Had Mario played a full career, no doubt his GPG would have came down, but then again, I don't think many argue against Mario being a better goal scorer than Wayne.

Possibly, but he lost a lot of games during the time when he was athletically prime, and he played to an older age than Gretzky.

Okay, so then Emmitt Smith is better than Jim Brown Barry Sanders.

In fact, the person with the most _________ is better than the person with less __________

Don't you think there's a little more nuance?

No one is arguing that Wayne Gretzky had the most productive career of all time. When we talk about "best" though, I'd think most people look at it more in terms of "peak level."

Mario scored more goals per game than Gretzky. He's 2nd all time to him in assists. His peak level of dominance, in my opinion, is greater than Gretzky's peak. He was able to do everything Gretzky did, plus things Gretzky couldn't.

It's hard to figure any logic that would say "Mario is overrated," or that they aren't within a whisker of one another on anything other than career totals in statistics.

mentions smith and sanders but not payton

8g in 19 games won't cut it if he wants to break the record

8/19 = .421 gpg

2022 - 26 games
2023 thru 2027 - 328 games

(.421 gpg)*354 games = 149 goals

763 + 149 = 912 goals

As long as Covid stops stealing games, he could slump his way well past the record before his current contract is up.

Always loved Ovi for his goals but hes ALSO a HUGE hitter. Enjoy! :yo:

He's got an off chance on ending up as the all time leader in hits, in addition to being the all time leader in goals. I think at the very least he will retire in the top 3 all time in hits, which is pretty impressive when you compare his goal totals to the other all time hit leaders/ and his hits to the all time goal scoring leaders. Ovi is the statistical outlier in terms of being a goal scorer / hitter.

Oh yeah, and he'll be the #1 all time in shots as well. If he could get top 3 in points all time, he'll have an even more stacked statistical resume, bested only by Gretzky in terms of greatness.

I tried to watch as much as I could tonight. What does Ovechkin do exactly other than shoot the puck?

Some pretty nice playmaking, one thing that people forget about him is that the reason he can shoot so much is that he´s got really good vision. His hands are kind of deteriorating and his speed aswell but he still knows where to be and where others are. Also pretty hard to move him when he´s parked.

Mario, Jagr, Howe, and Orr hold more records than you may think.

I feel like his being on the ice, the other team has to make crucial ajustments. We've all seen the meme on facebook and elsewhere, of how can Oveckin still make Powerplay goals from the same spot for now 10 years and counting. Well it's simple, it's a 5 on 5 game, or a 5 on 4 occassionally.

When Alex positions himself in the zone where he knows he can score, the other team either tries to prevent him, giving opportunities to other Caps players or they let Ovi do his best and their goalie exposed on 1 on 1 with him.

Hits are a fake statistic. They are supposed to be awarded only when you actually separate the player you hit from the puck. They are not awarded that way at all. They are less reliable than tackles in the NFL.

The Capitals have one of the worst power plays in the league. I would suggest the clear denominator is how Ovechkin frequently plays the full two minutes and is a complete non-factor in terms of zone entries and puck recoveries, likely moving less than 25 m in the aforementioned two minutes.

He will score a lot of goals this year and his team may still not make the playoffs.
Washington has a 91.2 % chance to make the Playoffs, it would be pretty shocking if they missed.

The Capitals have had a dominant powerplay Ovevchkin's whole career, they go one year with a bad one and the "clear denominator" is it's Ovechkin's fault. Ok then.. your bias is showing.
