When I saw that WSH was up 3-0, I thought, "This means CLB will have to open it up, meaning a chance for Ovechkin to get a goal or goals." Surely enough, he scored one a bit later. I can see him potting one more, though WSH will likely let up now.

The only question now is whether he can hit 894 in less games than Gretzky.

Not counting today’s game, he needs 36 goals in fewer than 52 games - a 57 goal pace.

As of now, it’s looking like he most likely won’t make it, unless he has 1 last tear in him.

It's amazing he's that close in goals per game to Gretzky considering Gretzky had his prime in the 80s and early 90s and the League was much harder to score in during much of Ovechkin's prime.

Gretzky was obviously a better player, but I think Ovechkin is easily the better goal scorer of the two.

Once he gets the record to me he moves up to 5th best all time
Lol no way.

Mcdavid is untouchable for any previous era star

OV wont pass Mcdavid all time. OV is the GOAT goal scorer. He was at goal 800. Most rockets, longest goal scoring prime and one of best peak seasons.

Him getting 895 won't change his all time ranking from 8-13 range

He is,

Gretzky isnt a top 3 goal scorer all time. Not in order the 4 best are

Lemieux
Bobby Hull
Gordie Howe
OV

The 4 best and most talented goal scorers in league history.

Nah. Top 5.
Maybe a minority group may argue 5th when he is closer to 10th

But reality is Mcdavid has him beat for peak, prime, and soon career (2-3 more seasons).

88 pt per 82 player isnt the 5th best player ever.

OV is in second tier with Crosby, Jagr, Hasek, Bobby Hull, Bourque for non top 5 players all time (non generational players but all time legendary elite groups)

Only the top 5 of Big 4 + Mcdavid is generational player group

What are you talking about, prime Howe is not too far from that.
Low-scoring eras happen.

3-year peaks are closer than you would think. 2020/21 is Covid season, 2021/22 by McDavid is worse than any of 2007-10 seasons, and only 2022/23 pushes it over the finish line.

Nah. If McJesus doesn't get a cup or only one, he's going to need to do some crazy stuff to put him ahead of the most important category in hockey: scoring goals.

Caps retool is looking amazing right now. Its like the perfect storm of their additions working out well together with several of their younger guys looking legit this year. Theyre not even feeding Ovie trying to help him score, the teams just playing hockey.

I don't really expect Ovie, at 39, to maintain the pace necessary to break the record this year. But, frankly, he has made a career of breaking expectations.

The Caps final 2 games this year are in Pittsburgh and NY (Islanders). If I were fans of those teams and lived there, I'd be considering getting tickets for those games, just in case.

Wouldn't it be "something" if he hit or broke the record against the Pens, in Pittsburgh? Would be interesting to see whether he was applauded or booed.
I would travel from southern Ontario to Pittsburgh or NY just to see it live

Saying Ovi isn’t generational is absolute crazy talk. You must be a very young/new fan

McDavid without a cup will never be #5 all time

People need to accept it
Disagree.

I argued for years that one player can’t carry a team to a cup. Ovechkin couldn’t when he was the bonafide best player in the world. Crosby couldn’t carry a team to a cup. Gretzky couldn’t without the all star Oilers.

McDavid has been fantastic in the playoffs, not really much more you could ask of him.
