On March 14, 1986, Gretz scored a goal in the last minute of the third to make the score 11-3 against Detroit. Garbage goal for no reason but for some reason the idea of Ovi turning a 1 goal lead into a 2 goal lead is almost more disrespectful to the record for some here because there was an empty net.

Sometimes context matters.

Never said there was harm in it, but if you aren't a fan of Ovi or the Caps then you answered why. You admitted they are stat padding him. Only Ovi and Caps fans like it lol

99.9%? I highly doubt that lol.

I never denied it wasn't stat padding, but I don't see why anybody would get their panties in a bunch about this lol.

I think Brett Hull was and is the best goal scorer of all time. But OV will get the official title when he beats Gretzky.

Oates turned Hull into a goal per game machine

As soon as Oates was gone, boom Hull scores less and Neely is turned into a goal per game machine. It's simplistic, but it's a strong correlation.

Also, Mario Lemieux is the best scorer ever. He has the very best career goals per game, despite injuries, despite playing part of his career in the dead puck era and despite playing in old age. Nobody will touch his career goals per game. Not only Lemieux could score as much as Hull without an Oates or even a Jagr, he could also turn a Hull into a gpg machine.

OV will catch Gretzky if he plays every game of his current contract and scores at 26.7 goals per 82 games pace (needs 97 in 52+82+82+82)
Unbelievable.

Interesting that was written in August of 2011

Most Career Goals: 894

“Again, this figures to stand for a long time. The top goal-scorer among players 35 and under is Calgary's Jarome Iginla with 483; drop the age to 30 and it's Ilya Kovalchuk with 369. Alex Ovechkin, who turns 26 before the start of the season, has 301. Kovy or Ovi would need a long run of big seasons just to get close enough to consider Gretzky's record.”

Stop it. Lemeiux's prime was in the highest scoring period in NHL history from the 80s through 95-96 don't kid yourself.

"Only three other players have scored four straight empty netters: Jake Guentzel (4 in 2022-23), Vladislav Namestnikov (4 in 2021-21), and Gustav Nyquist (4 in 2019-20)."

at the end of the day even if Ovi rely's heavily on empty netters it won't equal out the production from the lost season and half from lockouts and the lost season from covid.

But still maintained those same rates in the dead puck era. You're the one kidding yourself.
no he didn't lol

he scored 35 on his awesome return season, but after that he only netted 28 goals.

The dead puck era didn't really start until 97, Mario played most of his top seasons in the 80s and early 90s. stop spreading misinformation.

I mean he was over a ppg player in that era in his late thirties after battling cancer. ThT 35 goal season was in 43 games would have been incredible to see what he could have done in that era completely healthy.

^^^Nobody tell this guy that Ovechkin's adjusted career GPG was higher than Lemieux's through hundreds more games played and despite playing hundreds more games during his 30s.

no doubt, Mario Lemieux is one of my favorite players behind Yzerman.

But the argument @Ozymandias is using revolves around goals, and saying he scored most of his goals in the dead puck era is just wrong and extremely misleading.

The dead puck era started earlier as it was a progressive downward trend of goals scored all throughout the 90's until it reached its peak in 97.

95-96 had a similar scoring rate to the present and Lemieux was goals per game. The 80's had much higher scoring rates than anything post 94 and despite all the scoring going down, was still goals per game.

You also mention 35 goals, ommiting it was in 43 games. Why? You know full well it's a much higher rate of goal scoring than the rest of the league, so you mention just 35 so it looks like you're making a point.

35 goals in 43 games, being beat-up, old, right smack in the dead puck era in 00-01. Only 3 50 goals scorers that year, all had weaker gpg than Lemieux.

Again, YOU claimed he scored most of his goals in the dead puck era, that's an outright LIE.

I have not said anything negative towards Lemieux, he's one of the best players ever.

Ovechkin is a product of his own era and his longevity has more to do with that than anything else. He didn't get beat-up like guys in the 80's and 90's were. Using simple stat adjustements doesn't account for the whole other array of factors that create such disparity between eras.

Your whole argument hinges on that longevity, but since Lemieux was beat-up by a tougher era, it would be more accurate to pinpoint similar instances in their career.

Example: Ovy was 36 last year, playing in a much more productive league than when Lemieux was the same age In 00-01. Guess who flat out beats the other in goals per game despite playing in a less productive league? Also, less we mention all the freebie empty netters thst just widens the gap.

I never said that. Put on your reading glasses.

I said he had the same rates in the dead puck era, going 69 in 70 in 95-96 and 35 in 43 in 00-01. Those are similar goal scoring rates as what he had in the 80's and early 90's.
