I'm really curious to know if Ovy will be motivated to keep going after breaking the record. Maybe he'll still be hungry to play and even try for the 1,000 mark. I think he's out there having fun.
I don't think so and I'm not sure there's a Caps fan on this board who expects him to play beyond the end of his contract next season. It's more questionable if he retires when he gets the record or if he finishes the contract.

I also think the team is so much better this season that he has to be drawing a lot of energy and positivity from that. Last season was a struggle not only for him but the entire team to score goals. They were slow and watching them was painful. It's alot easier to love what you do when it's going well.

If he is around 35g and 70p next season and if the team wins a round or two in PO in these two seasons, he can well sign another 1-2 year contract, because why not?

It's more questionable if he retires when he gets the record or if he finishes the contract.

I absolutely believe Ovechkin will play the full two years, all these words about retiring after scoring goal #895 are in jest. If he retires after getting the record this year, the team will still have the cap hit, and he will never screw the team over like that.

Just reading between the lines. This is how it plays out IMO.

We'll see. If Ovy's level of play is still high in 2026 he might stick around.

There is no way. Ovie is very settled in DC, he’s not going back to play in Russia at 40/41.

Oh I would bet my bottom dollar he'll go back to Russia. The question is when.

Suppose the Capitals ascend back to a contender this year and the next. At the same time, their current group of young players continues to improve and the Capitals add prospects like Leonard/Cristall/Miroshnichenko to the mix who further strengthen the team. With the pressures of achieving the goal record behind him and no longer looming over him game after game, I could see the appeal for Ovechkin to stick around for another year or two past his contract if he's in good health, having fun, and still producing at a high level to try to win another Cup with Washington.

Agreed. Would be legendary if he can be part of another cup for the Caps. Also love your avatar

He’s done after his contract is up and will finish his career off in the KHL.
The only problem with this statement is that it’s based on things ovi said back when the prevailing wisdom was that the Caps would be a bottom feeder this year and next year.

If Ovi maintains his current level of play and they make the playoffs both years (big if) and win a round (bigger if) then I could absolutely see him sticking around for another year after his contract is up. The probability of all three of those propositions coming to fruition is low, but if they do I don’t see him walking away from a legit playoff team.

His father is Vadim Tarasov who played goalie in Russia from 2002-2013, I wonder if Ovi ever scored on him?

Did Howe ever score on 2 different generations of goalies? Jagr?
He did

OV doesn’t have the typical athlete body. He more has the “I survive on meat, potatoes, and vodka” body.

Highly unlikely. He already stated multiple times in his Russian interviews that it’s becoming harder and harder for him to prepare for any new season

By the way, Ovi was a whopping +4 today as well. And only 13:35 of ice time. Adding good pieces to the team during the offseason has helped. But it’s time to give more praise to Carbery. He IS the best signing the Caps have had in a while.

Carbery is just fantastic - I love what they show from the locker room post game, he's got that aura. The team is WITH him, he's doing wonders with them not just on the ice, but by the look of it even outside. Super addition to thos team.

I’m not sure what will happen after his current contract runs out

I have a feeling he will have a blank check and ownership will hope he’s going to be fair with us if he wants to keep playing in the NHL.
