I have a touch more confidence that Beck will become a NHL 2nd or 3rd line centerman, than Kidney or Mysak.

Beck said that he like to compare himself to Danault.

Kidney is pretty boom or bust, even if he's smart defensively but he needs to put on muscle and improve the skating. If he does, he has sky high potential because of his hands, vision and IQ.

But Beck has the safest projection of them all. Really good player with a well rounded toolkit.

Mysak should play the wing.

The only thing I don't like about Beck is that he doesn't seem interested in being a better offensive player. I didn't hear him mention offence once, despite that being the thing he needs to work on the most.

I don't think a player needs to come out and say that he would like to score more......it naturally goes without saying. Players like Owen Beck play the game the right way and the offence naturally comes as a result. He has all of the tools to be a significant offensive contributor and is easily the most under appreciated pick from this year's class on this board.

I think every GM in the league takes Beck over Hutson but this board has taken the opposite approach based solely on offensive stats and development camp eye candy.

Beck was a great pick and other teams may regret passing on him imo as I think he has close to top ten upside in this draft.

Mesar and Beck give us two players with tons of speed who don't sit back and wait for others to take charge. Slafkovsky is of a similar mindset but without the speed but his puck protection ability has a chance to be elite.

I would be interested to see how much higher the Habs brain trust had Beck, Mesar and Hutson rated.

He does have a similar profile as Anthony Cirelli. Quite similar stats in the OHL.

I agree with you, the other point people don't pay enough attention to when stat watching is opportunity. Put this kid on most OHL teams and his stats go way up. Being on a team with another top center pushes him into a secondary role, Give him 1st line time and line mates, and 1st PP usage and his stats would fly off the chart and would have made him closer to a top 10 pick instead. That he was taken higher than his teams' #1 should speak volumes about his potential in the eyes of the Habs.

Cirelli is an example of one possible outcome, as is a faster Bo Horvat. Maybe he carves out his own unique identity and 10 years from know fans are hoping their late 1st/2nd round pick is the next Owen Beck......maybe somewhere between Horvat and Point.

The offence didn't come as a result, though. I think it was likely a result of his playing style, trying to always be ''above'' the puck. I agree that he has some pro tools that scale well to the NHL (skating and shot), but he didn't demonstrate anything like a high level offensive game this year.

As for Owen's pick value, I think it's fair. I don't see him as being a steal or a blunder. More a bet on his tools.

I don't think that is a fair assessment of a player in his rookie season in the OHL.

The most important thing about Beck it's even if he play on his season 17 years old, that his rookie year and he play really good for a rookie season.

After acquiring Kirby Dach, Habs are in pretty good hands in C depth with Suzuki, Dach, Dvorak (maybe traded this off season), Evans, Beck, Kidney and Kapanen (underrated prospect).

If it is we'll find out pretty quick I think. Who knows, maybe Beck drops 100 points on my head this season. I'd love to see it.

He may have a big season but it is more about consistent progression. I expect him to be closer to Horvat's D+1 production where he ends up with about 20-30 more points than games played. If he explodes for a huge season then we likely have a major steal that may see him becoming a top of the lineup player. That is not the likely outcome as he obviously would have gone much higher but it is possible.

Ultimately Beck has a high floor and is an extremely strong pic at 33 especially because he actually has the potential to break out into a top 10 level prospect in this draft. Considering the failure rate at 33OA it is borderline criminal that he was still available.

Aho, Point hope you guys are right. I heard the Leafs liked him with their pick. Before they traded down
IMO they had Yurov as #1 target with their 1st and traded down when Minnesota picked him just 1 spot in their face. Then Dubas probably gambled that their 2nd target would still be there and lost his bet. But hey, they moved Mrazek's contract at least. :sarcasm:

Believe the conversations started when Ohgren was selected, not Yurov.

i see alot of Plekanec personally, just super smart In term of positioning and making all the little details a natural center do. Better shot than Pleky though and a little bit bigger.
