Agreed, that would be a much bigger factor imo. Apparently there is some connection between Wolf’s dad and Johnson’s mentor or something though
I do think Wolf has respect, I was being a dolt. Johnson has some sort of connection to the GM of the Giants, but they don't have a QB. I like Maye better than Caleb Williams, but you have to wonder if the skill guys the Bears have make it more enticing plus the competition vs the Lions

Agreed, but it's so obvious to everyone and anyone he had to take it if he wants to maintain a shred of credibility.
Absolutely. On the other hand, whether you are a Kraft fan or not, its extremely funny trying to imagine Jeremy Jacobs saying the things Kraft said today — or anything of the sort.

I want an offensively minded HC that can work with Maye for years to come.

I’m sick of the yearly hiring and firing of OCs. I don’t think this continued path is a good one to develop a young QB like Maye.

I would be ok with Mcdaniels as OC if Vrabel were HC maybe since he probably can’t find a HC job.

Titans pass game under Vrabel was non-existent and I don’t trust him to find an OC.

Overall Maye is our best player. I want to build around him and the best way to do that is get a HC with him that can stick with him long term if all goes well.

Vrabel got fired from his last job for sinking the ship just as fast as they grew it. His inability to work with the GM got him fired. He also interviews with the Carolina panthers and Atlanta falcons last year and neither were impressed enough to hire him. I think there’s a reason for that.

Are you an air it out offense first fan?

Personally, as with the Bruins, I prefer defense first. Even if that means running the ball for a yard or two while keeping the other team off the board.

I like passing as much as the next fellow.

What's your preference? If anyone else wants to weigh in, please.

Mr.Howe the Lions run every part of their offense off of the outside zone run and play action.

The biggest gripe people have towards Wolf is the offensive line, and yeah the construction of that was pretty pitiful and indefensible. Now Andrews going down hurt big time, as did Strange taking forever to return…but their big vet signing was a guy who put up the worst game I’ve ever seen, was pulled after a few drives, and then quit football. They needed to add at least a Jonah Williams or something in FA and didn’t. Hopefully they learned their lesson

The draft after Maye was even worse!

I think the bears are definitely more ready to win than the Patriots are

What if Ben Johnson doesn’t have “it”? Fire another coach after a season? Risky. Although I think he’d be the better play here I don’t see how they don’t go Vrabel.

Vrabel with McDaniels seems safe. Maye needs some consistency with a coaching staff.

The Texans fired Lovie Smith and David Culley both after one season but it's an embarrassing way to run a franchise. I really hope we're not in this same position again next year.

The thing that gets me is Vrabel was available last year. The fact Mayo was even named coach in waiting is so preposterous that I am terrified of the Krafts now.

Has there been any reporting on how long Mayo's contract was for? He had to have been one of lowest paid HCs in league.

I haven’t read anything regarding his salary. But I do recall reading somewhere that the clause in his previous contract was a 10 million dollar buyout IF he wasn’t named head coach once Bill was gone.

I’m losing confidence in Kraft. Have been for years now.

Hindsight is obviously 20/20, but Mayo had like three or four interviews for Head Coach jobs around the league before the Krafts put that clause in his contract. It was only a matter of time before someone gave him a shot.

Maybe, I'm not convinced of that since things started to go south for the organization. I think he would come off as less attractive given the last couple years. Are you sure it was 3-4? Regardless I am certainly curious to see where he lands now that his relationship with Belichick is toxic.

If Bob Kraft was that desperate to lock Mayo up it's crazy to move on from him after one season. That's why the Krafts to me are biggest problem. I'm not sure they know what they're doing.

I don't know what that means, save to say it is an "offense first" playbook.

As a near novice, I would only add that other teams will eventually catch on, and catch up.

Still prefer defense first, three yards & a cloud of dust. Let Rodney Harrison do his thing under the pile.

But that's me.

I appreciate offensive teams in any sport.

Ultimately, I do not trust them.

What of young Milton?

Impressive to the uneducated eye 👁️ .

Phil Perry said he talked to people who know Ben Johnson and say he’s brilliant but more introvert than extrovert

That may work in Arizona but this area could be tough on a guy with a young family

Vrabel is like having OReilly coach the Bruins. He’s intelligent but a legend here and tough and charismatic

On the face of it you couldn’t draw up a better coach for Boston

The media will not intimidate him just the opposite

AVP really did a great job - watching local and national shows, listening to players he is getting rave reviews. Buffalo was surprised at Milton accuracy and decisions even against their B team.

He clearly took two kids and cleaned them up and developed them

I'm surprised Jonathan Kraft or his father didn't make abundantly clear to Mayo that the game should be thrown, gently and elegantly.
If that ever happened or got out of hand…

A. They played Joe Milton basically entire game - he was expected to make 2-3 turnovers not look like a seasoned veteran

B. They played all sorts of practice squad players in the secondary

Who were those guys ?

C. Their FG was more concerned about himself and family and was money / how dare him

Both teams didn’t want to win but respected the game

That’s what you want

I looked it up. He interviewed with Philadelphia and Denver for sure. I believe (...but couldn't verify) that he also interviewed with Las Vegas, as well. He turned down the chance to interview with Carolina once the Krafts offered him the Head Coach in Waiting clause.

Oh sorry, my statement means that Detroit is very much a physical run oriented team and you shouldn't be worried that Johnson is a pass happy coordinator.

Excellent. Thank you.

All of this is way above my head as a casual observer of the NFL, but intuitively, for me it would be between Vrabel and Johnson.

Other candidates, listed by boston.com's Conor Ryan,

appear to have questions at best, warts at worst.

What is the informal thread consensus about HC hopefuls, if there is one?

I wanted Vrabel a year ago. Probably biased, though, as he was probably among my top 15 favorite Pats players of all time.

Frankly i'm surprised Johnson is interested in the Patriots, he has been very picky about what scenarios and teams he would join.

Last year he walked away from the Commanders after concerns about that franchises stability and new direction and turned down offers to interview elsewhere before deciding to stay with Detroit.

It would send a pretty strong signal about New England if he does decide to interview with them.

Krafts' appear to not be messing around here and want to move quick one way or another, they obviously don't want to risk losing their guy.

Vrabel? Johnson?

Vrabel? Johnson?

They may wish to move quickly, but they better get it right this time.

Again, it is inexplicable to me that the Krafts did not instruct Mayo to lose the game.

It has been suggested, by Chad Finn I believe, that the "win" may have been an act of defiance on the part of the head coach, who must have known he was on the way out.

A middle finger salute and shiv in the back, as it were.

Has there been further reporting on this?
