Well that f***ing sucks. Feel so bad for him, he was poised to fit in perfectly with Aho IMO. An interesting silver lining obviously is replacing his cap hit with another roster upgrade then still bringing Patches back for the playoffs. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

While I don't mind pulling our own L"TBL"IR move, we're kinda f***ed unless we can get someone to replace the gaping Nino/Tro/Patches sized hole in our top-6 now for fairly cheap. I wouldn't count on Kase, Necas, or Dzingelberry to be more than 3rd liners right now.

On the bright side, he lasted longer than Marleau, but less than Wiz
Well Nino hasn't been in our top 6 for a few years, that hole is on Staal's 3rd line, and potentially replaced by Kase, Drury, etc.

Tro is directly replaced by Kotkaniemi, certainly a question mark but that's independent of the Patches injury and would be a question mark even if this injury didn't happen.

We didn't have Patches before so we're not really any worse in the top 6 on the wing than we have been. Necas has pretty much been a staple in the top 6 the last 2 years and even when he was struggling down the stretch and demoted we didn't exactly have a much better player stepping up in his place. Who even was it -- Martinook? Domi? Nino was never taken off Staal's wing, nor was Fast. Koko tried wing earlier in the year, failed spectacularly and from then on never left the middle.

Nino is a minor loss, solid player who I loved having here but not an impact player and he's a guy who can be replaced. The injury is a concern because Patches was a clear scoring upgrade on the wing in the top 6 that would help mitigate the JK question mark at center and could help take us over the edge compared to the last few years but it's not season altering or anything to me.

It's also interesting that, if this were to happen, it's happening at maybe the best possible time for the Canes. It's still August 9th, with plenty of time to make deals, and even on a six month recovery time, Patches is available on February 9th.

The way this team operates, you can bet that they will 100% take advantage of the LTIR pool. If he's out half the season, that's, what, $3.5m in additional cap space they wouldn't otherwise have?

You had it right initially. The Kane/Kucherov is the only scenario in which the team benefits in a meaningful way in 22-23*.

In season, they'll need to keep that cap space available to activate him. LTIR only allows a team to replace a player; no double dipping in regards to cap space accrual.

*This opens the door to keep Gardiner and then trade him closer to the deadline at a lower cost. That will obviously help in 23-24 relative to a buyout.

Our Twitter account showed him skating in Canes gear a few days ago, so I'd wager it was recent.
I'd wager it wasn't a full tear and that it was preexisting this move almost feels coordinated by the Canes.... To bring back a goal scorer for the playoffs, even when we got patches we were making plays for Thatchuk, Kane is available...If we can swing a Kane or similar move we will be the ones called cap curcumventors this season.

I'll believe this when our insider posts it on Twitter

@spockBokk's Rodrigues idea sounds about right. There's enough talent on the roster to withstand this. An additional body is needed for depth. I think passing on the Gardiner buyout is a real possibility. At the deadline, trade him as a salary dump separately or in a deal for a $4 mil to $8 mil player(s). Activate Pacioretty on top of that acquisition(s).

Dundon so cheap he thinks the cap should be $10,000,000. Or something like that.

I expect another move coming soon.

I agree, this seems likely. Waive Gardiner before the season to maximize cap space, then use $1M of Pacioretty on LTIR to bring Gardiner back up. Use another $1M on Drury.

Both can be sent back down if needed later, or ship out Gardiner with a low pick later in the season.

Do they sign another veteran? Interesting question because you could quickly get into cap trouble that way when Pacioretty is healthy.

The issue with not buying out Gardiner is, well you likely will have him playing games for you at some point, not good.

To me, they needed a stay at home LD prior to the Pacioretty injury. Now they need another forward as well. Buying out Gardiner now ensures he’s not playing games for you and gives them the space to sign replacements.

However, Pacioretty to IR now does allow them to “have” to buyout Gardiner. I just don’t like the risk of keeping his cap hit when they could so easily be rid of it now. I could see them now deciding to not buy him out, with the main reason being they get out of having $1.5m of dead cap next season.

Obviously bad, but cap wise, this might be great. Now they'll have Pacioretty for a couple million cap hit when it counts, instead of 7 million all season. Will be interesting to see the next move.

You still buyout Gardiner, which gives us a plus 925K in cap space. Use the 7 million of LTIR of Max to either sign Kessel to a 1 year contract, Kadri to a 2 to 3 year contract or trade for Kane or Tank. The Hawks would have to retain at least 3 million of Kane's salary, leaving the Canes with nothing for the trade deadline or, If we trade for Tank, we would still be in the same situation unless we can get St. Louis to Retain 2 million or in either case add a player on our roster to complete the trade i.e. Martinook, Bear etc.

I never really liked trading for a key player with only one year left to be honest, I found the patches trade to be kind of meh. So I’m not really upset, only wonder if Nino sticks around if we hadn’t made the trade for him.

It makes things complicated with him coming back late in the season. I say let Necas have a top six role back and just go with it. No one left this off season that’s obviously available that I would spend the money on. We should at the very least be a bubble playoff team without him.

Achilles tendon ruptures are hard to recover from.

There's no guarantee he's the same player after this especially at 33.

I hope he does recover...

But injuries in your 30s as a pro hockey player can derail even the most in shape guys
Exactly my thoughts, a devastating injury for a player at that age. Hopefully rehab goes well for him.

Have no choice but to make a move for a top 6 forward now. Without Pacioretty, the forward group is a huge downgrade from last season. As it stands, it’s Nino and Trocheck out, Kase in. Can’t expect to contend with that, especially with questions in the third paining on the back end.
