No doubt player safety will review both the original hit and Xhekaj
Xhekaj got 27 minutes worth of penalties. There won't be any subsequent punishment. Pare's punishment is yet to be determined

I didn't think he would by that same measure Reaves has zero fear of Xhekaj.
Maybe you wouldn't, but your fellows Leafs fan suggested Xhekaj wouldn't be so brave with Reaves there.. That's clearly not the case. Reaves is about as big a deterrent at this pointvas Brazhear was when he was with Montreal. Which is to say, not very

Wasn’t a dirty hit at all.

Laine was skating full speed towards a player and he couldn’t skate around him.

I don’t know what Laine was doing.

Did he think he just skate through people?

Laine put himself in a horrible situation and got himself injured.

Xhekaj Should get fined and suspended for multiple games.

The guy wasn't even moving Laine skated right into him

Seriously

I feel bad for Laine but this odds 100% his fault

Xhekaj is a tough customer.

Not much choice, he was being boxed in by two Leaf players.

While I don't think it was an intentional knee, it was a poor move (and not just because of the outcome). Dude really wasn't using his brain well on that play at all. A pro player should know better and have better positioning.

Seriously Laine should not put himself in dangerous situations by skating full speed ahead towards a player and putting the puck between his legs and try to skate through him.

At some point when a guy is constantly injured, it's just not about bad luck anymore. This injury doesn't sadly surprise me at all. What the heck do you expect when you try to go over the blueline through two AHL guys with your legs way spread out wide like that??

It’s like those crazy videos of bad drivers who drive straight into pillars

I first saw the photo of the injury and thought it looked dirty as hell.
Then I saw the video and thought what the hell was Laine thinking?

hockey would be a fun sport if you never move and just stick your knee out whenever someone's trying to get by you

Maybe Laine shouldn’t skate full speed towards a player and not make any effort to skate around a player.

It’s like he went full McDavid but forgot you also need to skate around a player

Somehow I think if that was Marner not Laine and the scrub was on Montreal you wouldn't be quite as forgiving.
ha!
Bullshit start to a game , turned it to Flyers Bruins.
I see the loafs scored on the 7 minute powerplay they got for dressing a wimp scrub.

Marner knows how to avoid getting hit and has far greater skating ability than Laine.

He was likely thinking that he's gonna drive the puck in and follow it and then BAM a knee that had full body weight on it collided with his.

I don't think there was any intent. It's just incredibly unfortunate. It's hockey. As hard it is right now as a huge Laine fan, blame game is for losers.

It wasn't intent to injure, it was just an AHL scrub who got caught flat footed by a better player and instinctually stuck his leg out hoping for a little bit of contact. Pare is still trying to compete for his career and didn't want to get beat clean, Laine wasn't expecting that in pre-season

Really unfortunate outcome and I feel for Laine. Don't think this was intended or anything. Laine has a really weird skating base that is super wide with long extensions. He tried to cut through 2 people and when he made the cut the defender adjusted their body and with laine's knee still dragging behind it got clipped.

Jackeye should and will be 100% suspended. I get you want to stand up for your teammates but you can't just willingly assault a guy.

Pare stuck his knee out to try to get a piece of him. Clear as day in the replay. Do I think it was to intentionally catch Laine's knee? No I do not. That type of hit is thankfully a rare occurrence in the NHL as most players have some respect for each other.

But that's what he did as an AHL nobody on a guy with a multi million dollar contract. He's gotta know the opponent's biggest ugliest mfer would be after him. Not a lot of sympathy for him in this situation, you have to understand the context of hockey no matter what level. Wifi will get a couple game suspension and it will be well earned but he was doing his job. If the Habs were a unified locker room someone should have gone after Pare immediately, and if NHL refs were competent the Leaf would have been thrown out of the game.

Is there some longstanding NHL rule I don't know about where these two teams only get to play each other or Ottawa in the preseason? With so many minor leaguers involved trying to get noticed it seems like a recipe for an eventual bloody game.

Well Habs didn't really pay anything for him but hopefully we didn't just watch the end of his career. Would have been exciting to see if he could turn it around this season but that's probably the end of that. Another Habs top 10 pick almost without a doubt now.

Blaming Laine for the AHL scrub clearly sticking out his knee is some next tier homerism.
I hate the leafs more than anything in Hockey.

That being said, it's a dumb play by Laine. The screen shots are misleading as Laine was the one skating into him.

Very clearly not a penalty.

WiFi is an idiot and should be suspended.

I think teams mostly just try and limit travel in pre season. Leafs have played home and homes against Ottawa and Montreal and have one with Detroit as well.

and what bertuizzi did was on the worst cheap shots in the NHL history, he got off lucky, but reputation was ruined. Guy is a loser.

Wifi going after Pare is justified, pare just took it as well. Didn't even try to defend himself or his "actions" That is not something you want to see from someone trying to make the NHL.
Bullshit.

Moore's head shot on Nasland was orders of magnitude worse than Pare's play. Wasn't even a penalty and shouldn't have been.

If going after Pare was justified then so was Bertuzzi going after Moore. Of course that's idiotic and neither were "Justified".

The only difference between WiFi and Bertuzzi is that one was successfull in their chickenshit attack on another player.

I love fighting, hitting and physicality but punching a defenseless guy in the back of the head is just cold blooded assault.

That's like 5 to 7 weeks in a best-case scenario, worst case is pretty much the whole regular season. He seemed so excited to play hockey again and then this happens.

NGL that made me laugh.

“Class” gets so overused on here. If people want class, go watch the opera.

And knowing the type of guy Pare is, he’s probably having a big laugh reading the comments and sharing it with his friends.

The only thing that concerns me is opening night now, because Montreal is definitely going to goon it up.
The Habs are soft as shit, they can't goon it up. About the only team in the NHL softer than the Leafs.

Sucks for the habs. At the same time, anyone that actually expected them to have a good season was completely delusional

Frigen stinks for Laine. Catches a lotta flack, but I really wanted to see this guy turn it around - even on the habs.

The jawing on the dudes insta is wild; but I also get the frustration from the fans.

I like the Habs but getting Laine was not good. He's not a smart player.
He just deeps and doodling past the blue line and the Dman is covering his ice, not trying to Trouba him.
It's preseason, dump the puck in and work the system. Instead of trying to go solo with 4 Leafs ahead of you.
