Value of: Patrick Kane to the Sabres at the trade deadline

After last night Buffalo is, according to NHL.COM 8th in the Atlantic why would they part with assets to get him and why would he agree to go?
That's really the short of it. Adams knows Buffalo isn't making the playoffs this season, and the goal was to continue to develop their young players. Kane isn't going to help with that, if anything he would take ice time away from a kid like Quinn or Peterka. He's also not going to help them defensively or teach the kids how to play a 200 foot game at the NHL level because he doesn't really do that himself anymore.

With how the kids are playing there just doesn't seem to be a real need for more scoring. A top 10 pick in 2023 can either be used to draft another player or to trade for a young player that fits their core and can help them in areas of actual need.

I haven't watched a single Sabres game this year but why would a team in their position make a costly deadline buyer's move?

BUF is not the right team for Kane to got to. Still a great player, but he needs to go to a mature, accomplished team with an established leadership group. A team like CO, TBL, BOS, PIT(oooh), WAS.

BUF is still starting out. Getting a guy like Kane would be premature, and possibly detrimental. I could see his presence putting a damper on the young guys development.

Playing wise he can be detrimental to young players because they look to give him the puck way to much. They become much more passive. But it works both ways because lots of the time he has the puck good things happen even with tough passes.

not true…

ignoring a trade and just looking at the off-season. Based on buffalo contracts fir next season

skinner-Thompson-Kane/Tuch
Peterka-Cozens-Quinn
Olofsson-Mittlestadt-Tuch/Kane
Asplund-Krebs-xxx
Jost

they coukd trade Olofsson and/ or Mittlestadt and promote their youth ( Zrosemn, Kulich, others)

They'd get outbid pretty easily by a contending team that actually needs him.

If you read the off-beat premise of the OP from back in September, it was some convoluted idea that Kane would only take a deal to Buffalo for some reason. It was not grounded in reality then and isn't now any more likely.

What would Pittsburgh even have to trade? You got to think their cupboards are pretty bare.

A few years ago did the Sabres not add a bunch of people at the deadline when they were nowhere near the playoffs?
They're building something special there, not sure why they just don't wait till he's a FA if he makes it there.
