Some of those plays look like they would come from a top forward in the draft. A couple more quotes from the Black Book:

“He’s a bigger, more tenacious, more talented Brendan Montour.” - HP Scout, Brad Allen, June 2022

“You want to know how good Mintyukov was this past season for Saginaw? When he was on the ice, you wouldn’t know they were a bad team.” - HP Scout, Brad Allen, June 2022

“He’s looked a lot more like the best player in Ontario tonight than Shane Wright has, that’s for sure. It’s not even close.”- NHL Scout, November 2021

“In some ways he reminds me of Shea Theodore.” NHL Scout, December 2021

"Pavel plays aggressive and overstepped his positioning occasionally. Yet, we felt that his structure became more sound as the season progressed, as he adapted to the overall pace of the OHL. When he is playing with structure, he’s right there with Alexander Pelevin, Lian Bichsel and Ryan Chesley, in terms of his ability to defend. Like them, he also is very difficult to play against, bringing a multi-faceted defensive game. We left Nemec off that list purposely, since he’s not as consistently tenacious as the above defenseman. It’s an area that Mintyukov has Nemec beat in."

I love the pick...as you know he was #2 for me. So happy that Korchinski was taken at 7 even though I suspect Mintyukov was the Ducks pick all along. Minty has a much higher ceiling in my mind and a higher floor as well.

Adam Kimelman - NHL.com - June 29th: "He's an outstanding skater with high-end offensive instincts. There's a bit of risk/reward to his game, similar to San Jose defenseman Erik Karlsson in his prime, but Mintyukov's skating allows him to make up for any mistakes."

Mike - Morreale - June 29th: "Mintyukov (6-1, 194) is a creative, puck-moving defenseman with a high hockey IQ and is a strong skater. He's capable of creating a seamless transition and pushing the pace into the opposing end."

Peter Harling - NHL Rumors - June 27th: "He has a big upside with his size, skating, and offensive abilities. Still a raw package, he needs some development to put it all together and shore up his defensive game."

Jeff Svoboda - NHL.com - June 27: "Offense stands out for the left-shot blueliner, as his high goal and assist totals show he has the ability to put the puck in the net and also distribute. Mintyukov is known as an aggressive player who isn't afraid to join the rush and make a play."

Hadi Kalakeche - Dobber Prospects - June 18th: "Despite his offensive aggressiveness, he is almost always the first player back when things go south and the puck ends up on the opponent’s stick. His defensive stick is solid, closing gaps with the same aggressiveness that sees him end up behind the opponent’s goalie offensively."

Scott Wheeler - The Athletic - June 6th: "Mintyukov is an adept three-zone player whose game tilts towards offensive through his eagerness to engage in transition and off the offensive zone blue line. When he’s looking to be active, he can involve himself in all areas of the game."

Corey Pronman - The Athletic - May 31: "He plays with pace and is aggressive as a rusher. His skating allows him to evade pressure easily and transition pucks up ice with his feet. Mintyukov is also highly skilled and can make plays through legs and sticks."

His upperbody at the end of the video looked pretty weak; definitely needs to hit the gym like Verbeek said our kids need to lol

If he fills out he does play similarly to Sergachev.

Literally led his team in scoring as a rookie defensemen. Had 11 more assists than anyone on the entire team, I hope he is on a better team next year he could explode number wise.

Always appreciate reading your work. If I may ask, can you speak to the likelihood of Saginaw being a better team for the upcoming season? Or do they possibly end up shopping Mintyukov to a contending team? Obviously a more tricky trade equation to pull off given his import status...

At the NHL Combine, when he was asked to describe his game when he’s playing his best, he answered with the kind of confidence some NHL teams would undoubtedly be all in on: “I can do everything I want.”

Source? After reading Madden's recent comments about Zegras' interviews, it wouldn't be surprising that they loved that type of mentality.
