Disagree.

I argued for years that one player can’t carry a team to a cup. Ovechkin couldn’t when he was the bonafide best player in the world. Crosby couldn’t carry a team to a cup. Gretzky couldn’t without the all star Oilers.

McDavid has been fantastic in the playoffs, not really much more you could ask of him.
No one cares.

But McDavid is very productive. We will see with how many points he will end. It really hard to understand now because he can play until 40+ or just stop somewhere.
______

Still Ovechkin is absolutely generational. It really just the synonym of generational. Go to youtube and check how many views he has on his highlights and how many views have other players. Literally the whole generation of hockey players was growing on his example. The whole generation of hockey fans watched the competition between him and Crosby. Their competition was the big reason why hockey didnt lost a lot of attention. And its a big question who is more popular in the world. I would say its not even a question. McDavid in the same time isnt close as a figure. At least now.
And Ovechkins path to the best goal scorer of all time is making him generational just by the fact.

Someone can not agree with it - no one care. Everybody knows Ovechkin and everybody knows NHL because of Ovechkin now. He is literally the face of hockey generation. And his popularity is coming from his game, his results and his personality.

He's never been a defensive stalwart but the "one-dimensional" thing always struck me as salty.

While not an elite playmaker, he sees the ice well enough and has averaged about 40 assists per 82 games in his career. That's better than most middle-sixers, on top of being the greatest goal scorer of all time. At 39 he still moves the puck well around the offensive zone and makes some crafty passes.

Reading some of the offseason pearl-clutching posts, you'd think he has no business being in the league any longer and that the Caps are trotting him out to their own detriment.
Yep - and big surprise: none of the usual haters have been posting in here the last couple of weeks because they've got no ammunition.

Is this his first goal against this Tarasov guy?
He's scored 3 goals on 6 shots against Tarasov

It's amazing he's that close in goals per game to Gretzky considering Gretzky had his prime in the 80s and early 90s and the League was much harder to score in during much of Ovechkin's prime.

Gretzky was obviously a better player, but I think Ovechkin is easily the better goal scorer of the two.
Ovi is already the greatest goal scorer of all time , it's pretty obvious. Him breaking the record would just leave no arguments for the detractors

It was very obvious to anyone that spent a lot of time watching him that he had a back injury last season until the All star break that severely hampered his movement, but that didn't stop haters who never consistently watched him from pretending he was healthy and just over the hill old.

Caps retool is looking amazing right now. Its like the perfect storm of their additions working out well together with several of their younger guys looking legit this year. Theyre not even feeding Ovie trying to help him score, the teams just playing hockey.

PLD trade looking like the Jeff Carter to LA trade so far, trade a dysfunctional player (Jack Johnson/Darcy Kuemper) for the a higher profile longer contract dysfunctional player who seamlessly fits in and slots everyone else where they should be. Caps also won all of their games without having Matt Roy on the ice and haven't missed a beat since Chychrun went down as well. That's a top pairing for half the teams in the league

Lol no way.

McDavid is untouchable for any previous era star

OV wont pass Mcdavid all time. OV is the GOAT goal scorer. He was at goal 800. Most rockets, longest goal scoring prime and one of best peak seasons.

Him getting 895 won't change his all time ranking from 8-13 range
Not sure about that.
If McD does not win a cup, does not collect any more hardware
(he did not last year and does not look like this year either), remains relatively weak goals scorer (scored more than 44 only once) and loses speed (he is 28 in Jan).
And OV scores 900 with decent last two seasons.
All are in realm of possibility, McD is very much touchable :)
His trajectory was to #5 for sure before injury woes.

I knew (and said) before the season started that Ovechkin would have a bounce back season.

I’m sticking with my prediction that he’ll score between 40-45 goals and will likely break Gretzky’s record by the end of this season

I don’t want it to happen, but It’s just inevitable at this point
