The thing I DONT like is giving up the #34 pick rather than the #55 pick.

I mean, the Devils are taking on $27M over three years, most people thought any trade of Subban would have to result in retained salary.

People talking about this not "costing much" underestimate the potential of a Brink, Rees, Lavoie, or Kaliyev. All of who are believed to be solid future players.

Put more succinctly, I was more a fan of the young, slow, rebuild, whereas what, the Devils are competitive in Year #3 of the 3 years of Subban, when he's pushing 34 at year-end?

Crap, now I'm torn between never wanting the summer to be over because the weather just finally started getting nice, and wanting the summer to fly by as fast as possible so we can start next season.

Hughes is cheap for 3 years.

Hall at 11m is only +5m from his current 6m salary and Greenes 5m is off the books after next season, with Zajacs 5.75m the following year. We have tons of cheap prospects in the pipeline to replace them.

Subban is expensive at 9m but he’s also only on the books for 3 years, which is the entire duration of Hughes ELC.

There will also likely be a significant cap increase with the new TV deal in a couple of years.

We are fine cap-wise, we could still add another impact player in UFA and be absolutely fine, we have no bad long term deals on our cap.

It's a great day for the Devils. Adding to Hughes a player the caliber of PK Subban is just insane. The Devils are certainly a playoff threat this season, and the chances of resigning Taylor Hall just went through the roof.
The team looks so much better now that we can slide people down into better spots. Subban is also just a class act and a great guy in general. Franchise is transformed in 24 hours tremendously.

Someone who is better and more informed with numbers and the salary cap break down if that 9 mil for three years adds anymore difficulty for a Hall extension and hopefully a Nico long term extension.

Hughes ELC will expire the same year Subban’s contract is up, correct?

You mean pushing 34 at contract's end.

He had a slow year with Josi taking over, plus injuries. If he plays like he did years prior - this is a steal. If he's only average - than this is a fair deal.

This keeps us competitive - plus if he continues to be good, we have a valuable asset we can trade again should that occur - but i don't think so.

PK brings some charisma here, will help the PP. This is a great thing. I know the early 2nd is closer to a late first.... but that's fine.

Plus - i think the other 2nd is next year?

I think this is a great trade all day.

Have to make a play for Hall and at some point, you had to utilize the cap we've had for years. We straight up had to move the needle. If we did nothing and Hall left, what then? We reset the clock another 5 years?

No way.

And now instead of the Devils getting Bobby Brink, he's going directly to one of the biggest rivals, the Flyers. Add that "cost" to the Subban trade too.

It may get tight in year two or three of Subban's deal depending on what Hall, Hischier, Bratt, and Butcher get.

But as I said in another thread, you have to just get top end players at C and D however you can. Figure out the rest later.
