Watch Ovi closely for an entire game. Then watch Crosby for an entire game. It's not even close. 11 out of 10 people will prefer Crosby.
While I agree, if I were building a team I’d still choose crosby over ovi, it is something special to watch the greatest of all time at one particular thing.

Ovi is that, the greatest goal scorer of all time. Crosby isn’t the greatest at anything, nor even top 5 at anything… and that’s coming from someone who considers crosby the best of his generatiom, AND mcdavid’s generation (yes, that’s me saying that crosby is a better player than mcdavid)

I was hoping he hit 45 goals this year when he started to slow down just a bit. Would be AWEsome if he actually hit 50 on the dot!
Gets him that much closer to the record as well. Caps are HOT right now.
50 goals this season would bring him to 780 career goals.

He would need to average 28.5 goals a season over the last 4 years of his contract to hit 894.

I think Ovi is aiming for 1000 when he signed that contract
If he finishes this year with 50 goals then he'd be at 780. Seasons of 45, 40, 35 and 35 would get him to 935. Gut it out for perhaps 3 years to get 65 goals? If he wants to do it, it's absolutely possible.

I think he retires from the NHL after his current contract, though.

You never know. Lots of statements about him wanting to finish up his career in Russia but if he's feeling good and still playing at a 35 goal level does he stay and go for it?

The real question now isn't if Ovechkin can break Gretzky's goal record, it's can he do it in less games than Gretzky. Ovechkin still has 229 games to play before he's played as many regular season games as Gretzky, so he would need to score 126 goals in his next 228 regular season games in order to break the record in less games than Gretzky. Oveckin has scored 142 goals in his last 228 regular season games, so even with a slight decline in production he might be able to do it.

I have to admit....I grew up a Gretzky fan so I am kinda hoping it goes like this ;) :

Congrats to Ovie on becoming the highest scoring LW of all time! A tremendous accomplishment. A very clutch goal for point #1395.

Also, his 390th career road goal. Just 13 more to become the highest road goal scorer of all time. 👍
Insane that he just broke this record and there’s no other buzz on this forum about it. It just goes to show how significant Ovechkins impact on the NHL record books are. It’s like an every week occurrence for him.

11 out of 10 people, but only in western Pennsylvania or Halifax  Crosby is the most overrated person in postlockout NHL. Everything good that happens with his team is automatically credited for him, but in all failsures, including his personal mistakes, fans and media gonna blame his teammates, coaches etc

Lol. I remember meeting some of those 11 people in 2006. I was living in South Korea then and I met some drunks from Nova Scotia. They insisted that Crosby was going to win Rookie of the Year and challenged me to a fight when I disagreed and said that Ovechkin was going to win it.

Where did you find hockey fans in Korea? Itaewon?

I can't remember where I met them exactly but it wasn't in Itaewon. I think it was in Eastern Seoul. Maybe Gangnam-guchang?

Not much interest from Koreans about hockey. Just the English teachers and especially from Canada. Jim Paek (former NHLer with the Pens) ran a hockey equipment store, though.
