Ovechkin Milestone Thread - Countdown to 894

I'm pointing out a fact, you calling it complaining is more indicative of your bias than anything else..

I don't think that it's a good team strategy to use any forward in the league for the PP for that much TOI plain and simple.

If only the Caps put out Lars Eller for 40 seconds, they’d so so much better.

Like he is the only option out there for the caps, get serious.

You consistently ignore that Ovechkin is the only player in the league that FORCES a PK defender to either shadow him and allow a 4-on-3, or allow the best PP slapper to run wild.

Yes you are right other teams completely let other top scorers stay open on the PP and never even think about checking them.:sarcasm:

You cannot apply the same logic and strategy of other elite players to Ovechkin (when talking the powerplay). It’s as simple as that.

Why not he isn't any more productive than other elite players on the PP.

It's clear that you don't apply the same logic but I forgot the goal of the caps is for Ovechkin to get the goals record right?

Having stood behind the glass and watched Ovie warm up and take a series of one-timers several times, I think Ovie can pick corners if he chooses., and sometimes he does. I've seen him one-timing pucks to the same corner several times in a row with absurd velocity, and from the top of the circle nearly to the wall - very far away. But I think you're right and he's not always picking corners. Sometimes he's just crushing the puck as hard as possible. Ovie - uniquely among all players - can crush the puck in ways that cause wild angles and unpredictable knuckling effects. This creates chaos for opposing goaltenders. Pucks slip through holes that don't seem to be there, or go to part of the goal that the goaltender thinks they have covered. It's a pretty common reaction where the goaltender is just frozen there wondering how an unscreened shot from distance got through.

It's a totally different thing when John Carlson shoots the puck. Carlson can bomb it, but he doesn't have the torque that Ovie does, and so the shots get through based on placement rather than deception.

He probably doesnt pick a spot because that would render him predictable. With the velocity of (especially his) shots in the NHL, goaltenders mostly "predict" rather than "react" to shots. Choosing a different spot everytime would make it quite difficult for a goalie in movement to decide what to do.

Should be noted Jagr left the NHL from age 36 to 38 and came back and played a hell of a lot games as 39 to 45 years old, which racked up alot of games, but not many goals understandably.

That does not take anything away from Ovie though, but brings some insight on why Jagr did not get further ahead in 480 more games played.

Certainly seems like he could do it. Even “just” 12 goals in his final 24 gives him the tie. That’s exactly what he had in his 24 games before the two goals he potted tonight.

Even a conservative slump of just 9 more goals this season would give him his 12th season of 45+ goals.

That'd also tie him with Gretzky for most 50 goals seasons. If not for Covid that records probably his this season.
