The Capitals lost to the Panthers in the first round last year in large part because Hathaway shanked an empty net goal that would have put the Caps up 3-1 in the series. He missed it and it was icing and Florida tied it up on the ensuing face off and then won in OT.

Empty net goals are important to team success and Ovi is really good at scoring them.
He scores them at 59:50 with two goal leads usually. Today it was at 4-2 score to make it 5-2. So it´s not like they are all that important in these cases.

While your first point isn’t correct you’re right that they’re not all important. Just like all goals scored with a goalie in the net are not important either. A goal scored to make it 4-1 when your team is down with 3 minutes left in the third is also not important but doesn’t count any less.

It’s interesting how he’s getting a lot more hate the closer he gets to 894. I guess it would be no different if say Sid was chasing 2,000 career points or something.

You’ll always have the haters regardless but interesting how it’s been increasing and I can only imagine this hate intensifying the closer he moves towards 894.

I doubting he will, the fall off from the first part of last season is immense.

I just hope the goal that passes Howe is vintage OV instead of sideshow Ol

He'll break it because he'll get all the EN goal attempts. No one else even tries for them for the Caps anymore.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong but it's what it is.

From me it's not so much hate, but just how obvious Washington is at making sure Ovi gets the Empty netters. It's stat padding 101.

I mean that is 4 EN goals in a row in 3 games. All Ovi! It's not rocket science what's happening.

Maybe so but wouldn’t that be the case with any other team as well? I get it though but he’s been getting ENGs for many seasons but as he gets closer the hate seems to increase with everyone he scores.

LOL at people talking trash at Ovi's EN goals as though Gretzky didn't have his fair share as well.

Maybe people should look at the other side of the coin and ask how many GWG Ovechkin also has in his career.

One of the greatest players of his generation and of all-time. Period.
I mean, Gretzky still holds the record for the most empty net goals(although it’s basically a tie now) so its weird how some ppl are throwing a fit. it’s not like ov has like 50 more than him. Lol

Where's the harm in that though? 4 game winning streak for the Caps, why not give him a couple of EN goals while they're at it? It reduces the pressure he's got to pass Howe.

Well a lot of people don't want him to break the record and see these goals as nothing more than a 37 year old who's fading pretty fast padding stats to break a record.

Like I said, I'm not saying it's right or wrong but it is what it is.

a few ppl whining on here doesn’t mean anything. Let them complain. It’s the minority. 99.9999% of the hockey world are cheering him on. 🥳

Never said there was harm in it, but if you aren't a fan of Ovi or the Caps then you answered why. You admitted they are stat padding him. Only Ovi and Caps fans like it lol

99.9%? I highly doubt that lol.

Fading pretty fast is what the same haters have been saying and banking on for 5-7 years now in hopes that he doesn’t break the record.

If he scores a hatty against Chicago you’ll have the same people saying it was against a bad team.

Par for the course.

I hope Ovi gets an empty net hat trick in a game where he scores #800, 801 and 802
and when he breaks gretzkys record I hope its on the road where a player scores on his own net but the goal is rewarded to ovi since he was the last capital to touch the puck

all this crying over EN goals.

when the net is empty any team will want to "stat pad" the scoreboard, every team does it.

his teammates KNOW he's that close to breaking the record so they're obviously passing him the puck when the net is empty, it's not rocket science. (tonight he shot it from his own zone that's impressive enough)

some of you are so easily offended it's pretty sad.

People losing their minds over ENGs are funny. I hope Ovechkin plays five extra season, is iced 6 minutes a night and does nothing but score ENGs while Washington gets last place every season just for people to lose their mind.

I will admit though, other than the 2 the other night, the last 2 EN goals weren't exactly gimmies.

Offended? It's sports, not offended, just comical.

He is fading, I think that's obvious. He'll have enough juice left to break record but I do laugh at those that say he'll get 1,000. No way in hades lol.
