Value of: Patrick Kane to the Sabres at the trade deadline

I agree with you that he’s not the answer. That was the majority of my response. I’m just saying that they shouldn’t avoid bringing in experienced players. If there was a good, older defenseman similar, I would certainly consider it.
I would argue bringing in experienced players to help the kids grow is much needed but the cost to get Kane wouldnt be worth it. not yet atleast, signing him as a FA if he was interested in joining Buffalo would be so much smarter

Next season Buffalo could totally use Kane. I don’t see them trade deadline bidding. They can bid when it matters in free agency.

If Kane waives it’s for a contender.

If Kane wants a return to Buffalo with mutual interest then trade deadline makes less sense as why cost a team you’d be willing to sign long term with substantial assets when they might not even be playoff bound.

My advice "Buffalo you looking fine girl! Stay young!" and be choosy don't settle for less than you deserve!

The way Buffalo is coming together, if managed correctly they could become a juggernaut in the league. Unless Kane really wants to play in Buffalo and is willing to sign a cap friendly contract at discount I would tell Buffalo to go for a younger player like Domi?

and holy crap how does Buffalo have so much Cap space!!!!??????!!!!???????

on top of

5 UFA''s 2023 Okoposo (6 mil) , Girgensons (2 mil), Hinostroza (1.7m), Pilot (750k), Anderson (1.5)

5 RFA's 2023 Jost (2mil), Cousins (1mil), Asplund (1 mil), Fitzgerald (750k), Bjork (475k)

Buffalo the Window is open start buying!!!

am I not understanding something right here? Why all of the cap space?

Why all the cap space?

Talking about specifically this year -- we've chosen to run a mega-young lineup that's on a TON of bridge and ELCs.

Talking about moving forward -- we've got some BIG extensions upcoming. First and foremost is Dahlin. He's likely in like for around $10M a season. We've already extended Tage. Cozens needs a deal, and pretty much everyone is hoping we give him the Tage deal. Power will need an extension too....and again the hope is that he'll sign a long-term one. Then there's Quinn and Peterka in 3 years.

If Buffalo is going to jump in the UFA market, it'll be in goal, in 3rd pairing physical defensemen and in bottom 6 forwards.

We'll have some space next year.....but then it'll start drying up fast if everything goes well.

long term planning.

Domi doesn’t fit.

in summer 2024 buffalo has Dahlin, Power, and Jokiharju as RFAs. Dahlin is likely $10M neighborhood
Power likely gets a 2-3 year bridge
Jokiharju is due a 3rd contract so $4M+
increase in salary from now looks like $10M

this summer you have Cozens ending his RFA. Does he get a bridge or does he get 7-8 yr higher contract at $7M

that $10M and increase on Cozens adds up. So in 24 this team wont have the space you think

Skinners cap space when it ends likely goes to young wingers they have recently drafted

without being certain on cap situation going forward they don’t have tons of money to spend.

other RFAs coming up possibly
25 Peterka, Quinn
26 Rosen, Kulich, Savoie
also in these summers with their young goalies of UPL and if they sign Portillo and Levi you likeky see higher salaries on the 2 goalies than you see now on the roster.

in 21 and 23 draft they picked a bunch of forwards in the top 100–10 in all. 4 in 1st and 2 in the 2nd.

any UFA contract they do sign will likely be shorter like 3-4 yrs or less.

roght now their top 9 are

Skinner-Thompson-Tuch
Quinn-Cozens-Peterka
Mittlestadt-Krebs-Olofsson

Tuch when his contract ends likely resigns
Skinner retires
Olofsson is probably traded between this TDL and next season TDL
Mittlestadt probably us traded..I think his UFA year is 26.

the bigger need is in D.

Ryan Johnson is in his final college year. If he finishes it he isn’t a FA until august 16. If he does not sign buffalo gets a comp pick at 31 of the 2nd round in 2024.

after him thry romp t have much in the prospect pool. They have used some mid round picks on D.

thry are more likely looking to acquire D and possibly trade prospect pool for similar age D

Yeah i'm sure Kane wants to go to a team that has a 0% chance of making the playoffs, Patrick Kane will go to a legit cup contender. And that sure as hell isn't Buffalo.
Unless someone knows Kane, who knows what he wants?

Kane has 3 cups, and maybe he just likes a particular city?

Maybe he wants a 4th cup?

Kane has an NMC and if he's hard driven to be somewhere specific, he has the option to say yay or nay.

I'm not advocating any team over another, just that Kane's reasoning may not be the same as another player.

Kane to Buffalo this season simply isn't happening. There is no reason to trade any 1st rounders or top prospects when we aren't making the playoffs this season.

Kane to Buffalo as a free agent probably isn't happening. It will take Kane wanting to play in Buffalo and maybe be a part of bringing a Cup to Buffalo, and the Pegulas wanting it to happen for reasons.

I’m sure Kane is dying to go from the 31st best team to the 24th.

This thread should be closed until the Sabres are a playoff team.

All true. And Kane controls everything with that NMC. Chicago's only option is to do nothing -- a real option if Kane dictated a deal that say only landed a 2nd pick worth little. But if he says he goes to Buffalo and the Sabres only have to give say Vegas 2nd, rights to Johnson/Portillo and maybe a B prospect like Kisakov what exactly can Chicago do? Nada. Same is true for any team. Don't put full NMC in contracts.

Almost like there are local ties to Buffalo or something.........

And pretty much all of his previous comments have been along the lines of he's proud to be from Buffalo, Buffalo's a great place......and then is completely lukewarm to the idea of actually playing there.

As much as Sabres fans dream of the hometown successful kid coming home, I don't see it happening. Especially now that we've got our long-term top 6 forwards identified.

I've followed the Blackhawks for a long time. They've been my west coast team since Roenick... Call me crazy, but I think Kane's going to stick it out in Chicago for his whole career, while Toews is the one who leaves after this year.

Can't explain it, it's just a feeling I have.

Buffalo and Kane, not a fit. Never was.

Sabres are looking but she (Kane) is not looking back.

The benefit for landing Kane now ahead of UFA is to see the fit with the lineup and where he could play with the Sabres before even considering a long term contract. There is also 50 + games left this season so anyone saying the Sabres are not a playoff team are completely clueless,

Kane helps the Sabres without question. He helps anyone, but he doesn't help with D depth, and he doesn't do anything for goaltending. We could ship Oloffson back and be better — not to mention sell more tickets — but the issue is he doesn't change a ton on ice for the team. I suppose if he anchors the third line with Mittelstaedt and Oloffson, we get a lot more dangerous, and we can win more 6-4 and 6-5 games. It would be fun, that's for sure.

Here's how I see it. If Kane wanted to be a Sabre, he'd of been one by now. He wouldn't have waited until he's in the twilight of his career and the Blackhawks starting stinking and going into a rebuild. All this talk about Buffalo being a top contender for landing Kane is hogwash. Kanes going to go where he'll get paid the most and that probably won't be Buffalo.

Sabres are not a playoff team. They would need to add more than Kane to make the playoffs. Would need a Hellebuyck level add to make playoffs. This doesn't mean they aren't a good team, and I'm very confident they will make the playoffs next season.

Yeah. This thread has been made at least once per season since Kane entered the league, it feels like. Never, at any point in time, has there been a fit there, or even anything close to it.
It seemed so I'm 2012. But I've never got why this topic has been a thing for 7 years. Kane has firmly talked about living now in Chicago and has a child now.

Thank You, I'am cautiously excited if I'm a Sabers fan right now. They seem primed for greatness

After last night Buffalo is, according to NHL.COM 8th in the Atlantic why would they part with assets to get him and why would he agree to go?
