Sucks that things ended the way they did and Bergeron didn’t get the John Elway ending.

Few in sports do.

Just thinking about guys in this market in recent memory.

Pierce and Garnett win the one title but lose in 2010, then get shipped to Brooklyn in 2013 basically to fade away.

Brady and the Patriots are unique because they essentially had 3 main windows of contention during their 20 year run and cashed in for multiple championships in 2 of the 3 windows. Even at the end when things started to fall apart, they still make the playoffs although it ends with the pick six against the Titans.

He goes and wins the one title in Tampa. Last season was ugly.

Ortiz wins three titles and is still a really effective player at the end of his career. 38 home runs and a .315 batting average his final season.

Bergeron’s stats aren’t eye popping. His game was never flashy. Career high was 79 points. Never put up the monster numbers that Ortiz and Brady (a bit later in his career) did. His legacy is cemented, but a 2nd Cup would have really put him over the top in terms of all timers. Still, it’s a team game. Bourque had to go to Colorado for his Cup. I don’t think anyone’s blaming him for the Bruins not winning one during their window of 88-92.

If you’re doing Mount Rushmore of the last 20 years in Boston sports, Brady is clearly #1. From there, it’s probably Ortiz 2, Bergeron 3, Pierce 4?

Difficult because Ortiz is a one trick pony and Bergeron is a jack of all trades who never put up the gawdy numbers.

Think about this.....

The day David Ortiz hit his first ever post-season home run as a member of the Red Sox against the Yankees in Game 1 of the ALCS, Patrice Bergeron was making his NHL debut as a member of the Boston Bruins.

October 8, 2003.

Pretty crazy considering Ortiz has been retired now nearly 7 years.

He won't be the last, but he's pretty close to the last NHL player who played in the pre-lockout "old NHL". Burns and Fleury are the only two left who have contracts for next year.

Played against Mark Messier, Mario Lemieux, and Steve Yzerman.

I feel old now.

Honestly just sad. Selfishly, like many, I wish it wasn’t the end.

As an almost 30 year old man, some of my first Bruins memories are of a young Bergy. This hits hard.

Thank you Bergy for so many wonderful memories. And best wishes to you and your family. So glad you were a Bruin for your entire career. You played the game the right way and the way you embraced us fans was nothing short of a class act.

I look forward to seeing 37 in the rafters.

You will some day talk about him like we old folks here talk about Bobby Orr.
Im just fortunate to have seen both.

Definitely.

Played and important role and redefined himself towards the end of his career.

Payton Manning went out a champion as well, although he was cooked physically by that point.

Bergeron on the other hand goes out a very effective player albeit on a team that underachieved in the playoffs after a monster regular season.

He and I are the same age. I play goalie in a Sunday night beer league and wake up Monday morning feeling like I got hit by a truck.

Can’t imagine what it feels like to endure the punishment of playing in the NHL in one’s late 30s.

I think I'm going to pass on watching the presser. I've had tears welling up in my eyes just reading tweets from around the league about him, no way I can hold it together during a live press conference.

I guess the sadness is from the recognition that this is truly the end of an era. Patrice came to Boston during the same time period as David Ortiz & Tom Brady. All 3 won championships here. All 3 epitomized the teams they played for. Now all 3 have ridden off into the sunset so to speak.

Pass the Kleenex, I'm about to lose it again

He's scum. The lowest of the low.

Eagleson sucks, too.

I will not be watching, either.

Happy trails Patrice. Thanks for all the great memories. Such a great career. Happy that in the end it was not defined by that Jones hit in 2007. For many years after that we all flinched at any semblance of re-injury. I did at least. But your legacy transcends all of that. 1000+ points, 400+ goals, 6 Selkes and a Cup for an all-time Bruin. Salut.

Probably a dumb question but how soon can a first ballot hall of famer be inducted? I would imagine Chara is first ballot too but if I remember right they wait a few years after the player retires before inducting them.

I think Bergy will be eligible in 2026.

No idea who else will be eligible at that time though.

I believe it is 3 years. I do know they waived the waiting period for Bobby Orr.
Thanks, I kinda figured it was around 3 years. Chara should be eligible in 2025. Both Bergeron and Chara deserve statues outside the Garden for what they did for hockey in New England in the last 20 years.
