Keep em coming boys Keep em coming. This guy is special how did he not go much earlier like in the first round.
He was projected to go late 1st/early 2nd. There was a lots of kids like that since the draft was projected as a "middle-six" until the mid-3rd round. Mesar, Beck and Hutson could all have been taken by the Habs at 26 really.

The catch with him thought (and a lots of the OHL draftees) is that he was a rookie last year which mean he started slower than a normal draft year OHL player and he was used as a defensive center for most of it limiting his offensive opportunities and tus production. So he ended up with a label of "probably just a 3rd line center". He's currently cruising toward a 96 pts season. The kid has NHL 1st line upside.

I don't see why Beck would be ahead of Farrell at this point in time.

13 goals in 15 games is great, but Farrell has also been putting up great stats since being drafted.
In his d+1 year: 101 pts in 53 ushl games
In his d+2 year: 28 pts in 24 NCAA games, 3 g 6 pts in 4 Olympic games, 6 pts in 10 World Championship games

A bit of a slower start this year, but I expect him to have a huge season.

Beck I would say is definitely ahead of Farrell as of today based on his performance thus far.

Let’s not forget Farrell was drafted as an overager, so even though he’s been really impressive and the development curve is great, he is still a year older when comparing year over year this way.

Farrell was drafted in his first year of eligibility for the draft. It's just that his birthday is in November, and the cutoff date is in September. So he's on the older side of his draft year, as ain he was born in the 3rd month of eligibility, but he's of the age range of that draft class.

Farrell is a "late" but not an overager.

However, he stayed in the USHL for one year post-draft, and that is a weaker league than the OHL. His 101 point year was largely fueled on assists, and he had future 1st round picks Adam Fantilli and Matt Coronato to feed, both of whom are outproducing him in the NCAA.

Owen Beck is bigger, is a center and faceoff wizard, and has a better shot. He is also two years and three months younger than Sean Farrell.

I agree Beck is ahead of Farrell right now. He is playing like a first round pick with close to Suzuki-like numbers in his D+1. His progress has been meteoric. It would not shock me if he made the Habs at 19 straight out of the next training camp.

Yes, Beck has vaulted himself ahead of Farrell in the prospect rankings.

Owen Beck is a center, a better skater, has the 200 ft game Farrell has and has a similar offensive toolkit, though I do think Farrell is a much better playmaker.

They are both great and may actually form an insane 3rd line together. They'll just need someone with skill and beef on the other wing.

After his performance in this year's preseason, predicting Beck making the team next year out of training camp is not too fantastical. But unlikely. There is no pressing urgency to rush this very promising prospect.

The kid really has a heck of a wrister. That tool will translate really well , it's already pretty much a pro level shot. You give him some space and he can score on you in a hurry.
Well said. But the question is: can he create that time and space himself. The answer to that question will determine Beck's success at the next level.

That's what was most impressive about his hat trick. Every time he did a little something to improve the odds of his shot getting on net. It's something Mesar needs to work on, actually.

I read that Beck is a potential future 3rd line Center. Is his upside more than 3rd line?

After seeing him play elvated minutes in camp I said he may be the steal of the draft. And yes I get the rookie status effect. Imagine how different drafts would look like if the league upped the age requirement by one year.

I agree not to rush him, but next September he is already our third best center, it is probably not rushing him to fit him in.

This assumes Monahan will be traded. If we still have both Monahan and Dvorak, it is unlikely he is in our top 3, and we don't need him for Jake Evans' role.

From what I've seen this season there is. I'd much prefer Beck working with MSL than any of the Jabronies on the farm. The proviso being his strength and conditioning.

I would like to think his floor is a Guy Carbonneau. I know its way too early, but this guy has talent and he seems grounded and has a work ethic.

Yes. No doubt. But can he create the same time and space playing against larger, stronger and faster players he will competing against in the NHL? Its one thing to be able to succeed against OHL teenagers. Quite another to do the same playing against Pietrangelo, Theodore, Hedman, Letang, etc.

Perhaps. But let's see if he's even selected to Team Canada for the upcoming WJC. And if he is, how he fares against elite players of his own age before predicting that he makes the NHL at the age of 19.

I am not writing this to call anyone out. But I distinctly remember many posters being absolutely furious about this pick in the draft GDT. Again, I didn't take names as I thought it was a pretty funny reaction

I personally didn't know him either, but I am glad that the team made their homework on that one.
