Embarrassing stuff there, Ovi standing completely parked in the D zone while the Flyers peppering shots just to preserve energy to get that 2nd empty net goal, but the Caps are really planning their line changes the last 3-4 minutes to make sure he gets the free empty netters. That is true dedication from the coaching staff and players!
I love the fact that this thread is going to be a splinter under your fingernail for the next few seasons. In addition, once he breaks the record it will only be worse for you and your ilk.

Capital franchise has always been about maximising Ovechkin's totals. A marketing tool.

Yep. Its just classless. Last time Ovechkin got 2 empty netters a Detroit player slashed him pretty badly because he was fed up with the horse****. The Flyers are too soft these days to bother...

Funny how nobody remembers that Detroit player.

#895 will surely be scored into an empty net. It has to be in order to illicit the appropriate responses.

It's already been written.

He iced the game twice, proving that the strategy to have him out there is effective.

It’s dedication to a winning strategy, I see nothing to complain about here, but of course you do

Will be interesting to see how Ovi’s career ends. He still can score goals, but is tied in points around 50th in the league. I mean, Crosby has more goals than him so far. He’s limping by, though not surprising given he’s like two year older than Crosby, right?

Funny reading this coming from an Oilers fan. A franchise with the two best players in the world, with all the scoring titles imaginable but very little team success to speak of.

The Caps and Ovi did OK, all things considered

Ovie set a new league record for empty net goals last season and he would be on pace to break it again this season if he had not hit the post multiple times. People just look at the goal totals anyway, as Caps fans rightly point out! So as long as he gets them it wont matter how.

I just wish all empty net goals and assists were eliminated from the stats for all players, it would give a more balanced view and not reward greedy cherry picking which is clearly completely pointless.

Always? This is simply not true. You are really stretching this. Although, had you said that the Caps are delaying the team rebuild while keeping the big record in mind, I would probably agree with you. But this rebuild should have started after the 19/20 season, not before when the Caps could still compete for the Cup.

The player slashed the net. That's basically the norm after conceding an EN. Break stick in frustration.

I don’t see an issue with empty net goals. An elite empty net goalscorer ensures a win. It also signifies that a team is more often than not in a position to win if a player can capitalize on the opportunities more than others.

The point is that not every player gets equal chances during their careers to get empty netters. If you play for Arizona for 20 years you will get significantly less chances at empty nets than if you play for a power house team for 20 years. And add the cherry picking on top of that, and you get stats that does is skewed.

Not at all considering how many posts and crossbars he's hit. He's still firing off the shots so his shooting percentage should climb closer to his norm.
He is second this season (not counting todays game) with 7 post/crossbar shots

8 SOGs today, 31 shots to catch Bourque for the first all-time (this record will be popular too)
