Probably the saddest I've felt about this team since the last sweep in 2010. This group of players are really likeable and deserved better. Hard to watch them so beaten, battered, and bruised at the end. Papais spending his last moments of junior hockey in the box, because he was playing defence.
A lot of things went wrong, like whatever caused Chenard's fall off, and Goure's facial injury (heartbreaking for him because he looked like he was destined for a pro contract this summer), but the issues with the team run so much deeper and it was clear from January onward that things weren't going to get better.
The positives? Barlow (although robbed by injuries of 50) having maybe the most dominant goal scoring season in Attack history - certainly since Angelidis - and proving to be such a special player. Votary emerging as a legit #1, especially in the playoffs, means this team is set in net next year with another strong tandem. Taos Jordan going from late round pick walk-on to reliable minute eating defender in two seasons. The trio of underagers looking great down the stretch when given more minutes.
The negatives? Too many to dwell on right now. I don't expect Dale to be given the axe, but his loyalty to a coach that clearly lost the room and appeared outcoached and outmaneuvered all season is a big strike against him, and if the same guy is behind the bench in the fall, I'll certainly be in the GM out come training camp.
The team finished three points behind last year's squad in what was supposed to be a contending season, and got three fewer playoff games to show for it. A lot of players on the team either stagnated (Petrovsky comes to mind as a guy who struggled to take the next step, Chafe another), or outright regressed (Uens to the point of being traded). I can only point the finger at management and coaching on that one.
And it will take some shrewd moves to have me optimistic about next season. The Mem Cup host is in our conference so unlike 2011, there's no backdoor option even if this team had the balls to go all in. Dale needs to hit a homerun on the import pick, or at least find us another Petrovsky who can step in right away with room to grow. The team needs a strong defenceman, better (and certainly costlier) than what was given up for Sawyer.
Anyway, this post is getting way too long. Thanks for another fun season of chatting Attack hockey on here folks, and thank god the priority selection is around the corner! Hope springs eternal.
